You did it backwards, retard. Immersion first, then supplemental materials to speed up your learning. While it's possible to learn without context, anything that you learn in the context of actual usage of the language will stick a whole lot better.

I'm not there yet, but grammar's a big one, any occasion to hear and read some japanese is one that should be taken (I even bought a book of traditional stories for language learnes, with the japanese and english text side by side)
i try to watch the random jp vids i get recommended by youtube, even if you just understand one sentence and a few words in all the others, it's something

For every kanji, corresponding vocabulary
For all vocabulary, example sentences
For all examples encountered, dialogues and scenes using them
Then even if you don't learn it all at once (you can't anyway), you'll have planted the seeds to learn from repeated encounters in games, animes, movies, whatever else.

Even better would be to also speak the language with natives or advanced students daily, like children do when learning their native language
>>
>>748558313
Isn't that basically what a deck like Kaishi is?
>Even better would be to also speak the language with natives or advanced students daily, like children do when learning their native language

>>
>>748558294
Yeah. You're gonna want grammar. Just grab any textbook and do it. If you're not trolling, knowing the high school kanji is a great place to be. Start learning words, do the first two books of any series then just start going and struggling through the real world.
That is, if you literally mean you couldn't understand anything. If you just mean reading was slow, then yes, just struggle through it.

>>748558080
It's less about never studying at all and more so about making sure you're applying what you learn. It's going to be better to study for 15 minutes a day and then spend another 45 immersing yourself with content in the language than it will be to spend 60 minutes a day just grinding out your study material. Obviously studying will help you along faster, but don't neglect actually using what you learn. You don't have to be an expert in a language to start enjoying content in said language.

You're still reading them a little bit
Remember when you started learning to read as a wee lad?
They'd make you go over the lines while the teacher or someone else read them, so you know what it said and you just couldn't read them
But then you see an advertisement sign or you turn over the book to the next page and realize you recognize some of the stuff without anyone needing to tell you what it says
and that's reading
>>
>>748559542
Hour a day. Teachers and other students just slow you down. It's just a structured curriculum. You can do it one on one with a teacher or alone.
But if you want grammar flash cards exclusively, go do Bunpro I guess.
>>

I found an old novelization of Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 and have been reading that. It's also slow.
It's kind of fun to start to see the weird "novel" words that you don't see in real life. For example, the knight didn't walk across the castle. He 跨いた. Motherfucker Strode.
I still read so slow though. Like, 5 minutes a page. Still, I feel proud that I can mostly do it now. Even if it's slow and I have to have a dictionary.

Eventually I gave up and went back to consuming most of my JP media in English. I do engage occasionally with untranslated content, but I simply don’t have enough hatred in my heart for the trannylizers to subject myself to reading works that have English translations in Japanese.
I’m the ultimate, clinically retarded dekinai.

There's not that many, and I do find it helps break down how they're constructed. You'll see the individual parts and such. Definitely helps if you're writing them. Though even with reading being able to identify the constituent parts makes it easier to read imo.
Probably isn't absolutely requires though. Though, I guess required for what is the question.

>>
>>748560064
There's not much of a point in learning them by heart. Yes, sometimes the radical helps with the meaning, but they feel random more often than not.

What actually does help is remembering the sound part, or whatever it's called. There are a lot of similar kanji that are read exacly the same, like 相、粗、祖。

in 3 to 5 years leaps I guess
I try to rationalize with how it is to learn any language; I thought I was basically fluent in english at 15 (and I guess I was, in terms of understanding and being understood), but I still made a lot of mistakes and my pronunciation wasn't really natural
Then looking back to myself at 20, I was a lot better, but I still made some mistakes, was learning new vocabulary, and getting better at both natural and novel writing
I expect when I'm 30, I'll look back on my level at 25 and see the same progression still going
You never really stop learning a language, even my fucking native french I still sometimes have to think about if a word needs an s at the end because of conjugation, or learn to use a rare word properly

Even if I was dropped in japan and started living there right now, I imagine I'd probably struggle conversing with anyone in any sort of natural adult manner for a couple years at least :c

Hey dumbass. You're never going to live in Japan. You literally dont need output beyond a few tourist phrases. Ignore that shit and just read and study the grammar sections.
No need to thank me when you figure that out on your own after being in denial about what im saying first.

You see something you can't understand, you look it up. Next time, you can't remember, so you look it up once more. Then you see it again, and after thinking for a bit, you recall how it worked. Then once again. And the next time you just read it, thinking to yourself "ha, got it, ez pz". And later you just read it without even noticing.
This is a natural process. Sure, it will take more time for a 40 year old than it would for a 10 year old kid.
On the other hand, you have a better ability to analyse, interpret and understand, while a kid would probably just memorise set phrases instead of trying to understand their construction.

I sometimes hear people saying this and can't understand how it even works. I booted up a game like this and could make sense of it without even studying, then slowly learned the language by playing like 200 ero-RPGs. If you're still struggling after 2k words/kanji you should just do the same. Having that shit under your belt will help you at least.

