Metroid Prime 1 is currently #11 on Metacritic's highest rated games of all time, and was firmly in the top 10 for well over a decade. Despite this, not one game has really attempted to recreate what made this game resonate so well with those who played it. Plenty of games have claimed to be "inspired" by it, but none have really tried to replicate its atmosphere, world building, and game design.
Unlike the other legendary titles on the list, and even others in its own franchise, Prime didn't leave behind a lingering ghostly influence to touch games that came after it.
It can't really be compared to the cultural moment of Mario 64 & Zelda 64, either. Prime was long after that first jump to 3D. Even Halo came out a year before it, so you can't argue that it was simply novel to explore an immersive alien planet in first person.
It's something else, something much more specific that made this game so beloved.
>>
Because the people that rate this game that high either a) never played it, b) never beat it, or c) are boomers (uncllennials) that haven't beat it since 2002 and it reminds them of a time before joint custody.

Metroid has actual gameplay. It really is that simple.

>GameCubesnoys genuinely believe this when Prime 4 improved on most of its gameplay/general level design
>>
>>748832854
Metroid Prime was a pure, straight shot at exactly what it intended to do- create an inspired 3D interpretation of a very simple and [at the time] somewhat niche formula. It's because of the simplicity of "just make a Metroid game but in 3D". No gimmicks, no new one insane tech. Just jump, shoot, roll into a ball, and solve some very straight forward combat encounters and puzzles. There's nothing else like it because nothing is anywhere near as confident in its premise and execution to the point where the flaws only really show themselves in the last few moments of gameplay and are quickly overshadowed (those being the lack of faster/comfortable traversal and 0 indication on the map where missing power ups are leading everyone to buy a guide and check things off as they go, insane to me that this never gets addressrd).
It's a complete package that doesn't treat itself as anything special or bigger than it is. It was treated and crafted as a humble homage to a beloved franchise moreso than some explosive new entry that breaks ground, which is impressive in the face of it being considered the latter by almost everyone that experienced it.
>>
I enjoyed everything the music the atmosphere hell even the back tracking to get every last rocket and health upgrade. Pure quinoa. Did not enjoy any of the sequels

I didn't appreciate Prime 2 as much when I was kid coming off of Prime 1 being my favorite game ever. I later learned to appreciate how much it got right seeing how badly they fucked Prime 3 up, and later 4.
Atmosphere is 90% of what I value in these games and Prime 2 does it really well, even in the super techy Sanctuary Fortress and the suffocating dark world component.

40 y/o here. I loved Prime until it asked me to backtrack across all of the previous levels to collect some shit. I barely tolerated it with MGS, by the time I played Prime I was already stuck in a shitty wagie life and couldn't be bothered wasting my time. Zelda Wind Waker suffered the same fate with its shitty late game triforce fishing bullshit.
>>
>>748832854
It reinvented the wheel for console FPS competently, so it's miles better than all the sloppa games that just backported mouselook to consoles.
Gun&ball gamers from 6th gen simply have no standards, they bought a PS2 for FIFA and DVDs.

