Based.
I'm glad you're choosing Arch and not some derivative slop distro like Cachy, Mint, Pop or Bazzite. Real Linux users will be proud.

yay a linux thread
bros should I install bazzite or cachyos on my new PC I can't decide
on one hand I like how seemingly retard-proof bazzite is, but cachyOS seems objectively better in almost every way except for the fact you have to deal with arch linux fuckery
what do i do bros
>>
>>748910968
Just to catchy, Bazzite is really just for gaming is thats it where catchy is full desktop.
>>
>>748910968
I've used Cachy for a few years and one time i had an issue where i had to revert an update in the command line but that's literally the only time I've had trouble. So if that sounds like it would be a pain for you, then go with Bazzite, and if not, probably just go for Cachy

I really wish people would stop with the meme distros that only do one thing and realize that what people need is an actual operating system that actually updates on time. There's no reason to use anything other than cachy unless you're using some specific handheld device that works best with some specific interface.
>>
>>748910056
Wish I could afford a gaming PC...
>>
>>748911674
Most distros update on time, but that doesn't mean people want to jump on bleeding edge updates via an Arch-based distro that could end up breaking things and giving you a headache. That said, I think CachyOS is actually pretty stable all things considered, but I'm not sure I'd recommend an arch-based distro to just everybody.

it is pixel art but the vehicle physics are on point. I'd say the game is on the level of Wreckfest easily. Great game to play if you liked Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed. Compare Mint with Ubuntu and you will see what I mean. Ubuntu is a cancerous, buggy, bloated mess that forces snaps down your throat and updates are on the whims of a shitty company, hence it not being as cutting edge as Mint. Mint is basically the classic Ubuntu experience before they trooned out.
inb4 you say Debian, the only reason you would ever use that over Mint is if you are using a computer from the Clinton administration and don't care about newer stuff not working but there are better still way better small distros out there if that's your use case.
>>

Isn't that literally the #1 reason people recommend using Arch? Did the AUR really get fucked that hard over the recent malware ordeal?
>>

nah, the AUR debacle was a nothingburger in practice
but it's a valid wake up call
what happened is that a bunch of old packages that no one really used got hijacked
the way they handle package maintenance is that if the maintainer stops updating them then someone can automatically request to be the new maintainer
they've removed that retarded system now
>>
>>748913235
Anyone that uses a distro based on a distro based on a distro is dumb af. Configuring Debian to run modern software takes 2 repository additions and an update. That's it. You use a whole fucking distro to avoid copying and pasting 3 lines of text.

debian's best use is for anything other than your main computer that you want to keep on.
specifically slightly older debian thats proven to work stable, though its best to keep it off the web if you do that.

How's the steering wheel and accessories support these days? I was thinking of building a Linux sim rig and I really don't want to put Windows on it. Do you want to update manually or automatically?
CachyOS is overall better but updates are manual and require knowledge from your part if something goes wrong.
Bazzite is easier but still good, updates are done automatically and mostly painless. Although Bazzite is in no way fail proof.
I'd say go for CachyOS if you're mildly knowledgeable about computers. Fixes are easier than ever with LLMs.

Study the cachyOS hello utility, press every button
On Linux you don't just download random shit off the internet
The utility will teach you how to install software from the repo, that's your primary way to install things
You should also install bazaar from that repo, flatpaks are a secondary way
Then if you think something is trustworthy you can install it off the AUR, that's the tertiary way

>>

flatpaks have caught up but they still have problems. still, i use arch and most of my desktop programs are flatpaks.
>>
>>748936631
Yes
Not that you have a choice, you don't even have a distro software repo on SteamOS
Native repos are better because they use your native packages that get updated often while flatpaks are built around more solidified runtimes that stick around
>>
>>748936631
>>748936914
another downside of flatpaks is that most of the programs were NOT designed around them and lazily ported to the format so you have all sorts of weird edge case issues

its purpose is it's the copout answer to fags that don't want to do research on what they want. Wow, it's ubuntu(debian) but with less training wheels and guardrails and it's similar to windows
>>
>>748939340
Because it takes good parts of ubuntu and removes the bad parts (snap, gnome)

Ubuntu
But you're not read for that discussion.

who Linux users hate more
Windows users
or other distro users
>>
>>748945117
I hate other distro users that use shitty arguments like "never use derivatives". I also hate distro users who recommend things like Bazzite without properly warning the person what immutable distros are. Bazzite is fine but you need to know what you're getting yourself into.
I don't hate windows users. I pity them.
>>
>>748945117
Other distro users a cousins, and windows users are not worth attention. We hate Redhat.
>>
>>748945117
i sometimes have to deal with windows users at work (am a linux sysadmin). not only are they fucking dumb in general, but they don't have the slightest clue about the fucking operating system they're supposed to take care of. and that goes for each and every windows "admin" i've met thus far.
hence i hate windows users the most.

Neither. The only things I truly hate are gnome, red hat, and itoddlers.

i'm in a similar boat but I saw someone say like a year ago that the 1080ti was still performing about equal on linux, so maybe it's fine

nvidia works fine on cachy, they support it as first class

just use GE-Proton. it literally fixes everything

You can chase the popular distro forever or you can just customize what you're already using and optimize it for your own needs and hardware.
