I haven't played anything in a few weeks since I've just not really been in a gaming mood all that much, but overall I have played more games since getting it, yeah
I have no intentions of buying any others until this is dead. I don't get the point of collecting them

>>
>>748924428
true, and that's the reason I went with it
and yeah, as long as you know its shortcomings. it can play a ton of pc indies and lighter weight games, but the experience is still a lot more tinker and pray than "it just works" like a steam deck is. maybe one day steam on arm will get there, but right now it's somewhere between playing games on linux with wine in 2010 and proton now, not as painful as it used to be, but not as seamless as it currently is
it's pretty wild to be able to play switch and pc games on a device that fits in my pocket, though.

I've been thinking of getting one as a lighter weight steam deck, what are the best ones? I'd probably pick them all up since I'm indecisive.
>>
>>748922734
I was considering buying one but then I realized I wouldn't be carrying that shit around, so I decided to upgrade my phone, now using an snapdragon 8 elite device and it rapes everything. Add a cheap controller and you can game anywhere and go back to just use your fingers for tactile games like slay the spire. Pretty good
Temps are a thing tho

>>
>>748928897
if you mainly want to play pc games then go with the beefiest chip, and the best I know of is the odin 3 with the snapdragon 8 elite. afaik if you want better than that you'll have to get a tablet and controller. 8 gen 2 is still solid, and devices with that are more pocketable, but the extra raw power with the elite makes so many more pc games run basically flawlessly while you'll have concessions with an 8 gen 2

The ideal number of handhelds is either 1, 2 or 3, depending on your needs:

1. A medium-sized general purpose device, i like to think dual screen devices fit this slot best because clamshell lends itself to portability, and the second screen to versatility. ie; AYN Thor
2. A device optimized for home use; large and powerful, able to play demanding games with comfort, ie; Steamdeck
3. An around the town pocket device, small enough that you may actually forget that its in your pocket, cheap enough that you wont cry if you leave it somewhere or drop it. ie; Anbernic RG SP (or you could just use your phone)

It's not a good deal for the price, under performs, inferior screen and easily the worst stock (and custom Linux) OS on a chinkheld. And the only reason you know about it is because China paid people off on Tiktok to shill it, then it funneled through Plebbit and made its way here, the turd chute of the internet for retards like you to shill here in my chinese basket weaving thread.

Yeah seriously I've gone through so many handhelds over the years (dating back to the GP2X even) and this thing's the fucking best.
It should be though it's way more expensive than any other 4:3 handhelds I've bought.

I've played through Mega Man Network Transmission, and Wind Waker Randomizer in full on this thing, and am currently playing Link's Awakening DX HD. That shit's impressive, got a full Android version with loads of enhancements.
Being able to play that game with equipment on four face buttons and two shoulder buttons is amazing, I never have to re-equip the pegasus boots, the roc's feather, the power bracelet, etc.
>>
>>748930447
I think the main appeal beyond the form factor is the 120Hz OLED. Black frame insertion, integer upscale perfection and maybe a CRT filter.
>>
>>748922734
I love my Thor, I completed FF's 1 through 9 on it in the past 2 years

>>748929930
will it be able to play 3ds titles? it seems a bit underpowered for that, and DS just doesn't have a compelling library on its own imo
>>
>>748930537
Yes the screen is fucking beautiful.
I tried black frame insertion though, and I didn't really get the appeal. The screen looks amazingly smooth, but also considerably darker?

Also PSA for any Retroid Nova users, fix the oversaturated screen colors using this calibration app.

Nta but, the lower spec "Lite" version seems to be shit for 3DS according to testing, really stuttery with alot of games.
The higher spec "Lite Plus" version seems more promising, but nobody has one to prove it yet.
>>
>>748930732
Yeah BFI reduces peak brightness because it flashes a black frame every other frame. Makes 60Hz games look crazy smooth. I play in a pitch black room before bed so I doubt it would be darker than I typically enjoy while still having great color accuracy.

Originally wanted a Steam Deck, got a Nova instead.
>>
>>748930839
Yeah, I understand how it works, and I'm willing to give it another go sometime if I just max out the brightness whilst using it.
I just wasn't sure if there was maybe something I was missing with it.

Until recently I was playing a shitload of Super Metroid Map Rando on my RG34XXSP, but after extended use the buttons on that thing are badly worn out and stiff to use now.
I've done two Map Rando runs on this thing and it's way better.

I haven't gotten around to setting up shaders yet but I really want to try this one, especially for Mega Drive and PS1 titles (less so for SNES but will try it).

