Is this actually a shump thread? I just got into the genre and would like to talk about it. I kind of avoided them as the typical sci-fi aesthetic of most prominent shumps is whatever to me but I've found myself really getting into the games that break away from space and take on more inspired art direction. Been trying to learn to 1CC Wings of Wor/Gynoug on normal but even on that setting the game kicks my ass hard. Never see this game mentioned much despite being by Technosoft (Thunder Force devs) but I think it's a grear introductionary shump. Normal mode is pretty easy and you both can take multiple hits, up to ten fully powered, and get five continues for the short seven level campaign. The expert difficulty mode isn't too tough to beat either once you understand the game but getting a 1CC on it is still a good challenge.

these games are really unique in their difficulty. Dark souls runbacks have nothing on the pure suffering of tanking a life and wasting 5 bombs in an otherwise perfect run on stage 4. No matter how much practice you have these games will test you mentally. It is so easy to make a trivial mistake and just crumble on a run where you still could have made a 1cc. It is an intriguing mixture of hope, despair, doubt, and perserverance all mixed into a memorization and reflex test that lasts 40 minutes and is so intense it is guaranteed to give epilectics an episode. There's a reason so few people can play them.
