Why did metroidvanias, my most beloved genre, go from games based around exploration, finding secrets, upgrades and absorbing yourself in the worlds unique fauna into 2D dark souls where the point of the game is that it’s hard and you get gamer cred if you win? I want to go back.

GRIME I absolutely hated at the start with the strong focus on parryslop and no npc talking retarded zanzibart nonsense instead of just saying what is going on. But as I played it got better. I think it really clicked when I got the airdash which opened up platform exploration in a really fun way and soon after I actually found a city where people would just say their feelings, intentions and how this world works. The last dlc area was a full blown hardcore parcour that required using all of your platforming abilities in very tight spacing and timing. It was a joy to see he dev grow and get better that much from the initial slop start.