>Spending 5 minutes on one single sentence because you had to look up a bunch of words and grammar points isn't fun.
It is if you're reading a 1コマ or 4コマ. It feels rewarding to finish a page.
>>
>>748563232
there are tons of non-english speakers that would disagree hell like 99% of japs would disagree
the difficulty of learning a language mostly depends on how different it is compared to your native language
and both english and japanese are VERY different from mine
>>748563370
i fucking wish i could memorize japanese words after only seeing them twice
that aside i don't remember spending much if any time looking words up when i was learning english as a teen
and i sure as fuck didn't use any textbooks to learn grammar
that's mostly what i mean
the grammar came naturally through no active effort
meanwhile now every single grammar point i have to manually grind over and over and over and over until i memorize it by brute force

English is one of the easiest languages in the world, perhaps the easiest. Now you're trying to learn one of the hardest, if not the single hardest, especially for someone who isn't Chinese, although I heard they find it hard too, despite using similar "letters".

You were supposed to start reading with yomitan and supplement that with anki. Yes you will literally look up almost every word with yomitan, it will even explain grammar to you, you mine words you don't know and do anki for words you encounter during reading. The more hours you put into reading, the better you get.
-t. started reading at 1.5k learned words
Read Kanon or Narcissu, they're pretty simple, narcissu is very short, Kanon is long but a lot of it is pretty basic.
>>
>>748561308
Reading speed in particular is painful, since you're comparing it to your English reading speed built over decades. It'll probably be relatively good in 5 years.
It'll bother you less when you're reading interesting shit though.
>>
>>748564829
yomitan doesnt even know which kanji or kana belong to what word though. It's a mess of trying to figure out where words end and begin before even getting to the language learning part.
>>
>>748564474
Well yes but that isn't really comparable because Japs dislike foreigners way more than a Frenchman dislikes an Englishman or a Spaniard dislikes a German
>>
>>748564861
i dunno, even if the material is good, reading it at like 10% speed is still extremely painful
think of your favorite VN. can you really say you wouldn't enjoy it less if you had to read every sentence out loud 10 times?
>>
>>748564946
Wut? No, it does? Though it will try to scan as far as possible, sometimes picking up full phrases / sentences. If you go through a grammar guide and learn kana, this shouldn't be an issue. Unless you're reading some text where lots of kanji is replaced with kana, or an old NES game. Can you give an example?

When the material is good you're more focused on what's going to happen next. When it's boring shit you're just trying to get through, reading it slow as shit gets unbearable.

Clearly the amount of text matters too, reading manga is easier at slow speeds than reading visual novels, and when I started out I tried to pick stuff without a lot of text, but when the material is actually interesting you don't really even notice how much text you're going through.

Nice! I'm hovering around N4 and I started reading LNs recently. I feel like I've made so much progress in the past month or so. So far I've stumbled my way through Yotsuba, Soremachi, and most of Genshiken. I think a common trap a lot of newbies fall for is that they feel like they need to already be at a certain reading level to try something. But that's not true (within reason, you're obviously not gonna be ready to start reading N1 shit the day after you learn kana), trying more difficult things is how you get better!

Actually I want to sperg out for a second. In education, this is called the ZPD (zone of proximal development). That middle ring is where the learning happens. In this case "assistance" means things like your pop-up dictionary, translation tools, and grammar references. The important thing to remember is that this area is always shifting, so the material you study needs to always be changing as well. It feels great to go back to something easier and read it without no difficulties, but if you do that for too long, you're just stagnating. Likewise, if you set your sights too high, you won't really learn anything because you'll have no god damn idea what you're looking at. Even if you plug the entire thing into a translator, you're not improving because it's so above your current level that you can't even begin to figure out how to read it yourself. I hope this makes sense.

Using Nativshark, I find their lessons/sentences very good at straddling the line between easy to understand and absolutely arcane, so you feel good about "hey, I understood that one and it's almost entirely complicated words" and "what the fuck are we even talking about here (but still recognize a word or two)"

>>748557546

>>748566734

>>
>>748566725
Reduce new cards to zero until you've got it under control. Anki is ultimately a review tool and isn't super useful for introducing you to new words. If you're swamping yourself in new words or too many reviews, none of it's gonna stick and you're just wasting your time. If you really can't get the number back down to a reasonable level, just reset entirely. That seems intimidating, but if you've really been retaining that vocab, you're gonna blow through those early cards super fast.
>>748566771
Start now! There is so much stuff you can read even when you're barely N5. The only way you're gonna get better at reading is by actually reading. It'll be slow and difficult at first but no amount of prep work will make it better. Rip the bandaid off.

Yeah almost like Japanese is a fucking dogshit language with too many homophones and a dogshit writing system designed to keep the populace illiterate during the middle ages. Same could be said about nearly every Asian language actually, but Japanese is by far the worst because there are so many homophones that when you render it phonetically it becomes almost incomprehensible once the degree of sophistication exceeds "hello how are you?" levels.

I'm not saying that the advent of realtime AI translation is going to kill every language but English, but I am saying that it's going to kill every language that's a pain in the ass to learn. The fact that any of these countries have managed to modernize with such ass backwards writing systems is really just a testament to how much you can force something that doesn't work to keep plodding forward with nothing but a stubborn refusal to accept reality.

Grammar is not too bad. The problem is USING IT (shit like だに~だに, blablaてまえ, と思いきや, ~かと思ったら, non-past+なり, past+なり, ~が早いか, や否や, etc.)
Expressing the 3rd conditional (conterfactual) is also a pain