Also, it really is integer scaling perfecting. A 1280x960 display can perfectly scale a single 256x192 DS screen 5 times (for the rare game that doesn't need both screens at once).
>>
>>748930087
What's the name of the model? I've been wanting to pick up a handheld that can handle gamecube+ since I modded my 3ds a few years back but never got around to it. I know basically nothing about anything.
>>
>>748930616
The lite plus and duo can but it depends on drivers, firmware and software optimization at the end of the day.
>>
>>748931095
I typically prefer easymode halation, keeps the image bright
>>
>>748931224
Retroid Pocket Nova, but you'll be paying $239 for the 8GB model or $269 for the 12GB model.
It's my first Retroid device but it's perfect for GameCube, I've only trialled PS2 briefly it was playing Katamari Damacy full speed no sweat.

Also this shit can play Steam games using an app called GameNative, it's some serious wizardry.

Bump. I've been researching these for a while, even as someone who is very anti-temu, the more I look into these things, the less bad they seem, well, most of them at least. It's a bit annoying that they don't make it clear what games can run on these things but I understand the legal implications. So, I've been referring to retrocatalog.com but if you guys know a better site, please tell me. I'm gonna round up the ones mentioned in this thread and maybe purchase one.

I mean I could’ve just used the dogshit card it came with, I just wanted it to last forever

I actually did load it with games just to test it and it was the craziest card I have ever seen

Claimed to be 64gb—was 16, which barely fit the OS and left me with like 700mb somehow despite the OS being like 4gigs or some shit. Total bonkers, Windows would not even read the card I had to use a disk managing program to fuck with the format of the partitions, then format it with Rufus, somehow still had ghost partitions with like 200mb lost on it. Real Chinese shit. Didn’t even have a grade (A1 is a typical standard that works), no brand, just “64gb we promise, from China with love” lmao

Still great if all you need is up to PS1, just as any of those budget systems will be. All just a matter of taste at that budget since they're all similarly priced and similarly performant. I offer it up as a recommendation if you want the vertical/Gameboy style, but specifically want something slim and very portable, like you want those GB Pocket vibes. And it has access to a bunch of aftermarket operating systems, Knulli being the best of the bunch in my estimation.

I like it but it's an acquired taste.
If you're familiar with the damage numbers and progression from BN1 and BN2, it's overly similar to that but hamfisted into a 2D run and gun platformer.
It even has the virus busting ranking system, albeit invisible; it determines the item drops from defeated viruses.

Like BN1, upgrading your buster lets you manage most of the threats in the game, and then you need to prepare a few chips to handle some specific hurdles. Late game, chips that deal more than 100 damage become a hard requirement due to auras.

Early game, a lot of players get filtered by the first boss fight FireMan.exe, because his attack patterns are hard to avoid; you need perfectly timed slides under his flame cannon attack.
You're supposed to equip the Fire Armor that Roll gives you, and go back to Higsby's shop to buy Bubbler chips to help get through this first fight.

The game can be overly grindy too, battle chip drops are used to increase your maximum ammo capacity for each chip, and each chip has an MB value which is an MP gauge cost, so you can't just spam powerful chips.

Classic Mega Man staples are present here; there are straight up Mega Man 1 and 2 enemies in this game like Sniper Joe and Hammer Joe, and familiar hazards like Yoku Blocks and Quick Man's instant death beams.
Since the game doesn't use screen locks and transitions like the NES originals, those hazards are actually a lot harder to work with, but you can use chips like Double Jump and Invis to bypass them if you're struggling.

An FYI that this game has no 100% reward, even though you can work on getting a complete chip library and P.A. Memo.
It does have one secret boss fight, for which the requirement is collecting every Navi Chip (which at end game is pretty easy).
>>
First bought the Odin1, which seemed the best at the time.
Then bought the Odin2 when it came out, because it could finally actually run anything (which seemed like a total pipe dream before), with only the emulators themselves being a handicap now.
Then I bought the Thor, because I wanted to replay my 3DS collection at some point as well as the DS (my fav system) with much better screens. Otherwise it's the same as Odin2 but with AMOLED screens, although the standard Odin2 screen was already pretty great.
I am using my Thor every single day since I bought it at the end of last year. Cleared scores and scores of games this year, still keeping it, wanna clear my bucket list before I off myself. Practically don't play games any other way now except with my chinkheld in bed.
>>
>>748922734
Couple. Usually clamshells with dual screen'cause I wanted something that fits in a pocket and plays most shit that I actually want to play.

Got an Evercade recently, which technically isn't a chinkheld but might as well be, mostly just to try it out. Plus it actually has a good set up for verts. I can just slap roms on an SD card if I want something out of library.

do these get really hot though? Someome told me they get really hot and dont have great battery life yet
>>
>>748934641
Depends on the device.
Nova has dedicated thermals with fan speed controls, and default balanced performance can play GameCube games at 2x native res full speed.
Also I find the battery life to be excellent, it charges extremely quickly with the right charger, I swear mine goes from like 30% to 90% in maybe half an hour? Haven't timed it.
>>
>>748929617
This is the way. I have a Steam Deck, Ayn Odin 1, and Ayeneo Pocket Micro. To be fair I also use a 3DS and Vita for DS, 3DS, and Vita games.
>>
Cannot decide between an RP6 and a nova.

