Are there ANY mmos worth playing in 2026, or is the genre just dead?
>>
The genre peaked with WoW vanilla/tbc and then every other MMO tried to copy it and failed and died.
>>
i think it's a product of the times thing.
it's like how 15 years ago you could actually make new friends in video games, but now everyone is just in their own discord.
culture has evolved and the type of games that are capable of success are different.
it's not that it's impossible to make a good MMO today, it's just that the zeitgeist is materially different.

Genre died around the early 10s when everyone started introducing microtransactions and lootbox bullshit into fucking everything. It turned an already addictive-but-manageable genre into straight-up gambling.

my favorite is eso sadly the inventory bloat makes the game basically unplayable unless you pay 15 a month for craft bag and extra storage
by far the best because it focuses on story and voice actors performance lore and stuff rather than generic shit like wow they cant even be bothered to voice their npcs
took a year or so break and came back like the other day and its still awesome, I just cant justify 16 a month that could buy legit 50 hour games or multiple games all , all for their own bloat problem to be fixed

gonna check out aion 2 in a couple days , its f2p and looks next gen and has fast combat

The only MMOs worth playing are the same ones everyone was playing in 2004.
So just go back to one of those.
>>
Same ones from a decade ago, GW2, WoW, FFXIV, OSRS.

Yeah might try out some aion2, heard some pretty middling things but may be fun to mess around in for awhile.

I dropped ffxiv for same reason the mandatory sub fees were too much I was paying just to check in once in a while to make sure my house didn't get deleted
>>

Aion2 has an "optional" sub fee but I'm guessing if you want to do anything in the end game or crafting you're going to need it.

This was actually a stealth MMO thread. I didn't play anything but RS back then so I don't know which are good or were previously good but suck now. I hear people hate Maplestory and Phantasy Star now for example.

they keep selling prestige making the whole thing pointless
all you do is buy your waifu bikini for $20 and stand around because you did it you beat the game theres nothing more you can achieve
a good mmorpg would have bikinis locked behind at least months of grinding (not gold or anything other than pure time and luck)
like max cape in osrs but its a max bikini

According to some reviews, the Solo/Coop content is no worse for you as a pure F2P, but if you even think about PvP, you better pay up or you get deleted by whoever put in the most money.

Sword of Justice was the only modern mmo with soul but no one gave it a chance
>>
Age of Wushu was my favourite MMO until Snail raped it to death
>>

It's been dead since social networks replaced the social aspect of them and the games themselves became microtransaction hells whose gameplay is catered either to people who enjoy grinding resources for days of irl time or to shitty pvp clan crowd of people with brain defficiencies
