Is the original Woolsey translation actually better, or is that just a meme because of a few quirky lines?
>>
How many people do you think have played and compared multiple translations of the game in order to be well-informed on this topic?
>>
It was just better than a lot of other shitty translations that were getting released, especially relative to the game's size
>>
>>748933624
I mean if you want the FF6 that left its legacy on gaming you need the Woolsey translation. That's history and the proto subculture around JRPGs in the west. Whatever other translation you get is not going to make up for missing that. So in terms of FF6 it will always be the gold standard to actually understand the impact of FF6.
>>
>>748933624
It feels weird playing retranslations. The Woolseyisms feel inseparable from it.
>>
>>748933903
Why though? What makes it better than the new translation used in both the GBA version and Pixel Remaster?
>>
It's better than Lufia's translation at least.

I don't think it's a matter of A/B testing whether FF6 would have had its impact without it more than just being the most accurate way to understand the impact the game had in JRPG subculture throughout the 90s. Other translations being more literally accurate are going to counterintuitively become less accurate to capturing the experience of the game in the west because the Woolseyisms are part of it. Like going directly to a primary source for a phenomenon.

Just like they did the same for the OP post, right? I don't care about what translation left a legacy. People often say the Woolsey translation is better, and I want to know why that is.

And by the way, that response still essentially implies that it's better, even if not objectively so.

Yes. Absolutely. Don't let these contrarian faggots and turboweeb Ken-sama wannabes tell you otherwise.

If hearing English spoken in your day-to-day doesn't cause you physical anguish and make you wish you could switch your mortal existence to the Japanese dub, you are better off with Woolsey's localized version of FF3/6. I can't emphasize this enough. It is a classic for good reason.

>>748935957
I don't believe that's the case at all. I don't think people will replay a 50 hour RPG in order to compare the damn translations.

I think a handful of people *might* have played the game multiple times in different versions after over a decade, but I don't believe there's anyone around who actually knows the particular translation differences enough to actually critique them beyond 'general vibe' regardless of what retards in this thread may be posting.
>>
>>748936358
Basically what that means is, that you had people that were trying their best to cater to (You) and your cultural frame of reference, and the ways they chose to do that were clearly very effective, given the enduring legacy of the dialog and "charm" of this game. That is why it's soulful. It was a product of its time done with effort and care with our maximum enjoyment as the goal. There are people that think that's a bad thing even when done competently, and there are people who don't. Either way, it is certainly soulful

I think the Woolsey characters have more personality, because of their word choices, passion and punchy dialogue. It also increases the cultural depth of the setting. The references I could take or leave, but they don't break my immersion and to a certain degree I enjoy their idiosyncrasy. They definitely don't bother me like some people.

However the definitive dealbreaker for me is that I love 90's cool Woolsey-Terra, while corrected Tina is only a little likable eventually and I can easily understand why people's reaction after hearing praise is that she's not all that and is unremarkable.

Maybe not "better" but one thing Woosly does a good job with is giving each character a unique voice, which I appreciated. For example, Terra tends to pause when speaking and has this almost autistic manner of speaking which I think fits her personality. He goes too far in a few places, like Cyan's dialog, which is really cringe IMO.
I recently used the "Ted Woolsey Uncensored" patch and would recommend that over the "original" FF3 snes translation.

If you want a direct comparison between translations, here you go. You should be able to feel out what you like best.

I always felt it was more authentic for it to not name it directly and using euphemisms. It's realistic and more gentle for a person to evade it. It's still clear by action what's been talked about.
>>
>>748933624
its not like the game becomes that much better if you play the woolsey translation, and depending on taste you might find the liberties taken unnecessary and hackneyed.
>>
>>748945510

Are you a boomer that played the SNES one? You will always defend the Woolsey one.

Are you not retarded? You would use the pixel remaster translation since it's more faithful.

The entire question is if you want accuracy or creative liberties. If you're fine with lots of creative liberties then you go the original Woolsey translation, if you want the actual translation you use retranslations be it fan ones or the Pixel Remaster ones. Woolsey would generally make up jokes out of nowhere or reference pop culture that didn't exist in the original, and from what I remember just made up enemy names and equipment names that weren't close to the Japanese version. Epee vs. Bastard Sword is an example but you can chalk that up to not wanting to use a swear in a children's game. On the opposite end he also made characters have more defined quirks in their dialogue which is why a lot of people tend to like his stuff.

Keep in mind that the retranslations also aren't always better than the original, FF7's is just one example. Seeing the Shinra Corporation/Conglomerate called "Shin-ra Kumijo" made me flash back to TV-Nihon subs.

>>748947537

I'll pipe in to say
Real translation REQUIRES at least some creative rewriting.
A person who can actually translate, needs to be able to understand how the languages AND PEOPLE, communicate in that language.
Your left:right examples are mostly a good fit to show it.
Left is practically a "competent" direct translation. It's mostly garbage for a native english speaker.
Right is a competent actual translation.

I'll take Chinese as perhaps the most easy cross-transliteration example possible.
Granted, I'm making this up based on what I know of chinese and english FOR EXAMPLE not claiming my exact words are an exact fact.
A chinese phrase might directly character-by-character translate as "Horse river knight tree castle"
The correct English translation might be "A poor merchant's son traveled the path of the warrior and saved the people" (or to put it broadly - "The Hero's Tale")
>>
>>748949107
>Real translation REQUIRES at least some creative rewriting.
Oh yeah for sure, otherwise it's just super dry. I don't mean direct translations shouldn't at least try to work in specific character quirks (Usually they repurpose how a character is using honorifics to justify that unless the story mandates the honorifics be kept in) or to add some sort of "voice" that's not so dry even if it means changing some wording or something. It's more that Woolsey's way of doing it is just straight up him inserting his own made up lines. Kid Icarus is probably one of the best examples of this as it's fairly dry in the JP version and most of the English dialogue is embellished to make them work better.
>>
The scripts are comparable, I think I enjoy how Woolsey wrote dialog better while not enjoying the parts of the actual story he changed or got wrong. Definitely like the names for spells and items better in Woolsey's translation, always preferred stuff like cure1 and fire2 over curagaragaga. Also I prefer the names he localized, without him we'd have gotten Tina and Mash
>>
>>748933624
Jesus christ, was making Terra sprite so sexy really necessary?
>>
>>748933624
Hmm I played the GBA version only. Is that a "woolsey" translation? I remember son of a submariner.
>>
>>748933624
genuinely the only thing that you can notice in later translations is things that used to be limited to 5 characters or whatever being more free to use more
>>
>>748933624
Played FF6 in JP for the first time a few months ago
The Woolsey translation features
-Making shit up instead of translating
-Honest mistakes
-Random pop culture references
Overall its shit but still better than Alexander O. Smith or Koji Fox
>>
>>748949552
Her huge boobs and huge ass separated by a single pixel wide waist make her seem otherworldly, abnormal and exotic, fitting her heritage. Also her sexiness makes her more striking and cool, justifying her protagonist role. Even further she's sexy, so she's appealing, alluring and brings in sales, which is her number one task.

So, yes, from all angles it was necessary. Yet Terra is not and will never be for sexual.
>>
>>748933624
Ted Woolsey Uncensored Edition is definitive. But between SNES and GBA, the SNES version is ultimately better because it reads more human. The GBA version is a bit more nerdy and verbose.