I really like that the nova actually fits in your pocket and the 4:3 is cool, but I hate that its Dpad up instead of stick up.

RP6 solves this but its bigger and heavier and glass fronts suck.

My priority is PS2/GC, but I might wanna revisit like skyrim and some 7th gen PC games.

Depends on the device and what you are playing. I own a cheap Action Helegaly and it does get hot with PS1 and Dreamcast. My Retroid Pocket doesn't get hot and lasts for 5-7 hours playing heavy 3d stuff and 10-13 for 2d games.
>>
>>748922734
R36S which I played a decent amount
RG35xxH which I kinda found less fun to use, idk maybe it was the Knuli thing I downloaded.
>>
>>748934641
Depends on what you buy. Some got good fans and thermals, some straight up do not have a fan or ventilation at all. If you're playing low tier emulation, stuff up to N64/PS1, you should generally never have much issues with them should they be able to handle it. The instant you start pushing into PS2/GC territory, the mid tier devices that can handle them will start getting a bit loud and warm, but if you're running big main stuff like Ayn and Retroid it shouldn't be a problem. You want good cooling you're paying more premium prices. If you're trying to get something cheaper for budgetary reasons, it is a conscious tradeoff to take note of.
This is the primary reason why most phones suck ass for emulation. My Moto Stylus G5 2023 5GZ whatever can totally handle most shit I throw at it like nobody's business thanks to a high end Snapdragon chip, so long as the emulator's good, but it drains battery and heats up like a motherfucker because there's absolutely zero intention for gaming and thermals on the thing.
>>
>>748934910
I did a full run of Wind Waker on the Nova and the stick being below the d-pad was not an issue for me.
I did replace the backplate though, they ship it with a flat backplate and pre-orders included a swappable grip backplate.
Separate to that, they sell a rubber grip, haven't got that.

That's what I liked about the RG34XXSP, the single screen clamshell form factor is a lot comfier.
The build quality suffers though, those buttons will wear out and you start pressing the buttons a lot harder to compensate.

Would be nice to see Retroid try a single screen clamshell, but I doubt it will happen.

RP6 and a defunct 28xx (or whatever it's called).
Had the RG GBA but shorted it like an idiot while closing it up after trying to fix Anbernic's shit-tier d-pad.
Outside of that, a DSi, a DS Lite, and a 2DS.
RP6 is my EDC all day every day, though I need to get another small form factor handheld at some point, but realistically it'd be smarter to have the DSI as my "small EDC".

For games, my go-to is Hello Kitty Island Adventure, but I've recently been getting into Minecraft sometimes (mostly just practicing console controls as opposed to M+KB, just in case I wanna play MC in public.) I used to play more PS2/Gc games until HKIA threw me off. I'm like 10 minutes away from beating the first dotHack game and can't be assed to pull the trigger.

Phones:
>limited to pre-PS2 systems because anything higher is bad for your thermals + battery
>VERY few phones have active cooling
>VERY few phones are designed for long-term high-temp gaming, and will throttle pretty quick
>eating up your phone's battery life is always a shit idea in general, especially with how people are stupid and buy thin phones with tiny-ass shit batteries
>touchscreen controls suck for most games
>shit ergonomics for your phone without a controller, and carrying one around sucks
>controller compatibility varies
>takes too long to pull out, connect to your phone, play, disconnect from your phone, then pocket
>all the good phone controllers are $100-200
>clipping your phone to an actual legit console controller is jank as hell
>few phones have headphone jacks
>dropping your phone sucks a lot more than dropping some cheap chinkheld
>no "right to repair"
>is constantly eating up RAM doing "phone things" in the background while you play
>most phones cost a lot more than most chinkhelds
>phones are more enticing to thieves

I've really been enjoying mine. Don't buy it for ps1 and up ( even though it can play some of those titles). I've been manly playing Gameboy Color, Advance and some snes titles on it and for those it's pretty great.
My only complaint is that it warms up a bit even playing Gameboy games after a while, but it's fine honestly.
Standby times are also pretty ok using a custom firmware
>>
>>748934910
The Nova is optimized for retro consoles, if the 4:3 display and d-pad prioritized control layout didn't give it away. If you're going to be playing modern games, or mostly analog stick controlled games and the layout bothers you, then go with the 6.
Personally, I'm not going to be playing anything past PS2/GC on mine, I love 4:3 and the Nova's form factor, and I prefer the layout, so the Nova is a dream handheld for me. Just depends on your use case.
>>
>>748925629
Buy it for NES, GB, GBC, or GG. Any other system is not worth it. As it is action games on its size and form factor are pretty hand-cramp worthy. The meat of my palm hurts trying to regularly use X and Y for example.

