I feel like there should've been way more games with BN's gameplay. All I know is that one touhou game and that's it. It's a shame
>>
>>748934581
I remember renting one of these for the gameboy as a kid. I got filtered on a puzzle I think and never finished it. Gameplay was fun. Are these games worth playing as an adult?
>>
>>748934889
Yeah.
>>
There's one BN clone on steam with a future release date. I can't look at my wishlist right now but I'm sure there will be threads about it whenever it releases. Almost certainly not in the next 2 months though.
>>
I feel like you need to come up with a way to evolve it and do something more with it, make it feel less stiff etc.
>>
>>748934889
Stories are kinda childish (aimed at a 10-12 year old target demographic), but the gameplay is straight fire. Worth playing.
>>
There are a few that roughly ape it but because of the monkey's paw they're all roguelikes.
>>
>>748934581
You need more than the gameplay to really tie it together.
See: OSFE
>>
>that one touhou game
Shanghai:EXE: Genso Network and to this day it's probably the best one. Which is fitting because Touhou fangames always end up being some of the best fangames made for any series for some reason
>>
>>748934581
one step from eden and the sequel are all I know. Weirdly enough, not even Capcom is doing it. You'd think they'd keep milking it since it's relatively low effort and sold well enough, but they just let it die for some reason.
>>
>>748934889
They are awesome.

This one seems solid enough.
>>
>>748934581
There are, and they are all mediocre at best. Without the overworld exploration to serve as a break between battles, it becomes tiring quickly, and that is something none of the copycats understand.
>>
>>748939973
This.
Also the navicust and its effects add a lot to the game, but that's literally patented so no one can use it.
>>
>>748939949
That looks slow as fuck

>>748934581
like making it more action oriented like TV Tome Adventure?

I wanted to make one but depression stopped me halfway through.

Still a good game, but not the BN spiritual successor I thought it was
>>
>>748934889
Battle system is fantastic and a ton of fun, but the games are bogged down by pretty much everything else. Hope you like padding and backtracking and backtracking and padding.

>>748945931
atleast it has kanna and her melons
>>
>>748945931
I don't understand why people keep bringing up this game in BN threads. CnC is anything but an MMBN clone. It's a fucking Slay the Spire clone at its core, just shoved onto a 3x3 grid. You can't even customize your deck on the fly or move freely in combat, and the card effects bloated into Yugioh tier paragraph complexity that require at least 30 hours of play just to memorize how everything functions. BN's combat format is literally nothing like that. Then again, calling CnC a StS clone pisses off the StS autists for whatever reason. They refuse to accept this weeb shit shares the exact same core mechanical loop, except it does do better and has way more depth.

Indie fags just copy the battles and never the actual interesting part which was the RPG elements, no slapping roguelite garbage onto it doesn't count. Exploring the world and having a story with characters you gave a shit about was the important part.
>>
>>748951576
It's not just about the rpg elements, indie games usually lack of creative encounter design that actually forces you to adapt. MMBN excelled because its bosses had unique, distinct gimmicks. Look at BubbleMan, DrillMan, or DesertMan. They disrupted the grid forced you to completely rethink your positioning and demanded specific deck synergy if you were actually aiming for an S rank with whatever chips you had. That's what genuine mechanical depth looks like.

That's precisely where a game like One Step From Eden falls flat. Its boss design might be fine by raw action standards but at its core it just devolves into a twitch-reflex dodge fest and pattern memorization test. It never encourages you to build a deck tailored to exploit a specific boss's mechanics or elemental weakness. And even if you wanted to, the inherent randomness of its roguelike structure makes building a tight specialized counter-deck almost impossible on any given run.

One Step from Eden and Duelists of Eden
You're welcome
>>
>>748955683
Kang should've made an actual Battle Network-style RPG instead of a PvP version.
>>
>>748955965
I agree. Duelists of Eden also really should've just been an update to One Step from Eden. Still both really solid games though.
>>
>>748955683
>not round based
>deck building is just thinning your deck out as much as possible for a singular powerful combo
no, if a game isn't round based where you select cards/chips before the next round starts then it's not bn
>>
>>748956107
Eh, agree to disagree. It's the only good BN style game I've played, it doesn't have to be identical in every way.
>>
>>748956062
tobyfair osfe was coded in a way that didnt allow true online multiplayer
>>
I've been playing that vibe coded rougelike mod for the last couple days nonstop. It's fulfilling an itch I didn't know I had. I bought the collection but didn't really feel like playing through the games for a third time.
>>
>>748952052
What made the BN games exciting for me was the heavier emphasis on story, the deck building was alright, but as a kid I just stuck whatever seemed cool in the deck.
>>
There's One Step from Eden but the rest of the game doesn't feed into that kind of game (it's just a rougelite).
>>
>>748956869
>I've been playing that vibe coded rougelike mod
look cool, that github page is insufferable to read through though

JRPGs with legitimate fun and skill based gameplay are forever going to be a niche, because the audience just wants number go up.

Battle Network isn't very good though. Crapcom themselves hit the upper limits of what the battle system can do early in each game. The moment you start seeing auras appear, that's the exact moment you're playing a shitty game.
Crapcom had this boner for aura/absolute defense a lot in the 2000s for some damn reason, probably because they kept making shallow-ass game systems that couldn't last for a full-length game and needed a bandaid.

Radiant Historia kinda had this type of grid system although I don't think you could move during that game, only set positions before the fight. Also Unicorn Overlord but you don't really fight in that one
