When did you realize the English text in Japanese games is all just pure fanfiction?
>>748894616During the 3DS era of Fire Emblem.
>>748894616>why are they never punished?
>>748894616Get rid of female script editors and this problem goes away.
The name changed from HANA JD to POPPI QT PIE?
>>748895708She didn't say that
>>748895708In JP she goes from Hana JS, to Hana JK, to Hana JDIn EN she goes from Poppi alpha, to Poppi QT, to Poppi QT PI
>>748894616Some years ago when /v/ made it very obvious to me. Pretty sure it was FE threads
>>748895747How would you know? Were you there?
>>748895951>Poppi alpha, to Poppi QT, to Poppi QT PISuch retarded names. I want to punch whoever suggested those.
>>748894616So what's the original
>>748896113Whats your idea ken sama, keeping japanese school abbreviations ?
>>748894616FFVI, FFVII, FFVIIIThese people deserve the worst, including its defenders.
>>748895747She would though if given the chance
>>748896212>keeping japanese school abbreviations?Yes
>>748896212Hana Cunny, Hana Hebe, Hana Cake.
>>748896345Dumb weebLocalization is adaptation
>>748896212It would make just as much sense as alpha, QT and QT Pi so why not?
>>748896385Sorry we don't use those gook names, what about hannah cunny hannah hebe and hannah cake

>>748894616And yet they're always superior. This will be my only post. Continue to seethe subtards.
>>748896458Alpha as in early stagesQT is cutieQT pi is cutie pieYou retarded weeb how is a wordplay same as using japanese school stuff

>>748894616
>>748895708>>748896113>>748896345
>>748896479kek alright I'd compromise on those.
>>748894616Localization is better.
>>748896115>Hey Zeke, you can spoil me some more woof>This is my hidden bestial function, dog ear version
>>748896115>Wan, wan wan wan!
>>748896553Those don't convey anything about her age and school status like the jp version, thoughever. It's not even a "bad" translation, it's not a translation at all.
>>748896524The English equivalent would be someone who talks like Yosemite Sam.
>>748896971AI is objectively better here
>>748897107Thats not her age or school status too, it doesnt even stand for "joshi daigakusei" its short for "Judgement Day"
>>748894616Yeah let me just read a language I can't understand, fucking dumbass.
>>748897235skill issue
>>748897232>it doesnt even stand for "joshi daigakusei" its short for "Judgement Day"
>>748896524Depends on the sentence. English doesn't have a written dialectal equivalent. Most ε½Ήε²θͺ can't be directly translated, though certain characterizations could be included to help demonstrate it (e.g., a well-placed "sonny boy" or a "heavens to Betsy" to help express age).
>>748894616When they fuck up a character's sex in FF14 so badly they first went with the excuse that the character was turned into a tranny by a dragon which most people will see in game, only to make up some bullshit years later in a lore book nobody actually reads.
>>748897379
>>748897508Why did this Japanese woman become British?
>>748897594england can't have their bri-ish localization?
>>748897807I prefer to use the term "shouldn't"
>>748897112yeah i'm sure professor oak should talk like yosemite samfucking retard
>>748897864yeah he should that would be funny
>>748894616When I watched some bilingual streamer cross-reference the scripts in real-time. The every so often controversy really doesn't paint full picture. Normally it gets swamped in culture shit that misses a lot of the persuasive tone issues and basic mistakes.
>>748898329good post esl bro
>>748896452They really adapt it when they miss basic punctuation. It is really strange how common a question that is clearly question and marked as a question, somehow that part gets lost in translation.
>>748896762kill yourself you mentally ill incel
This is gonna be a thread of all the same Nintendo Treehouse shit that gets thrown around every time, innitYou can at least click around on Legends of Localization to see some actually interesting examples instead of getting spoonfed somebody's personal vendetta presented as an industry jihad
>>748898746Don't you mean γγ€?
>>748898949Legends of Localization has the same problem every one of those translation comparison sites have, which is that they're too afraid to actually be critical. So there will be big elephants in the room, and they won't mention it because they don't want to start shit.
>>748899115>which is that they're too afraid to actually be criticalI think you're mistaking not being a pink wojak IRL for not being critical, LoL calls these "bad translations" outright
>>748894649that guy literally won and married a qt japanese woman though.
>>748898949LoL defends localization and its practice. I have no respect for the man. The only thing he goes hard on is fantranslations.
>>748898329Got a link? I want to actually see how much is wrong
I prefer translations rather than localizations but accept that localizations are an acceptable middle ground if it means products are more ecconomically viable and more titles are released in the West as a result. However the state the industry is in localisers all too often overstep the bounds and drift into rewrite territory, disrespecting both the source material and audience.
>>748899630I wasn't talking about Xenoblade. No one's done it for Xenoblade. Different game series. Valkyria Chronicles. Just spend a few months doing flashcards and reading a grammar guide. And have a dictionary on hand. You can see how heavily altered Xenoblade is in OP. You're not going to be missing much by having suboptimal comprehension. Watch a Japanese stream even.
>>748899807>translations rather than localizationsLocalization is part of translation. When you say you prefer translation to localization, what you mean is that you prefer accurate translations, which include some localization when necessary to preserve the meaning, to rewritten bullshit, which is the product of some hack fraud's incompetence. When you say you accept that localizations are an acceptable middle ground you're saying that you've given up and are willing to accept to current state of Japanese to English game translation.
>>748899807There's a difference between localizing things like pop culture references and jokes that only work in the native language versus completely changing lines because the Japanese are icky and I don't like what they wrote so I'm writing bullshit I made up.
>>748899807it's extremely important to remember these /v/ threads are some of the biggest bubbles on the entire internet and 99% of people don't give a shit
>>748899332Different guy. This guy just posed in a kimono his seamstress girlfriend made.
>>748897232So it's a four layer double entendre? That makes the translation worse, dont you get that?
>>748900149Which is unfortunate, because there are extremely incompetent "professional" translations that get a pass because no one thinks to check.
Isn't that the one where the localizer admitted to not knowing japanese.
>>748900149I would argue outside of dedicated fan bases the vast majority of consumers aren't even aware of what localization is or entails. They only ever interact with the sole iteration of the game available to them. Since voiced lines became industry standard and more developers have started offering JP dubs more people have become aware of flagrant digression from the original script.
A human-edited AI translation is already better than any localization
>>748901034internet's hit peak saturation and 99% of people still really don't give a shit, not a "rising tide" kind of thing
>>748901141I agree but the people who do care have gotten louder and more organised its not something that can be ignored or swept under the rug anymore you see that with the attacks on peoples professionalism at events or on social media.
>>748896971can't wait for ai to replace localizer scum
>>748901861>its not something that can be ignored or swept under the rug anymoreit's easy, watch
>>748895747It's localization, Ken-sama. She did say that, and it's the best thing she could've said.
>>748895951>Poppi alpha, to Poppi QT, to Poppi QT PIThat doesn't even make sense.
>>748897864I named my character "I SAY" specifically to make all the NPCs talk like Foghorn Leghorn
Mythra's kid koko! 62 days remain...!!
>>748900407huh.desu I still consider myself correct then.i think this hatred/dislike/cringing at people for being really into their hobbies to the point they have strong stances; is dumb.the guy likes jap shit. if you don't like him for that then I'd ask: what do you like? what do you care about then?I get it when it's say a weird 40 year old man with EVERY Barney VHS tape or whatever but ragging on some guy because he likes a certain country's culture way more is lame.i'm tired of irony poison.this image is cool as fuck.