Retroid Pocket 5. That's it. No point getting another unless there's a huge performance bump so this is all I'll own. until one can play the entire PS3/360 library.
I got some stuff I dislike like the small buttons & sticks and I wish the screen was like an inch bigger but I feel like having a dedicated device for retro games makes me actually go through the catalog rather than using my PC. Couldn't explain why.

Hard to make a call. Full PC handhelds are so expensive, Deck or not, that it's hard to find people that even own one, let alone crazy enough to actually go out in public with them.
With SteamOS being more available to cheaper, smaller handhelds lately, the "Deck alternative" category will probably get blurred, as some of the higher-tier Android systems have straight-up better CPUs than what's in the Deck (worse GPUs though).
TL;DR: I dunno.

>>748924348
It varies for people. The biggest faction of "collectors" are the people that started with the early chinkhelds and went "ooh, piece of candy, ooh piece of candy" up the chinkheld family tree in realtime, changing handhelds every few months. Since most sub-$150 chinkhelds have no resale value, they just collect them to display... or something.
Some nutjobs just collect them to collect them though. It'd make sense if they were Youtubers since those guys get free chinkhelds like kids get candy on Halloween, but a lot aren't and it's just some weird addiction.
>>
>>748934910
Ultimately I don't like the RP5. I think it's about having skipped small widescreen handhelds like PSP and Switch, it's uncomfortable to hold over time and I can't get used to it. Anything tall feels great like the CubeXX, or bigger like the Deck I can handle just fine, but that shorter wider package format? Not great. The grip helped a lot, granted, but it's still not ideal. Thinking of selling it once I get a Nova, in retrospect maybe I should have went for the O2P.

>>748931462
No, but lots of people looking to scalp you over your brand loyalty over at etsy. That said, opening higher end chinkhelds can be tricky for their simplicity, not DS level but not babbys first service either.

rg-cubexx also with muos for older systems that fit better on square-ish aspect ratios + some lite shaders.

yesterday I purchased the rp6 after viewing reviews and guides, but I still have some questions /v/ros:

1. is the delivery time really that bad for retroid pocket devices? i live in yurope. i used the standard carrier (4px i think?) cause I heard they're better than dhl at avoiding import fees.

2. how is the sleep/standby on the rp6? is it janky like anbernic with custom OSs (i.e. really bad battery drain)?

3. when it comes to performance, does it make a difference whether ps2/psp games are stored in internal storage or sd cards? asking because I'm not fucking buying sd cards when they're 3-4x the price they were last year.

4. which frontend do you recommend? most people were recommending es-de or beacon. heard es-de is a bit sluggish when scrolling a large game catalog, is not fully open-source, and has a weird payment method via patreon. i want to scrap box art and customize themes, as well as boot straight into the frontend instead of the default android one.

5. any android settings I should set? saw some people recommending eq-ing the rp6 because the speakers are ass. any other tips in general?

6. how are we feeling about the rp duo (non lite)? will we finally be able to emulate an entire 3ds catalog with minimal touch screen latency?
>>

RP Nova is my endgame chinkheld for now. It crushes all emulation and ports I throw at it, and even plays some very light PC games well. Damn near the platonic ideal handheld except for some minor build quality issues (clacky d-pad, weird-feeling triggers) and no back buttons.

Next milestone would be x86-ARM translation maturing and ARM chips getting powerful enough to properly play modern PC games. Something with a 16:9 120hz VRR OLED screen would be good enough forever.

>With SteamOS being more available to cheaper, smaller handhelds lately, the "Deck alternative" category will probably get blurred, as some of the higher-tier Android systems have straight-up better CPUs than what's in the Deck (worse GPUs though).
This is nonsense, ARM is still crap at it and the moving pieces underneath were already available and in use in both Android and Linux with Rocknix and Armada.

>>748951412
>1. is the delivery time really that bad for retroid pocket devices?
Yes.
>2. how is the sleep/standby on the rp6?
It's decent, but you have to set it so it kills inactive apps to really get the most of it. This, of course, can have the side effect of killing a game you left open, so you can set exceptions. Odintools will also let you assign performance and fan modes to each app, so you can default to standard/no fan when not playing.
>3. when it comes to performance, does it make a difference whether ps2/psp games are stored in internal storage or sd cards?
No.
>and has a weird payment method via patreon.

>5. any android settings I should set?
First you have to disable the stupid overlay side strip on handheld settings. Also make sure to set Retroarch to periodically write Save RAM rather than only on formal RA exit. You might also want to root android unless you need some stupid native game that doesn't like that, you filthy gachafag.
>6. how are we feeling about the rp duo (non lite)? will we finally be able to emulate an entire 3ds catalog with minimal touch screen latency?

