They captured most of the pc gaming market and use "price parity" policy to deny other stores from undercutting them with cheaper games which in return denies customers. Developers have no choice but to sell on steam because they have the biggest customer base. Steam is effectively a monopoly. They set the prices, they make the rules, devs have to suck up to them, other stores have to suck up to them, customers have to suck up to them. This is a terrible situation for everyone involved except Valve who gets to exploit everyone and buy infinite yachts.