There are five groups of people who seethe over Prime's success.
>2D Metroid fags
They were the most justified haterbase as the main series took the back seat for a decade and a half (Other M doesn't exist) until the literal Return of Samus and Dread revealing itself as a lich. The 2 Metroid fagbases have pretty much reconciled now and both eagerly await the release of Metroid Ravenous.
>Quakefags and other PC elitists
Most of the shit Prime gets is for being on a Nintendo platform, so you used to (and still do) hear stupid shit like "Metroid Prime is not an FPS" or "FPSs can't have platforming". This has since collapsed after Doom Eternal's success, but the older folk still treat Prime like any other Nintendo baby game. Also Quakefags are the niggers of the FPS umbrella. All they do is pick fights with everyone else.
>ADHD zoomers and alphas
They get bored and don't want to read scans because it's difficult to multitask with and can't splitscreen alongside subway surfer. Not much else to probe here since their skulls are nearly hollow.
>nu-/v/
If it's not Dark Souls, they'll call [insert game beloved by /v/] overrated trash. The irony is that Lordran is basically a Metroid map right down to the elevators between areas.
>(you)
You are a normal human being with unique taste and just didn't like it. But instead of moving on, you made it your mission to bitch about the game in these threads every month acting like it's the worst game you've ever played.
>>
Funny topic. I was thinking about something similar just last week, "why does no one copy Metroid prime despite it being one of the best 3d games ever made?" I honestly don't know, it should be possible.
>>
>>748839384
>the older folk
>>
>>748833779
I like the game, but it's way too easy. I can play it on its hardest difficulty and not die even once. And I do not believe in self-imposed challenges. That is the game's job to challenge me. If it can't handle me at my best, then it's lacking.
>>
>>748839518
Those people were in their 20s when Prime released anon. They are pushing 50 now.
>>
>>748839384
i dont seethe over it but i do laugh at prime fanboys because they are usually cubesnoys who cant handle criticism
take mario 64 for example this is my fav game ever right but if someone really didnt like it then i would totally understand
it controls poorly and has some early 3d jank and on real hardware it is blurry etc i could see many reasons why someone would not like it and of course that is fine
why i laugh at prime fans and sometimes take the piss is that they treat their fav game like some untouchable masterpiece and anyone who says otherwise is a non nintendo fan or never owned a gamecube or some other such excuse
>>
>>748832854
Making a proper 3D metroidvania is incredibly hard, unlike in 2D where indies shit them out. Prime 1 and 2 are the only successes in history, prime 3 if you really stretch it.

Fuck no, what gay headcanon is this? SM3D, Dread and Rav are all fucking dogshit animu slop that lost the core identity of 2D Metroid (Super). >>

>Samus completely vaporized him at point blank
Ridley was literally caught in the blast field of Zebes as it was completely atomized into nothing. He came back in Other M as a clone, and then came back again in Fusion as a frozen popsicle.
>>
>>748834538
>no gimmicks
Absolutely wrong. The scan visor and the huge amount of flavor text and world-building was entirely unlike what Metroid had been before that and being able to download info on an enemy while fighting it that may give tips or strategies to defeat it was super novel. One could sort of make the argument that Navi in OoT did something similar and the Scan Visor is definitely an evolution of that concept but it did so much more that pretending that Prime was 'just' Super Metroid but 3D with no new design choices is a disservice.

Yes, why does the ancient warrior race, the civilization that conquered the galaxy, that has almost entirely disappeared, matter so much to the fanbase? Why do people want to know more about the ancient warrior race that armed Samus with planet buster tier weaponry? Why do people want to know the exact moment that caused many of them to have a sudden change of heart and use their technology and wisdom to mentor lesser races like the Luminoth rather than conquer them?

Prime is fucking trash, a disgrace to Super (which is already overrated)
>one-stick first person movement feels terrible
>extremely cramped 60° FOV especially bad since you must lock in place to be able to even turn your head slightly
>for some reason manually aiming up and down is some herculean effort and you must jam the stick for like 5+ seconds just to slowly crawl your arm up
>numerous areas are near pitch black dark with no flashlight (or even suit glow)
>constant backtracking and ping-ponging to opposite ends of the world
>new power-up paths all result in dead-ends aside from the one prescribed critical path (the game even recognizes its progression and navigation are terrible which is why it blatantly signposts everything with a literal quest marker)
>bosses are dull Simon Says dogshit
>no consistent way to farm missiles back if you waste them aside from backtracking all the way back to the ship or one of the few rare missile refill stations
>scanning shit constantly is incredibly tedious and boring
>enemies offer no incentive to bother with them and you can just run right past 90% of them barely taking a scratch
>environments are extremely bland and generic (hot zone, cold zone, grass zone, rock zone)
>environments are very visually flat and hard to read (especially in conjunction with the narrow FOV and restricted camera movement)
>first-person platforming sections with a 60° FOV unsurprisingly feel terrible
>map system is mostly fine except transitions between areas require you to completely exit that area, scroll over to the other area map, and then manually line up where the two meet
>movement is incredibly underwhelming compared to Super Metroid and you are constantly starting and stopping
>last third of the game becomes a shitty cover shooter in a game with some of the absolute worst combat and first person controls out there
>cockblocks you at the end with massive long backtracking fetch quest for all the remaining chozo artifacts