I can answer a few of those
>is the delivery time really that bad for retroid pocket devices? i live in yurope. i used the standard carrier (4px i think?) cause I heard they're better than dhl at avoiding import fees.
highly depends on which model and variant you ordered. but yes 4px especially takes longer to get here (US).
>when it comes to performance, does it make a difference whether ps2/psp games are stored in internal storage or sd cards? asking because I'm not fucking buying sd cards when they're 3-4x the price they were last year.
No.
>which frontend do you recommend? most people were recommending es-de or beacon. heard es-de is a bit sluggish when scrolling a large game catalog, is not fully open-source, and has a weird payment method via patreon. i want to scrap box art and customize themes, as well as boot straight into the frontend instead of the default android one.
most of it is personal preference. esde, beacon, retrohrai, cocoon. esde was fine for me and I had around 300 roms, no lag whatsoever. you can boot into any of these frontends if you make then your default launcher. before I sold my thor I was alternating between esde and retrohrai. both of these are pretty simple so I recommend them. stay away from iisu. shits a buggy and abhorrent mess.
>how are we feeling about the rp duo (non lite)? will we finally be able to emulate an entire 3ds catalog with minimal touch screen latency?
no, touch screen latency will still be an issue as far as i'm aware. but it should be able to emulate 3ds games pretty easily. even some basic switch games.

>is the delivery time really that bad for retroid pocket devices?
>i used the standard carrier (4px i think?) cause I heard they're better than dhl at avoiding import fees.
I snapped up my Nova pre-order the moment it went live. Showed up at my house a month and a half later. I did select DHL, and they shipped it through 4px instead. Supposedly they were going to auto-refund the difference to everyone, but I had to contact customer support to get that to happen. Also didn't come with the pre-order bonuses so they said they'd send those along, though I still haven't gotten them.

>when it comes to performance, does it make a difference whether ps2/psp games are stored in internal storage or sd cards?
It shouldn't, but if anything I'd figure the internal storage would be faster since I believe the RP6 uses UHS.

>4. which frontend do you recommend? most people were recommending es-de or beacon. heard es-de is a bit sluggish when scrolling a large game catalog, is not fully open-source, and has a weird payment method via patreon. i want to scrap box art and customize themes, as well as boot straight into the frontend instead of the default android one.
I love ES-DE, it's my go-to front end and I use an Emulation Station-based frontend/operating system whenever I can because it feels like a real video game interface, unlike others which mostly feel like cheap hackjobs. Anyway, I haven't built up a large enough rom collection to get it to feel sluggish even on my RP4 Pro, so I can't comment on if that happens on gigantic collections. I think you'll probably be fine though. Scraper works well, and setting it as your launcher makes it boot directly on startup. Also the payment is very simple. You pay for one $5/month subscription of their Patreon, download the APK and get the password, and can immediately cancel the Patreon subscription. They'll send all future updates to your email and you never have to pay again.

>6. how are we feeling about the rp duo (non lite)? will we finally be able to emulate an entire 3ds catalog with minimal touch screen latency?
Not on Android. If it gets GammaOS it'll probably be better, but it'll need a good Linux OS to really cut down, and it'll still never catch native hardware.

It's small and not comfortable to hold. The only reason why people think the GB form factor worked was because of nostalgia, but remember that we were all kids with small hands. As an adult, it's not comfortable to hold. Best to use a chinkheld with a PSP or GBA form factor. Also, the Trimui can get hot during extended play even when playing SNES.

You can, importing it has no issues. The reason why you can't have American-made systems like this is because they're made with the explicit purpose of piracy and usually ship with MicroSD cards of pirated games. If they were sold as-is with no pirated games they'd be run out of business immediately. Anything legal is typically something like the Evercade or FPGA that plays your retail games like the ModRetro or Analogue systems.

Then there's the fact that these are made with overstock or reject parts from things like vacuum cleaners, drones, smart TVs, smart fridges, etc. and replacement phone screens. Only the higher end stuff is made with custom screens. Even the higher end stuff are just buying Snapdragons to slap into their own housing.

Theoretically I guess they could be sold as Android-based gaming devices which has to be how stores like Best Buy can supply them but the point is that if marketed that way the market is going to be super niche and unsustainable.

Apart from that I have a Lenovo Legion Go S for PC games and more demanding emulation and I plan in the future on getting either the RP Duo or the Thor for something it between

Is there a reason to get any of these if I own a Steam Deck and if 3ds emulation itself kinda sucks still? If I get a used n3ds I am pretty sure it'll still run better than all chinkhelds, plus I can play NDS, GBA and retro crap on it as well

D-Pad on top + 4:3 on the Nova makes it optimized for retro games. And technically the PS2 has sticks on the bottom if we want to go there.

Steam Deck is one of the best couch handhelds, but it's not really portable.
There are chinkhelds you can throw in your backpack and literally forget about them. But then you need them and they are just there.

