What's the appeal of this derivative genre that makes it deserve its own category based on a specific country? I genuinely and sincerely don't see the appeal of it compared to other genres.

Subject is censored as to not trip the filters of schizos that perpetually live on this board.

Nothing, 4 niggas in a row is by its very design limited compared to ARPGs and TRPGs. The few good games (E33, Black Souls 2) are good in spite of their genre, not because of it.

i have never seen anyone call fire emblem a jrpg, always an srpg

when done right no other genre matches the sense of adventure, storytelling, character writing, music or atmosphere. SRPGs have no exploration and litte immersion, WRPGs have shitty stories and writing and all look exactly the same because apparently westoids cant imagine an rpg setting that isnt dnd shit.

it is rarely done right, but thats true for all genres

WRPG fans got sick of looking for RPGs and getting recommended games which don't play similarly (JRPGs)

Language evolved naturally to solve the problem

JRPG and WRPG are terms made up by gaming journalists in the 90s/early 2000s to sell products.
In the past, people used to differentiate between Western RPGs and Japanese RPGs with the terms "computer RPG" and "console RPG", and usually added the prefix Japanese or Western/American/whatever since different countries had different design philosophies when it came to roleplaying games. In Japan, for a while, the Japanese themselves even referred to archetypical "JRPGs" as light RPGs.

The term JRPG just kind of stuck because Japan has had a completely different relationship with fantasy, the roleplaying genre, and tabletop games than the West generally has. Japanese ARPGs are generally nothing like Western ARPGs, Japanese SRPGs are generally nothing like Western SRPGs, Japanese turn-based RPGs are generally nothing like Western turn-based RPGs, etc.

Old Western RPGs were the way they were because of the limitations at the time and quickly evolved and broke away from those limitations as computers became better in the 90s/2000s and more creative people entered the field.
JRPGs, on the other hand, looked at those old Western RPG limitations and instead of breaking away with them as technology evolved, chose to greatly expand and evolve these archaic early-mid 80s mechanics into something more modern and palatable.

It's the reason why Skyrim plays nothing like Ultima/Wizardry but something like Trails of Cold Steel still feels like it can trace its mechanical lineage back to Dragon Quest 1/Final Fantasy 1 and ultimately Ultima/Wizardry.

Of course this isn't always the case, since retro-style WRPGs are still being made and there's JRPGs that completely break away from typical gameplay conventions like Xenoblade or Dark Souls (though the latter takes more from old Japanese ARPGs than people like to admit)

I've seen this parroted around for over a decade and can't find a single instance of a Japanese person actually doing it. I've searched ライトRPG, 軽いRPG, help me out here. Do you actually know this to be true or are you just accepting it because you've heard other people say it?

It was never about literally being made in Japan. It was about western rpgs being more of a sandbox and japanese being more of a moviegame. It's ok to hate jrpgs because movie games should've died with the 7th gen already.

JRPG isn't a genre

Western RPGs took most of the design philosophies from DnD and high fantasy novels and pagan fables unique to Europe. Whereas JRPGs are tyically coming of age stories with some sort of theological perspective of divine nature explored.
