Someone has tasked Claude and GPT6 Astra to make a better Starcraft Brood War bot than the human ones out now, though it's Protoss PvP bots only. After 14 hours of iteration Astra is competing against the 2nd and 3rd best human written Protoss bots.https://starskirmish.com/hillclimb/ or https://goodstartlabs.com/research/keep-going describes what they're doingStream: https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1nxeLMvdoDQJX
>>748946443you mean a better AI to act as a player?are they just trying to make one kind or one where you can adjust the skill?
Isn't there already a stolen bot loose on the ladder spamming lockdown with 6000apm?
>>748946443>apm>38klol
>>748946860Kinda, they have to use https://github.com/bwapi/bwapiSo it doesn't maphack, but bots have have some intrinsic advantages like being able to see the health values of every unit, stuff like that. Not perfect but it's what was designed before bots had vision modules.>>748947180That's Pluto. If Astra and Claude get past S-tier, they compete against Pluto>>748947229There's some kind of weird fuckery that makes it look like that because of how the AI has to control groups of units using BWAPI.What's interesting to me is that Astra's bots are much lower APM than the other side.
>>748947180Turns out it's super weak vs specific builds like early game all-ins or certain cheese. It also has no idea what drops are and gets confused when the reaver zoops back up into a shuttle making it think it's safe again.
Yeah no shit, a computer can micro everything in the entire map all at once, no human can do that
>>748948048I would like add, maybe a human can beat AI in turn based games, it no way it's gonna do it in real time games
>>748948048These bots are playing as close to human-like as they can, they actually have limits to their capabilities to be below the top pros. Pluto runs at about 240 APM https://github.com/tscmoo/pluto (apparently the one on the ladder is using maphack from some griefer - https://tl.net/forum/brood-war/646339-bot-on-ladder)Also these bots do get beaten by pros, though we'll see if the result of this contest is undefeatable. The hillclimb has a 48 hour limit I think from the goodstartlabs explanation.
>>748946443I am so fucking psyched for this. I'm baseding out and I don't even care. If there's one really positive thing I could see AI doing it's making bots capable of being spontaneous and almost-creative. If it can replace human players in online multi player games there's so many old games I'd play again. The funny thing is that I'm sure it already is less bot-like than some players you'd meet online.
they are playing against the in game ai? why not against each other?
>>748949093They're making bots that compete against the best human written bots. Supposedly they won't ever beat Stardust, or maybe they will.
What was it during the COVID lockdowns that google put their specific SC2 AI against the worlds top class players?none of this can be impressive to anyone anymore.
watching it live>no actual micro>no forward planning i.e. how grey just lost all those dragoons to storm>no pull back or baits or dodges>excessive unit movement at base for no reason>no ground holding, no patrol, no scouting>no strats but build and massThe important part isn't that a human can't react to these things on pure map vision, control, and micro. It's that they are retarded, and are merely bruteforcing the retardation.>>748949650Ye. The deepmind SC2 bot. That thing was/is good.
what even is this shit I'm watchinga 12 year old korean could match the upper half of bots
>>748946443>though it's Protoss PvP bots only.More like zzzzz
>>748946443Based. One of my gripes with this remaster is the fact that blizzard didnt bother to update its archaic AI bot from the 2000s. Having a finely tuned AI in BW is good actually, because playing 1v1 online for fun as a noob is impossible on its ranked mode. At least now we can have some fun 1v1 matches vs AI.That being said, having bots running around in the ranked ladder is stupid and ruins the competition
>>748948949Yeah, that's something I've always looked forward to. Don't give a shit about Starcraft, but there are a lot of games I'd play if I had the option to again.
How come no ones ever tasked ai with creating a competent bot in grand strategy games like stellaris? Do you realize how much replay value it would add to that genre?
>Let me try a completely different approach -- I'll "boom" a lot of resources and build an army of Dragoons. They are versatile units that should be able to handle anything in large numbers.>Great! I've amassed a large army of Dragoons. Let me advance to find the enemy base.>Oh no! Several Dragoons got stuck and were left behind in my base. In StarCraft, Dragoons are notorious for their poor pathfinding. BUT WAIT -- this is actually a good thing! Having some Dragoons in reserve allows me to reinforce battles or base defense as needed.
>>748949650>>748949773It was massively hyped. They did a live test and the human player clowned on the bot by loading and unloading his army in the bot's base from a flying transport, making the bot's own army pace back and forth in the middle of the map each time switching between attacking the human's base or returning home to defend.
>>748950724This, so much this
>>748950884the deepmind SC2 bot was live though, it was adapting on its own. I still watch those matches every couple years because it's just so good to see the interactions.
>>748946443Why don't they ask the LLMs to make a RTS game as good as StarCraft?
>>748950724For one grand strategy or 4x games are a lot more complex than the average RTS, second they aren't that popular, third the companies that make those games probably don't want the games AIs to be that good, for example most people that play HOI4 do it at the lowest difficulty.
>53,000 apm to ball up in a choke point and die
>>748951430Not that I'm certain that'll ever happen, but this would be an important first step to that. In learning how to be a fun opponent, the AI is learning what makes SC fun. So if this turns out well (key word if) then it has a serious shot at doing that.