Nobody can replicate it because it took a team of some of the most talented developers on earth being crunched with 100+ hour work weeks for it to happen
Creating a cohesive 3D world that's interesting to explore is unbelievably difficult and labor intensive, literally every room in prime is full of completely unique art assets that are meticulously placed and thought out with intent
the entire world design was built around the hardware limitations of the gamecube in order to make it as seamless as possible
The team had to be whipped into shape by miyamoto and other nintendo higher ups in order to even get the game out, and even then there's stuff that still feels unfinished like the impact crater, though it's still well realized for what it is

The Chozo's entire backstory is they were a warrior race who conquered much of the galaxy and held a massive empire. The problem was they spent so much time being warriors and forgot to breed, by the time they realized it they were all past the breeding age and most of them decided to stop being warriors and become watchers over the cosmos, leaving their statues and technology on various worlds to tell their story and for anyone who could use them. The Mawkin tribe were the only one who remained warriors and conquerors.

Three times, actually. Them losing control of the Emmi, the Other M incident, and the Fusion incident. If the feds are such incompetent retards that they risk ice-resistant metroids, AND an x infestation, AND losing control of their commissioned robots, then they need to be dealt with.

And yet you keep ignoring how convenient it is that it's immune to all her weaponry, and is designed to extract DNA. The same metroid DNA that the feds wanted to experiment on in Fusion. And the feds don't even apologize for it, they basically order her to get the emmis back, barely paying her scraps. ADAM even comments on how pitiful the payment is. Almost like they never intended her to return alive.

>It's because of the simplicity of "just make a Metroid game but in 3D"
You think so, but there's layers of gimmick going on under the hood. It began when Shiggy demanded they give Samus "an insect head" so they got a first person adventure with different visors and switching between beams, ect. It goes as far to where they were WORRIED that the game would be too short, they asked Nintendo for advice and they insisted Retro add a "triforce shards/charts quest" to pad out the game. Retro wasn't even done there, the game loads areas as you approach them, AND THEY STILL proceeded to add those elevator cutscenes we didn't need.

People overlook a lot about Prime 1, and thus exaggerate its quality, and overrate the game.

It's retroactively hilarious that Samus was surprised by the secret Metroid breeding program in Fusion after it already happened.
>>
The game is all about vibes, exploring *without* fast travel, and the fact that you're truly alone. The music is a big part of the appeal, and the earthy naturalistic feel of the planet.
If I had to break it down as a video game, it's good still. Every part of it works, and is more or less fun. It's not mind-blowing by any means. Bosses are maybe a little spongy.
You could make Metroid Prime and make it a lot better, and it's kind of strange that Retro have failed to do that three times now.
>>

Yes, they were made to be able to withstand hostile environments, hostile life forms, and do their job. Raven Beak forced Quiet Robe to have them target Samus. You are the one who insists the Federation secretly made them to go after only Samus.
>>
>>748846167
Other M was an extremely lazy remake of Fusion, it can be completely ignored and none of the lore or story is affected.
>>
>>748846765
it only explains why there is a Ridley in the freezer but otherwise yea I prefer to ignore its existence.
>>
>>748846574
And conveniently they're immune to all of Samus' custom chozo weapons, AND their DNA extractors insta-kill samus regardless of how much energy or health or armor she has. Tell me, has any enemy ever been able to do that in the entirety of metroid? If we're excluding Diggernaut.

What I'm saying is that these evil cunts have no right making weapons of any kind, after they've been shown doing shady and illegal weapons experiments behind Samus' back. They deserve to be killed even if the Emmi were just regular robots that didn't have dedicated anti-samus weapons and armor. Hell, the feds deserved to be killed for the Prime 4 incident.
>>
>>748847010
Many things are immune to Samus' weapons.
>>
>some feds doing seriously shady shit in Other M and Fusion MUST mean that the ENTIRE organization has been COMPLETELY compromised!
No, you stupid bitches, that's not how it works.
The feds are not in the clear for what happened in Fusion, that much is true, but there is no fucking way that the federation, as a collective, gave Other M and Fusion the go-ahead.
Ideally, this would be addressed in a future game, or at least supplementary media like the manga, but I personally can't imagine we won't see an intergalactic civil war break out once the galaxy learns that the greatest bounty hunter to have ever lived is now also a space-fairing Metroid.

