How do you make a proper duo boss fight?

Make the bosses complimentary to each others move sets while not being so oppressive that they become unfun to fight.

bottom would've been better if they didn't reuse those bosses

bottom should've been the chief of the Beastmen in Ara Azula

>people still having problems with smough and ornstein after 17 years of souls

The crystilians were the best multi enemy boss fight in any souls/souls like game and fromsoft nerfed them into the ground to the point the fight is entirely ruined because shitters were crying.
>three enemies at once
>one that slowly chases you in to stab you that you can easily outrun
>one that has a very long wind up time for a spell to create a big AoE of damage that is very telegraphed and easy to avoid
>one that has a rythmic ranged attack you need to dodge every 3 seconds
The basic strategy is basically kite the melee one as you get out of the big AoE zone before it comes while dodging the ranged one, then running to the ranged one to hit it while the melee one is far away and AoE one is getting prepared to cast another AoE.
>>
foreskin duo was easy I never saw the issue
>>
>>748531179
this is the only fight where using summons should be perfectly justified since both bosses are MADE FOR 1V1S
>>
>>748533250
I disagree, demons of pain/hated in dark souls 3 and big small from dark souls 1 are peak
>>
>>748531179
literally who are the guys on the bottom? i fought them a couple of times, but i never even knew what was their issue with me
>>
>>748533763
basically o&s are being reincarnated into multiple universes and constantly doing the same power seeking bullshit at the cost of everything around them
>>
>>748533617
big small from ds1 is a shit boss mechanically. the only good thing about it is the theme and spectacle.

This is the interesting thing about discussing souls game bosses though. some people really only care about the spectacle and will say tht dogshit bosses like starscourge radahn are good because they like the trailer.
>>
>>748533326
people are retarded (they actually think dark souls is hard)
>>
>>748531179
You can't. The entire soulslike combat system immediately collapses once you face two equally fast and aggressive enemies. It just doesn't work.

Eh I get your point for starscourge radhan, it's hype as fuck but the hit boxes are really all over the place, you can play the same exact same way yet get destroyed by him or destroy him. I can see why it's objectively flawed mechanically.

That said while outdated I think they did pretty well for a duo fight with big small, the two boss complement each other very well without being oppressive like foreskin duo. For ds1 standard I think they did a good job but form software kept evolving and games more fleshed out mechanically down the line.

I think the demon princes from The Ringed City DLC was done almost perfectly.
They swap between aggressive and passive without being completely helpless. Sometimes they'll both be active for a short time, causing you to play more defensively.
It avoids the major issue I have with O&S. The fact that you're just running away not attacking for most of the fight, hoping for one of them to make a mistake and separate a bit so you can get an opening.

>O&S is a shit boss, mechanically, what makes a good duo boss is how many times in a row the caster makes you run a complete circle around the arena before you're allowed to hit any of them as with triple crystallians
Every time an elden ring fan opens their mouth to speak, what comes out is the most brainrotted shit ever

A good duo boss should actually be designed to work in tandem with each other, not just something as lame as one being slower or needing to bait them away from each other to avoid overlapping attacks.

Blade Bearer and Cannoneer are the gold standard imo. They have movesets that compliment and cover for each other's weaknesses, but there's plenty of openings and ways to weave around them even without just sprinting to the other side of the map. They're strong enough that you can't simply burst one down to ignore the gimmick, but not damage sponges so they still incentivize aggressive play. Because their movesets and resistances are so different you can't really bring a counter to both bosses without gimping your entire build either, but at the same time they're quite deadly so you will need to adjust your build somewhat to deal with it.

>>748531179
For those who beat the duo fight for the fist time without using sleeping arrows, I salute you.

Just don’t do whatever throne watcher and defender did in DS2 and you’re fine. That’s my benchmark for a bad duo fight, an actual brainless fight with almost nothing interesting done with the two at all, with the revive gimmick being pointless mechanically because it’s basically the “you win now” state even in CoC. They’re in the same game where Darklurker existed, which was good and the best duo until demon of hatred phase 1. Ruin Sentinels was also good though that’s a trio even though the first one exists just to introduce you to the enemy quickly before you potentially fight two at once. It’s ironic cause having two of the same exact enemy tends to make for bad duos but Darklurker and Ruin Sentinels made it work, like Elden Ring duos at least have the two use different weapons so you get some fun ones like the Crucible Knights. Godskin Duo isn’t really good because the fight kinda abandons the idea of the duo early on into it even if you’re not super optimized with your build. Like just kill one, then fight the other and kill it for the next one to auto revive and then when it tries summoning the other guy you get the biggest attack window ever. O&S and Demons also abandon the duo concept but it’s still around half the fight, if not more (though O&S first phase can be taken down in like 10 seconds with strong weapons and if O rushes towards you).
I liked Gnoster Faurtis and Animus in Nightreign, Everdark Gladius is fun while playing with others but solo it’s annoying. Harmonia makes a 7v1 work pretty well and it’s fun, the everdark version is basically another fight all together and the fused form sucks but the unfused part is great.

I accidentally skipped half the game before I got to the duo so I was severely underleveled and had no chance against them. When you're more current you'll have enough damage to kill or almost kill the last guy remaining while he's casting the resurrection spell. I could get maybe 20% of his health during this time.
With no way of fighting just one except using external items I was simply whittled down over time.

>>748531179
Have them just be one boss with two different bodies instead of two separate bosses that you hope work.

If they can attack at the same time or spend the whole fight hugging each other's asses then you fucked up, you made a bad boss, matey. That's every fucking duo/trio boss, that's all they do.
>>
>>748531179
I like ones where they are just made with linked animations, so technically not an actual duo fight, it's just one boss with two healthbars and a split model but it is always consistent and cuts down on jank.
>>
>>748531179
>ornstein and smough
>2 guys designed to be fighting alongside each other to cover each other's weaknessess
>they have separate health bars
>when one dies the other uses their power to become bigger and stronger
good
>godskin "duo"
>2 enemies that are fought separately in many different places across the game
>they have separate healthbars, but also technically share one as "godskin duo"
>when one dies another shortly spawns in, but "godskin duo" has more total health than a godskin noble and apostle combined so you end up having to kill at least 4 of them before "godskin duo" is defeated
utter shit and i still can't believe it stayed like that

Dual Bosses are bullshit in a game which is all about precise dodging and memorizing attack patterns.
You'll dodge one only to get fucked by the other with no way to respond because their attacks are out of sync.
And it's hard to keep an eye on both at the same time, especially if one ends up off-screen.

You're literally complaining about having to git gud.

>You'll dodge one only to get fucked by the other with no way to respond because their attacks are out of sync.
Then you make them sync.

>And it's hard to keep an eye on both at the same time, especially if one ends up off-screen.
Then you get both of them in front of you at all times. The issue is you not learning this.

Incredibly retarded and unfun, just like in MH.