2. Can emulate PS2, 3ds, wii u, switch, ps3. Emphasis on ps2
3. Is under 300 usd

I just got a Retroid Pocket 6 and it is hard to believe how powerful such a small device is. With Game Native you can just run some light weight steam games through Proton instruction translation. It feels like magic.

Retro console emulators are trivial to run, but since the device is 16:9 the widescreen games look better.

Even at $400 the Steam deck is far too big and still way more expensive. At $800 the device is laughably stupid compared to something I can stick in a pocket.

If you can make a Steam Deck Mini in the form factor of a PS Vita and sell it for $250 then I would get one immediately. But that is basically what a Retroid Pocket 6 is. You can even install SteamOs on it now.

I have a RP2S, RP4Pro, and the RP5. Of these the only one I kind of regret is the RP5; the screen is nice (it's why I got it despite having the 4Pro) but it's not that big of a deal and I fucking hate the glass front. Somehow I find it less comfortable than the 4Pro, too. The RP6 can fuck off for continuing that path.

The Nova ditching the glass makes it tempting, but it's kind of hard for me to justify something that beefy for 4:3 games. Even for upscaling it's overpowered. It would be nice to definitively retire my RP2S, though.
>>
>>748923369

>>748961125
Ayn and Retroid (sister companies, same buttons), you're getting power anyway because they don't really do budget. Anbernic can do half-decent buttons sometimes but they're way too unreliable in QC, and generally bad at build quality. If you're feeling extravagant, Ayaneo does some stupid fancy shit at a premium.

Dolphin hase some issues for some reason and there are some problems with other emulators like Dreamcast and N64 there are no good emulators for android that dont have some stupid screen buttons
other than that its fine
PS2 and DS works well and its fun to play games in me bed
>>
>>748960887
>Why is the glass front a bad thing?
It makes applying screen protectors a hassle and can require extra babying (the glass used on even cheap phones tends to be hardier stuff these days), but if you're careful I suppose you don't need a screen protector and you're used to babying things anyway.

But the bigger issue to me is just that it feels less pleasant to handle. A smart phone is just a big screen. Handheld input revolves around buttons. It makes it easier to wipe down, but you can still get dust and grime wherever the plate is cut. I don't even think it really looks nicer. What does it matter if the bezel vanishes? Especially if you're playing content in varying aspect ratios? The RP5/6 does not feel or look anymore premium to me than the 4Pro and Nova or the Switch 1/2 and Steam Deck. It's not the biggest deal in the world but it's utterly pointless to me.

It's black space that borders the actual game. Your brain should be able to ignore it, same as it does the rest of the device that you're playing it on.
>>
>>748962270
And there we have it folks, the shill exposes himself.
>>
>>748962307
Because it feels like shit to play a game on a device where the functional screen is 10% of the surface area. Especially since that screen becomes pretty much microscopic if you aren't using an XL model.
>>
>>748962307
For most people it's a matter of maximizing screen output. Balanced pixels are also nice, especially if you're using shaders. It's why people like having 4:3 screens. The Nova actually looks better with integer scaling than the RP5/6, even ignoring the pillar boxing.
>>
>>748963109
My mistake, I missed the part where this is about emulating on a 3DS. I agree, it's not great due to the scaling or tiny pixel perfect option. GBA seemed acceptable the few times I tried it, though.

Still stand by black bars not being a problem in most other scenarios.

I honestly doesn't matter with OLED. Black borders are black and don't get in the way if you have the wrong aspect ratio. Stuff like PS2 emu has widescreen patches, which make wider screens more comfortable to use than the original console.
I would much rather it be a foldable to reduce the size than some gimmicky aspect ratio fix.

Fact that almost never gets talked about in these shill threads is that these things are made out of chinesium and break very fast.
The joysticks&buttons are always crap, deadzones, get stuck, break off, etc...
You have a screen lottery where the reviews get the good one and everybody else gets crap.
The software is always complete ass.
And most people who buy this shit play a couple of games out of nostalgia and then let it collect dust and spend more time on threads like this talking about how great these shit chink handhelds are then actually playing on them.

Retroid/AYN stuff is pretty solid in terms of materials. Where these companies--including Retroid--tend to fall flat is in fit and finish. They spam out so many models in such a short span of time that they just don't do enough testing on them, and it's not until the second or third production batch (if ever) that things get resolved. They're operating on a smartphone model with a fraction of the resources and audience. They've mostly gotten better, but you still end up with shit like terrible screen calibration.

My phone was expensive as shit and it doesn't even have a SD card reader. I don't want to fill its space with fucking games when I already need it for images, videos and other stuff. I also don't want to fuck my battery even further.

