I prefer if the smithing is actually part of your character's background like in Summon Night and KCD and it's a core mechanic, unlike say Skyrim where it's just some extra crafting shit like alchemy or enchanting that's not essential.

Blades of Fire has some fun smithing. A bunch of different kinds of weapons and materials, and different shapes for each part to modify stats. Plus, you have to actually hammer the metal out to shape it, which isn't super challenging but keeps fresh with all the different shaped weapons