Ironically enough, it's the Prime games that support the notion that the Federation isn't corrupt, unlike Fusion and Other M.
Admiral Dane would've been fucking appalled.

Metroid Prime is just one of those lighting in a bottle games. You can’t recreate perfection.
>>
>>748833779
>series is played by troons nonstop
>the game that introduces them all into speedrunning
>every Metroid thread descends into them throwing shitfits to talk bad about another troons favourite Metroid
It's genuinely one of the very few series you just cannot discuss anywhere anymore.
>>
>>748847098
How many federation commissioned weapons are immune to her, though? The ones we see in the Prime series are built with the durability of tissue paper, and will die to typical space pirate weapons like it was nothing. How convenient that now they've mastered the art of making unkillable war machines that require hyper advanced chozo technology to put down, when they struggle to even replicate Samus' weapons and armor.

>>748847219
The problem is that Samus keeps accepting jobs from these corrupt fucks. If Raven Beak hadn't corrupted the EMMIs, you can bet that Samus would've recovered them and brought them back like a cuck, not even bothering to ask questions like why they sent DNA extractor robots to deal with the potential X parasite infestation, when the previous game established that they want the X to survive so they can turn them into a weapon. How did that not send off a million red flags? If the emmi weren't personally designed to kill Samus, then she should've still been wary that these DNA harvesting robots were being used to harvest a bioweapon so deadly that Samus had to crash a space station into a planet to ensure that they stayed dead.

add the Metroid that Sylux stole from the feds in the end of fed force to the list

>>748837461
Prime 1 at least lets you pick them up naturally along the course of the game if you're being thorough. Prime 2 simply locks them behind a lategame upgrade to pad out game time. That's true bullshit.
>>
>>748847472
>>748847595
I'm not dismissing it, read, cunts.
The corruption does need to be addressed, and I trust that it will be, during or after Ravenous.
Honestly it probably depends on what state the Space Pirates are in post-Super, because if they're gone for good, then they've left a power vacuum in their absence, but if they're still around then why haven't we heard anything from them since Super?
>>
>>748844439
You're asking questions that you know will not be handled or answered properly by Nintendo. Someone else brought up Halo here dropping the ball with the Forerunners which is a good comparison as to why you don't make your vague mysterious super-advanced but now extinct alien race in your sci-fi franchise that much screentime because most of the time the writing will be bad and unsatisfactory. Movies dont even pull this off well like the Aliens franchise.

ESA is clearly aiming for Metroid, though I didn't love that game as much as I had hoped.
>>
>>748849018
>Prime 2 simply locks them behind a lategame upgrade to pad out game time.
That's true bullshit. Prime 1 does as much the same thing, no matter how you dice it. All you need to begin finding sky temple keys are the Luminoth scans and the dark visor. There's other parallels between the games, such as needing power bombs or spiderball or plasma beam, ect to get some of those artifacts. Use your brain.

and Prime 2 is just a vastly better designed game, period, anyway.
>>
>>748849203
>The corruption does need to be addressed, and I trust that it will be, during or after Ravenous.
I would love for it to be addressed, but japan is full of authority worshipping bootlickers, so samus ever questioning her masters is out of the question. In Other M, she literally rolled over and practically waited for the corrupt feds to lock her up in prison. Hell, I'm shocked that she didn't let them come and take the SA-X for their bio experiments, since she's so averse to disobeying authority. Then again, Adam did order her to destroy sr388 and the station, so maybe her female brain followed that priority.

