I like playing old games on consoles on a TV over emulating them.

you probably don't even actually do that

for 2D and early 3D yeah, a CRT is essential or it just don't look right.

An LCD tv larping as a CRT which misses the entire point.

Fair.
Unfortunately not everyone as the possibilities to do that with current retro prices and availability. CRTs also get more rare.
>>748908523
Just get a 4k monitor and use one of those custom crt shaders which reproduce those CRT masks and grills.

Never understood the point of those shaders. They're not the reason people use tube televisions with old consoles, similarily that nobody used to care what kinda noise their keyboard used to make before redditors started calling buying things a hobby.

It's basically just because the games were made with the CRT mask in mind. When you look at PIxel art with these highly custom shaders (not just scanlines) and raw pixels the difference is apparent. At least that's why I use them.
Other than the default retroarch shaders, these custom ones for example are also popular:

https://forums.libretro.com/t/cyberlab-death-to-pixels-shader-preset-packs/35606

Usually those are made with 4K monitors in mind and ideally with hdr and oled. It's probably the next best thing after an actual CRT.
>>
>>748907427
Well I do too, in theory; however I want ergonomic controllers, machines that work well and the ability to put the machine I'm playing on in some sort of sleep mode.

I'm not usually a whore for convenience, but when it comes to playing old video games being able to put literally ALL of the pre-PS3 console games I want on my Steam Deck, have them portable, easily available, running at 60 fps, with the ability to hook it to my TV and my 8bitdo controller to the docked Steam Deck... it's just too good to pass up.
And if you can't get/don't want to pay for a Steam Deck, there are several other cheaper options as well now.

I have full respect for you purists, though.

i miss when video cards has svideo out. My second monitor was a CRT. was kino for watching shitty anime encodes from the 2000s.

nta but a real crt wouldnt have that screen door effect making it 50% darker. It would be as clear as the left but with the details of the right
>>
>>748911261
I'm replying to a post asking about the shaders here. Which attempt to replicate the effect of CRT screens, making it look the same (at least as close as possible) as CRTs.
I could have been clearer about that, indeed.

While shaders are much better than just raw pixels, they lack both the brightness and motion clarity. Even on 4k oled while using black frame insertion, it might be fluid you lose alot on brightness and overall it still just doesn't feel nearly as good. It's an ok substitute. Best of all worlds is mister to a crt
>>
>>748919245
Try your local electronics recycling center. Most places have to pay to have them disposed of due to the gases contained within the tubes. I got 17 CRTs for free that way (mostly security monitors, however, I did obtain a Sony KV-13FS110, a Sony KV-32FS120, a eMachines 17f3 and an iMac G3). I got fairly lucky as many places refuse to give them away for whatever reason.

They're great for old video games and TV shows.
>>
I think the crt meme is overblown and the game looks just as good on an emulator with a very light tv mode filter

Takes entire factories of professionals to produce and the market is too niche. CRTs also last decades. So once all the hobbyists buy them up you're effectively out of business.

Wiis are cheap too (only expensive thing is an original wiimote and a classic controller).

How come movie and animation people never sperg out about crts?
>>
>>748933351
Well most old movies were made for the big screen, they weren't even made for VHS. That was just an after thought to get more sales.
Cartoons I don't know enough about to comment on, but people do get persnickety about old anime on CRTs.

Picture quality is better due the more modern DAC, don't need to pay a fortune to scalpers, don't need to deal with shoddy flashcards, dead controllers, shit old PSUs, recaps...
A nice modernish 2000's TV, a raspi and perfection.

>>748928309
ofc they aren't as reliable as they used to be but it says something when these TV's and monitors have lasted this long. Most of the time you can live with a few issues or try and do some simple fixes yourself.

Doing repairs should also be something you're ready for to some degree if you're into old tech/consoles in general

You don't even play games with your face an inch from the screen. Look at the thumbnail and they look practically the same except left looks like it has a longer face.
>>
>>748930590
It's disappointing to see the lack of basic knowledge on this thread. filters and shaders can only get you so far. The real benefit of CRT's lies in their fundamentally different approach to drawing the picture, a method that has 0 motion blur. Honestly LCD's look like low quality garbage when it comes to gaming, especially retro gaming, when put next to a CRT. One pan of the camera and it all comes crashing down for any flat panel display.
>>
>>748938168
You play with your monitor 10 meters away from you? Because that's the only way you're going to see Dracula's face that small while playing Castlevania.
>>
>>748907427
you can do both, you know
you can hook a computer up to a crt and emulate them
>>
>>748938334
You're right, Dracula's face takes up a third of the screen. But I'd rather look at sharp pixels than a blurry mess, distortion from a curved screen, and reflection off glass.
>>
>>748934837
What an ignorant statement. Scanlines aren't the only "effects" a CRT produces. The games were designed with the softness of the low resolution screens in mind and every game designed for that era uses blending techniques to make the final picture. The plethora of side scrollers also greatly benefited from the motion clarity of a CRT. No one would be crazy enough to put so much effort into making crt shaders if they weren't important to the game's experience
>>
>>748938441
A CRT TV is much harder to pull this off with though. A cheap composite converter won't give you the best image and anything worth buying after that is far outside of what most people would consider reasonable. A CRT monitor does make this much more straightforward but it comes with its own limitations like needing bfi to reach 240p60hz (which still looks great btw, it's just extra steps)
>>
>>748938687
This obsession with sharpness is so stupid. By your logic, all art you see should be stripped of any kind of blending and should only be solid colors that all stand out form each other and make a messy, blocky pile of squares.
>>
>>748938745
People spend thousands of dollars making retarded setups despite the fact the look of your room doesn’t impact the play experience at all, most people who played nes/snes/n64 games probably never saw a single scan line at all yet the larpers treat it as though it’s the single most important part
>>
>>748939095
Your opinion of the people in this hobby is irrelevant. The fact that you insult the technology itself is what i have a problem with. I don't think we should be paying what people are for CRT's and I say this because I didn't pay a premium. I got mine for less than what a standard monitor on amazon would cost.

And again, are you born yesterday or something? People who play nes/snes/n64 games NOW for any other reason than nostalgia are a minority. I am part of that minority, so I would know. Everyone and their mother saw these games on CRT's, it's just that rn people getting into it don't have that luxury waiting for them in their living room.
>>
>>748939094
Your obsession with release era accuracy is retarded. Devs don't design pixel graphics with bleed in mind, that's just a happy little accident. They draw concept art and then they draw it on graph paper and outline and color in the pixels.

>>748938153

>>
>>748939472
Adding comically thick scan lines to games that never had them in 99.99% of situations is nothing but larping, that’s just how it is, up the colour bleed and call it a day, that’s all you need to do
>>
>>748939531
They certain you did design with colour bleed in mind, composers from the era only ever heard the compressed version of the samples they would use since that was how it would be heard by everyone playing the game
>>
>>748939531
Well, there's no use reiterating what i've already told you.

You can enjoy the games without using a shader or a CRT. don't use one, actually. cuz it's clear you don't like them and that's fine. Enjoy the games how you wish to enjoy them but don't mock people who actually understand these games and the technology behind them on a deeper level.

We see these games as art and art should be preserved and seen as it was intended. If you don't, then we can just agree to disagree.

The standard NTSC signal require you to shift the timming a bit to draw all the 480 lines. if you don't, TV draws only half.
It don't look significantly darker because the lines are drawn twice as bright.
It makes the picture a bit sharper.
