The better your position, the more you are relegated into shitty item hell. The tracks themselves are slick, but the game will literally force you to stay in the lines if you don't perfectly do so. Try to take some shortcut? If you don't hit it at exactly the angle they want, the guiding hand will nudge you back onto the standard route. It's just not for someone like me.

Like any followup that follows normal series conventions is going to seen as a disappointment when it releases with 20% of the content its predecessor eventually ended up with. The open world was definitely an attempt to find some alternative to releasing "Mario Kart 8 but with less courses and characters". Smash is probably in an even worse predicament because how the hell do you do something like that in Smash? Plush Smash has the issue that so much of it's cast can't appear in the sequel because they're guest characters who would have to have the rights renegotiated.

If they want to add new courses, they'll need to separate it from the rest of the game, which would be clunky and basically like admitting the gimmick sucks, or they'll need to make a new open world island, which would take a long time to do. Considering it's taking so long, I imagine they're doing the latter. But then that also raises questions like "what kind of new map can we make?" I would've gone with a DK themed island, to tie in with Bananza, but I guess that ship's long sailed.
