Why don’t games do this kino anymore?
>>
>>748935352
Because every sequel takes like 10 years to release now
>>
>>748935352
you can count the numbers of series that let you import more than starter buffs on your hands
>>
Games take so long to make nowadays that the sequel comes on the next generation.
>>
>>748935352
Why would I still have save data from 10 years ago?
>>
>>748936049
You don't keep 100 GB of old save files for all the games you played?
lmao.
>>
>>748935352
Nobody plays old games before new ones.
I've seen retards that start with Death Stranding 2 and ask me if they should play the first one.
>>
>import data
>all the "massive choices" you made end up as flavor text for the next games
>>
>>748935352
My game will.
>>
>>748935352
Because Mass Effect 3 is the perfect starting place for people new to the series!

I still have my mass effect 2 save from when the game was new that I never imported to ME3 because I saw how bad everyone said it was

Trails in the Sky 2nd released two weeks ago and does this.
It checks which sidequests you've done in the previous game (1st Chapter) and the characters will comment on it, and you also get bonuses for transferring your completed save data over.

Other Trails games do this even more extensively, like the ones with romance mechanics checking which girl you chose in the previous game and adjusting scenes accordingly.

Games used to receive sequels within 2-3 years, meaning you got to play them on the same console/pc. Now they take 10 years.
>>
>>748936420
ffxvi did this
>>
>you need a save data of the first game to unlock certain extra events on the sequel
>>
>>748935352
It was annoying for devs to do this with their games in the past, but that's no excuse, it was a good feature that people liked.

The reason this isn't done anymore is because it was mostly a thing for computer rpgs and a couple console jrpgs (Suikoden series). These days there are very few good rpgs coming out at all. What are you going to do, import your save from Veilguard to..oh right, that game was hot garbage and isn't going to get a sequel thankfully. Maybe you'll import your Mass Effect Andromeda save to..oh right that game was hot garbage, etc etc.
>>
>>748935352
because it deters new people coming in.
>>
>>748936693
Should I play this or the original game?
>>
>>748935352
It alienates new customers because they'll think "oh I guess I need to play the first game before I buy this game, I'll buy something else then!"
and that's a big no-no in today's money grubbing industry where games regularly cost half a billion fucking dollars to make now for some god fucking unknown reason
>>
I loved it until Mass Effect 3
Best use case was Oracle of Ages/Seasons on the gbc
>>
remember being excited for me3?
>>
>>748936420
Golden Sun (the GBA ones) also did it
>>
Mass Effect 3's endings weren't great but I think the reaction to it was dumb. It was a great trilogy that reacted to your choices throughout and the stupid colors don't diminish that. If you play a video game just to say you finished it maybe you won't get it.
>>
>>748935352
because no one can code anymore

ai cannot look through 2 separate codebases and come up with with something
>>
>>748935352
Most games don't include meaningful enough choices in their design anymore. Developers are afraid of moral dilemmas so everything's just a linear story now with the safest of narratives.
>>
>>748936049
yeah, I still have save data from 15 year ago
steam cloud baby
>>
>>748935352
Mass Effect 3 was severely fucked by the fact that the devs/writers had to work around people being able to import saves from Mass Effect 2. Because it was theoretically possible for *every* character from that game to die, they had to rest the plot largely on the shoulders of characters not involved in ME2 (Liara, the Virmire Survivor, and Vega). It meant that for the most part, all the characters people loved from ME2 were sidelined to shorter sidequest content except for Garrus and Tali (who were the most popular female and male romance options from ME2 respectively). Miranda, the poster girl of ME2, is barely even *in* ME3. Literally 15 minutes of screentime.

All in all, it must have been an extroardinary headache for the devs trying to make everything work, especially given the relatively short window they had to work with, while the company was actively working on Dragon Age and their Star Wars MMO at the same time. I can understand why games don't do this anymore.

Armored Core Last Raven
>>
>>748935352
For one, you'd need player choice in the first game. Secondly, the sequel would need to hinge on what happened in the previous. Personally, the shit is too gimmicky for me to care about. I think it like Kotor 2's simple approach to it. Some simple dialog/situational changes in your playthroughs. Nothing that is really all that meaningful and doesn't need to be. With something like Mass Effect, it was supposed to be that overarching story with big impact on previous choices, and it failed.

tl;dr it's fine for some flavor changes in your new story, but never works out for a big story split among several games.

The Quest for Glory games did this and it was so gaddamn sick. Idk how widely known it is but if you have a Breath of the Wild save on your Switch it automatically transfers all your horses to Tears of the Kingdom.

Infamous
Dead Island
Mass Effect
Dragon Age
Telltale Games (specifically TWD but a lot of them have this feature)
Baldur's Gate (the Bioware ones)
>>
because all you faggots cried about it after mass effect 3
its the same reason why ac games went to shit or batman you faggots cried nonstop to the point of the devs needing to apologize and fix it and then they never tried anything as ambitious ever again
I still remember total ass cancer crying about batman . well guess what faggot you sure made those games way better now

>It was a great trilogy that reacted to your choices throughout and the stupid colors don't diminish that.
I think they do diminish it, to a certain extent. I'm really fucking old, I was 12 when Mass Effect came out (it was my first ever 360 game) and 16 when Mass Effect 3 came out. I was so excited to play the ME3, I had pulled all-nighters playing ME2, and the RGB ending, followed by the fuckass EA "buy more DLC!" message, it left a permanent sour taste in my mouth. When I came back to it years later and picked up the Citadel, Leviathan, and Javik DLCs, it just made me even more annoyed, because all of these things should have been included to begin with.

I still love Mass Effect and the whole universe and setting, but everything after Marauder Shields is just an insane letdown that will always taint the trilogy for me.

>dev does something poorly
>hope you're happy, now you don't get it at all!

That's now how shit works, fuck face. People are entitled to complain about poor quality. If you're going to do something, do it right.

>>748935537
Yakuza games from 0 all the way to 5 (or 6?) Give youba little gift for having a previous save game on your console. Stopped when that faggot took over the series, I can't even say his name...

Yeah KOTOR 2 did it best.
>>
>>748938546
Let's be honest, the pink haired Bioware developer was never actually developing games, at best they were just proofreading scripts
>inb4 someone posts the non-binary writer who made Veilguard
One upon a time he was a normal writer who wrote for Mass Effect and Dragon Age, he went crazy sometime in the late 2010s after he was already well-established and all the other experienced writers had left

Witcher 2 starting you with several rare swords if you did the quests for them in the first game was kino. They were obviously not game breaking but were fun to have.

As much as I enjoyed XCOM 2 having the balls to say that the bad ending in the previous game was canon I always thought it would have been nice if you could give the sequel a completed save file from the first game and it could import a few soldiers to mix into the pool of possible recruits, complete with some matching flavor text about how they survived the original xcom project's failure and survived afterwards.

Because it was a complete failure. It cost immense resources to cater to but no one actually cared about it.
The worst for this has to be Dragon Age Inquisition, where they built some shitty old website for save importing that only lasted one game and that will one day be killed by EA, leaving it with no save import functionality and completely breaking continuity in the series.

Back in the day, they had CROSS COMPANY imports. Goddam The Bard’s Tale allowed for imports from Wizardry 1-3, Ultima 3, and MM1. back when EA was making some legends.
