most VNs are very poorly written, the equivalent of a children's book in american literature. this isn't a translation thing either. in japan, VNs are considered lowbrow entertainment, and if the vocabulary or the plot is too difficult for a bottom-quartile person, japanese people will angrily refund. if you look through the japanese reviews for a VN with a comparatively large number of kanji (eg. Muramasa) you'll find over half the reviews complain that the vocab is too hard. VNs are considered the bottom-of-the-barrel for japanese writing, even below light novels.that's not to say that there are no good VNs, but most of them are total wastes of time. i say this as someone who reads insatiably and has read a hundred or more VNs, including super long ones (eg.