A small extra device isn't too expensive, has dedicated buttons and It's not the end of the world if it breaks or if I lose it. I also can give it to my friends or nephews to play for a bit. Can't do that with my phone with all the stuff that's on there. I hope that clears it up

>>748950116
Shaders have been great for a long time now but you generally need to adjust parameters to your liking and it can be a little overwhelming at first with how many options there are.
Personally, I can't even play retro stuff on modern high resolution displays without them though. The "chunky pixels" shit some people seem to love is just so far removed from what I grew up playing or what the developers intended.
(Actually a really nice feature many front ends and stuff have now is being able to save shaders to different emulators and games, so you can pair games that used different tricks around different input methods with shaders that will mimic them, since no one input method or shader will cover all of them. (Though people always seem to mysteriously leave that out of "CRT amazing how it supposed to look" videos))

Ive considered getting one but I dont think theres anyrhing that has the ability to play everything I want or all the features I want. So if anyone's got a recommendation for something that can

>can dock like a switch & connect to a tv
>decent ergonomics
>expandable storage

>>748971549
I don't know what's the bar for gacha, faggot, but Odin 3 should probably be enough. Vita emulation is sloppy in general. VIdeo output is a given on mid to high end, as well as storage expansion on everything.

>>748971619
Gamehub Lite has been stripped clean, or Bannerhub is supposed to be a fork continuing from it, but I can't vouch myself.
>>
>>748970539
So do most indies run well at full resolution on it? Like say... Blasphemous 2, Alabaster Dawn, Esoteric Ebb, and Necesse?
What about stuff like Dead as Disco, Mewgenics, or Octopath Traveler II?
>>
>>748971549
IIRC Vita emulation has been sluggish so I'm not sure if you'll get the ideal experience even on a high end device. And if you're going to play gacha, a lot of these devices don't pass the Google Play services shit so you're SOL unless the game isn't strict on sideloading APKs. Odin 3 is closest to what you're looking for or maybe Retroid Pocket 6.

The last one I bought was an anbernic RG556 a couple years ago. While it can do most GameCube/PS2 it does push it to limits so I usually don't play those on it. It's just underpowered. But still was a great handheld since it's very comfy to hold and has a good OLED screen, think I paid $180 for it on launch.
I was thinking about buying something bigger like an Odin Portal but then the trump tariffs scared me out of it since I heard of people getting separate tariff bills that cost as much as fhe handheld. Today I haven't kept up with chink handhelds like I used to so don't know what is good for $200 range (id consider $330 at most if it was really worth it).

gamehub and gamenative are the most robust ways. gamenative is quite good in my experience, but you often have to go to the site and download someone else's config file for your device and the game you're trying to play. there's also armada which is a (partially vibe coded) steamos like custom os you can install. that eliminates the tinkering, although comparability still isn't as good as on a steam deck of course. then recently droiddeck released, and it's an android app that creates a virtual linux environment and runs arm steam, giving you most of the benefits of armada while not exposing your device to potentially fucky vibe coded code (pic related, some guy's odin exploded while charging it in armada. might not be armada's fault but I'd rather not take any chances). the downside is it's brand new so you won't get as good of performance as you currently will with gamenative, but it doesn't require as much tinkering and it will obviously continue to get better.

>>
>>748999740
A 3DS has to have the system flashed with a mod, so many little quirks and annoying things per app, limitations even in running DS games digitally, I think a 2TB limit on microSD cards if I remember right, and various ports and homebrew made specifically for it to even hope to get shit working. A lot of work for a solid device but a chunky bitch to deal with. Point of a chinkheld's appeal is that you can just download Android emulators and get right to town with virtually none of the complications, just the configuring. Though I have zero idea how the Pocket Duo holds up compared to the AYN Thor, or if it fixes the screen sync latency issues that the Thor had for 3/DS games. Frankly, you buy one of these to play EVERYTHING you can emulate, you buy a 3DS to play 3DS/DS games and maybe emulate shit as a novelty on there.

Another UMPC. ARM is more unreliable than usual for those.

R36S, does it have wifi? And I tried connecting via usb cable and it didn't work. Maybe I'm just retarded?
>>
>>749011150
I don't think it does. Not familiar with R36S, you may have to enable some USB file transfer option on ES or something. At the very least I'd expect that to be on ArkOS or dArkOS guaranteed, but then trying to identify which hardware you have is a nightmare so probably stick with whatever firmware you got.

I'm in the market for a new cheap chinkheld, mostly to just play pokemon rom hacks. The R36S is good for its price but the D-pad digs into my fingers after a while because the edges arent smoothed out. Do you know a decent cheap model that connects to wifi? Just to play GBA and maybe DS games, I have a hacked 3DS for everything else

34xx would serve you well, it's made for GBA with integer scaling and such (plus overclocks to 120hz), but the d-pad is tiny and some people have a hard time with it, I ended up liking it after a little tape to remedy fake diagonals. Look for the "new" model, apparently they tweaked the panels to use the better temperature and brightness of the RGSP's.

