Depends on the sentence. English doesn't have a written dialectal equivalent. Most 役割θͺž can't be directly translated, though certain characterizations could be included to help demonstrate it (e.g., a well-placed "sonny boy" or a "heavens to Betsy" to help express age).

When I watched some bilingual streamer cross-reference the scripts in real-time. The every so often controversy really doesn't paint full picture. Normally it gets swamped in culture shit that misses a lot of the persuasive tone issues and basic mistakes.

They really adapt it when they miss basic punctuation. It is really strange how common a question that is clearly question and marked as a question, somehow that part gets lost in translation.

Legends of Localization has the same problem every one of those translation comparison sites have, which is that they're too afraid to actually be critical. So there will be big elephants in the room, and they won't mention it because they don't want to start shit.

I prefer translations rather than localizations but accept that localizations are an acceptable middle ground if it means products are more ecconomically viable and more titles are released in the West as a result. However the state the industry is in localisers all too often overstep the bounds and drift into rewrite territory, disrespecting both the source material and audience.
>>
>>748899630
I wasn't talking about Xenoblade. No one's done it for Xenoblade. Different game series. Valkyria Chronicles. Just spend a few months doing flashcards and reading a grammar guide. And have a dictionary on hand. You can see how heavily altered Xenoblade is in OP. You're not going to be missing much by having suboptimal comprehension. Watch a Japanese stream even.
>>
>>748899807
>translations rather than localizations
Localization is part of translation. When you say you prefer translation to localization, what you mean is that you prefer accurate translations, which include some localization when necessary to preserve the meaning, to rewritten bullshit, which is the product of some hack fraud's incompetence. When you say you accept that localizations are an acceptable middle ground you're saying that you've given up and are willing to accept to current state of Japanese to English game translation.
>>
>>748899807
There's a difference between localizing things like pop culture references and jokes that only work in the native language versus completely changing lines because the Japanese are icky and I don't like what they wrote so I'm writing bullshit I made up.
>>
>>748899807

>>
>>748897232
So it's a four layer double entendre? That makes the translation worse, dont you get that?
>>
>>748900149
Which is unfortunate, because there are extremely incompetent "professional" translations that get a pass because no one thinks to check.
>>
Isn't that the one where the localizer admitted to not knowing japanese.
>>
>>748900149
I would argue outside of dedicated fan bases the vast majority of consumers aren't even aware of what localization is or entails. They only ever interact with the sole iteration of the game available to them. Since voiced lines became industry standard and more developers have started offering JP dubs more people have become aware of flagrant digression from the original script.
>>
A human-edited AI translation is already better than any localization
>>
>>748901034
internet's hit peak saturation and 99% of people still really don't give a shit, not a "rising tide" kind of thing

This isn't true at all. The moment they get into foreign media they very quickly realize how bad dubbing and localization are. Just because it is less common for them to be into foreign media at all doesn't mean that they don't quickly realize the bullshit.
>>
>>748904302
anon, you're completely right. these retards need to be lobotomized, they're no different than the people trying to subvert any other hobby and destroy it. it'll never make logical sense to me to deliberately make a video game worse.
>>
>>748899807
This is a bad mind set. I'd genuinely rather a game never be brought over than it get an awful localization. Yokai watch had such a bad localization, and it was so annoying seeing everyone using the localized terms. It's especially dumb since keeping the original names and what not has the potential to actually teach people about neat things they never knew about, and that just goes out the window when you get shit like pissfartman(an exaggeration) as some localized name.
>>
Don't even get me started on Dragon Quests fanfic localization, bros....
>>
>>748896558
Gohan being Ricky, Kuririn being Chester, and Buluma being Blooma would have made DBZ way better.
>>
>>748904948
>>748905118
They actively make something not sexual into something sexual in their hysterical jihad. Moe very very easily could just be translated to cute even if that'd lose some context. Or you could keep it as moe as an increasing amount of people in the West are aware of it just like how virtually everyone now knows what kawaii means. If you want to try to make some change to make it fit in natural speech more, you could use something like "cutie-patootie" or "sweet/cutiepie". But this doesn't really make sense anyway, it is a recurring joke in otaku media that all the characters naturally use the nichest terms (like everyone knowing what a Lolita complex is). It really wouldn't be different at all for the characters to sound weebish through using moe. Any of this is better than deliberately turning it into something made to be cringe and sound sexual since the retarded localizers view the enjoyment of cuteness and beauty as some sort of extreme fetish.
>>
It's QTΟ€ you swines
>>
>>748905765
Legitimately, I think that would've single-handedly caused DBZ to fail in the west. At most only being popular with the lowest tier of slop enjoyers.
>>
>>748896524
They should sound like Abe Simpson or better yet, copy William Shatner.
But its literally just fanciful boomerspeak. Try and talk like an old man and it should come natural.

Where did this shit even come from anyway? In the past people openly obsessed over foreign cultures they thought were cool. Maybe moving into the later 20th century you'd be jokingly talked about in that regard like a maniac, but it wasn't derogatory nor was there an attempt to shame. But suddenly, now with the internet everyone treats their interests other than the few "safe" ones like they are a list of crimes or sexual deviancies. It is like modern people are so retarded they heard jokes of the past and thought they were both legitimate mockery and commands.

>>748900149
Plenty of people do care, my guy. Most just realize there is literally nothing that can be done about it other than maybe trying to get into localization yourself, but then you'd have to argue with your trannylator co-workers which could and has gotten people fired.

Do localizers really have to assume every Japanese game is the player's first ever contact with any Japanese media at all though?
>>
>>748897594
Thats probably a joke.
But if you check out scanlation threads on /a/, there's this guy that loves Shojo manga and also is extremely adamant that only British English and its dialects can be used to properly replicate Japanese speech and writing because American English doesn't have the dialectical depth.

>>
>>748900149
You have to know there's a problem to be bothered by something.
When you buy a foreign game from a reputable publisher, there's an assumption of quality involved.
Someone that is monolingual and not heavily invested in bilingual online spaces has zero way of telling that something was changed.
>>
>>748906497
Ironic, considering they don't believe in per capita and can't figure out if they're a boy or girl.
>>
>>748906242
Basically yeah.
Their guidelines (whether imposed or self-created) are often to make a game that some housewife from Nebraska can pick up and not be jilted by how Japanesey everything is.
In the old days that was definitely dictated from top-down. But these days with a lot of older translators, it seems habitual.

Even then. You look at the recent situation with Umamusume. What does this have to do with making the Japanese presentable? They just suck. Pure incompetence.
>>
>>748904948
It genuinely had to be localized that way. The scene is a joke skit based around an otaku character poorly explaining what 'moe' is to a bunch of normies. The problem is that westerners playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will read the description of 'moe' in the script and believe that it is accurate to how moe has been described to them before. They will not understand that 'moe' is an outdated term that people deep in actual otaku culture have not used seriously in a decade. They will completely miss every element of the scene that gives it humor.
>>
>>748906021
>but it wasn't derogatory nor was there an attempt to shame
are you for fucking real? weebs were always made fun of and not a funny and wholesome way and don't get me started on normalfags doing "ironic weeb" shit, even the actual weebs hate them
>>
>>748907156
Sorry faggot but the umamusume example is retarded because that character has 0 valley girl traits. It's the opinion of some literal who, completely unfamiliar with the game and character, trying to apply old-ass stereotypes.

In trying to rage against bullshit, morons like him and you end up falling in the same pit of having retarded, uninformed opinions. Horseshoe theory at its finest