Yes, that is the lategame upgrade I am talking about in Prime 2. No such limitation exists in 1. You fundamentally do not understand the conversation, bot/jeet.
>>
>>748849607
I'd need to replay 2 eventually but in Prime 1 the artifact collection is just a victory lap across the world allowing you to collect all remaining upgrades if you know where things are of course cause then it's surprisingly linear. Like the one artifact at the edge of phendrana where you conveniently pass by tons of upgrades that require plasma beam.
>>
>>748849689
>In Other M, she literally rolled over and practically waited for the corrupt feds to lock her up in prison.
Because Other M is written like dogshit, even the few Japanese fans of Metroid know that Samus in that game isn't herself, and they got the better version of the script.
No one likes talking about Other M because Samus is out of character in that game, so no one will consider her actions in Other M, because Other M wasn't made in good faith.
>>
I'd like to also emphasize that Japanese fans of Metroid do not hold much love for Metroid's unholy trinity, despite each game being an attempt to cater to them specifically.

None of the sky temple keys are accessible until you get the dark visor, which is 2/3rds of the way through the game. 5 out of 9 sky temple keys require the light suit, which is the final item obtained.

Only one of Prime's artifacts requires the phazon suit, the last item.
>>
>>748851487
Plasma beam, power bomb, these are things obtained in the last level of Prime 1, and they are required for half the artifacts. It's the same thing, dingus.
>>
>>748849867
Dark visor is obtained in the second area of the game, it's literally not a late game item you fucking tard.
>>
>>748850085
That's the Prime 2 experience as well, as another anon pointed out you wind up with the light suit and no longer receive damage from the environment so you get your "victory lap" and it's particularly satisfying. People sleeping on Prime 2, better music, better level design, better bosses, better everything honestly.
>>
>>748851908
It's the last item you receive in the second of three areas.
>>
>>748851908
It's one of the last items, and you also need the Luminoth scans for some fucktarded reason. Confirmed for hallucinating retard bot.
>>
>>748852035
Not a late game item, you get it before the last area. Better points can be made, as brought up half of Prime 1's artifacts require items from its last area. Shove it.
>>
>>748852168
You need the luminoth scans because those are hints on where the fucking keys are, fuck off and kys.
>>
>>748852262
You shouldn't need to scan the hints just to unlock them physically on the map, you 75 IQ pile of feces. Flush yourself.
>>
>>748851981
I liked the presentation of Prime 1 more but in terms of upgrades and a other things Prime 2 is better. Some reskinned enemies and the dark world leave some bitter aftertaste however. I seriously need to replay it at some point as in Prime I reached the point I just stroll through with minimal backtracking and get my 100% in under 6h
>>
I've been playing Prime Origins and it really makes me appreciate how well the different areas in Prime fit together. It's basically a room by room demake of Prime, and I'm surprised at how well the overall flow still works in a 2D setting.
>>
>>748852316
You don't need to scan the hints, FUCK OFF AND KILL YOURSELF. I am tired of your fucking retardation, you don't understand jack shit.
>>
>>748851830
5/12 artifacts can be obtained before the power bombs. How many can be obtained before the dark visor, which is immediately before the last area of echoes?
>>
>>748852349
Says the retard that didn't know the Dark Visor is the last upgrade in the game. You are either a hallucinating bot or a seething fecaloid just looking for a fight.
>>
>>748852387
idk, but there's only 9 of them compared to 12 in Prime 1

>>
>>748851830
to be fair after you obtain the power bombs you have to fall back to get the xray visor. While doing so you can pick up the grapple hook followed by xray and an artifact. With the grapple hook you can get the plasma beam and with this the map is all yours except for one artifact that requires the Phazon Suit and the energy tank behind omega.

One of the artifacts is literally in the same room as x ray. And plasma is right next to Phendrana, where three more become available. Fags failed to learn the map and blame the game for their idiocy.
>>
>>748852725
Yes. Thank you for posting the promo art for the game I am currently playing.
>>
>>748852884
I remember that there is a pretty straight forward path from xray visor/artifact room to the plasma beam, from there you can pick up the other artifact in magmor and the power bomb tank, go further and get the super missile artifact and from there up the elevator to get the Artifact in the Flaahgra room and from there clear the rest of chozo ruins. The thing is anyone who plays this the first or the second time likely wont notice this. It's something you need multiple playthroughs for.