And then there's the RGSP if you're into the SP, functionally the same machine, but they're all painted and the paint scratches even easier than the 35xxSP's, plus the buttons are membrane on domeswitches rather than just membrane and there's a worry from the older models both might end up physically pierced over time and sink through the shell.

There's also the RGDS+, and while that's relatively a bit overpriced it'd serve you well for DS with integer scaling, but some people are getting bottom screens with lightbleed so probably want to wait it out. It's also quite big.

You could also spend more and just get something that's able to run all the RPGMaker fan game shit, but I don't know what's the best value there. I wouldn't spend less than $150 for a decent experience though, I've witnessed RPGMaker MZ(?) bring my passive cooling $120 quasi-PS2 tier chinkheld to its knees.

sharp-shimmerless and crt-gdv-mini-ultra. Picture doesn't really do it justice.

I will buy the Nova

34xxsp, trimui brick, pretty much any anbernig handheld from the past 2 years will be great for pokemon. Ignore retroid shills with their overpowered and expensive devices. You don't need a snapdragon gen 3 to play pokemon.
>>
>>749013946
You do at least need a fan if you're suffering RPGMaker. No reason to bother with the 34xxSP as the sticks are fucking retarded, the extra gig of RAM is long gone and the panel got tweaked on the RGSP so it wouldn't be oversaturated.

I see plenty of handhelds Ive never heard but how do they compare with a Steam Deck in terms of power? Can any of these run Skyrim?
>>
>>749014054
He said pokemon romhacks and maybe DS. RPGmaker is an entirely different beast.
>>
>>749014117
Skyrim is already too old for marriage in some Muslim countries, anon. Yeah, they can run it.

I liked the blue mats that materialize out of the ether.

The $200 something stuff is in a weird spot where they can run some high profiles games, but poorly and stuttery, plus stability isn't great. The big mistake is assuming it's a linear experience where because todd's game is running, you won't get cockblocked or experience horrible framerates and stutters on a mid 2000s game. Additionally, you kinda rely on internal storage for decent results and that fills up super fast as you populate a chinkheld. Performance wise, in the words of the RPCS3 dev focusing on ARM, SD8Gen2 chinkhelds are 'half a Deck'.

RPGMaker is the foundation of most Pokemon fangames now as I understand it. I did try running the fusion one once a while ago, only to wait a whole 5 minutes to boot and get like 10fps on a RK3566.
>>
>>749014408
Are you sure? A lot of the pokemon romhacks shilled are just custom ROMs.

>>749014408
I'll ask a more important question, are any of these good if I don't want to emulate anything?
>>
>>749014494
I'm not huge into Pokemon, but yeah, that's what I get from all the Joiplay tutorials I see. More palatable to youtube than eroge, I suppose.

>>749014523
Meaning what?
>>
>>749014610
I don't want to install roms nor anything like that I want Steam OS and play my Steam library only
>>
>>749014523
I got the Odin 3 literally this week, so I'm biased because it's brand new, but I also basically only play PC games and that's what I've been up to so far.
The biggest advantage and limitation is that it's fairly small, so it's really comfy for grabbing, playing for a bit and putting it away. The downside is that you probably won't enjoy playing a CRPG on it because the text gets pretty small.
it definitely takes some dicking around to get stuff to work. AI helps a lot.

It's pretty neat if you've been collecting the free Steam/GOG/Epic/Amazon games, because the launcher lets you log into all four.
Again, just don't go into this expecting everything to work out of the box.

Like I said, compatibility is very, VERY spotty. SteamOS isn't officially supported on these yet, and once/if it is, it functionally won't be much different at all from existing solutions like Rocknix (Linux) that have been using all the same software to run PC games. Do look up compatible devices before buying though, the ones with SD8Gen2 are safe bets, this is a weaker one.

Also, you're gonna have your fan on full blast at all times. And I can't stress this enough, these videos paint a much better perception of compatibility and seldom show stutters, keep that in mind.
>>
>>749014869
I'm running stuff through GameNative and I agree that compatibility is spotty at best. Generally, more niche, older stuff runs worse than more mainstream and newer stuff. If you have an AI subscription, putting it into reasoning mode can actually get a bunch of games to run that don't otherwise. Even better is connecting it via USB in debugging mode and letting Codex figure out what is going on.
Some stuff runs but with quirks. For example, Epic's version of Hogwarts Legacy is has the cloud sync mapped to the wrong folder, so it downloads saves from the cloud but doesn't use them.
I wouldn't buy it if you have a very specific game you want to play on it, but more as a secondary device. It will play some games really well, and others will not work at all until you change some kind of esoteric setting.

Build quality is good based on duo lite impressions

I'm glad the dpad is on top. Asymfags are weird.

how much do you give a shit about DS and 3DS games?
