There are also 3 seperate types of counters that you can only do when that specific counter is being queued up; yellow is your basic counter that everyone has, purple counters which are character specific but can keep your turn going, and red counters that do huge chunks of damage and can only be blocked by one specific class and ends your turn immediately, the latter two counters also have cooldowns tied to them so you can't spam it. General flow of combat is seeing what your opponent is gonna do and react accordiglngly to prevent their turn from happening, then combo together as many optimal actions as you can with your party with the AP you have without stalling

Though, I STRONGLY recommend you just focus on doing harder levels of part 1 until you have one or two calamity dragons with most of their story fragments unlocked because defeating them in part 2 affects how much sword power you'll get, and you can't really grind minor calamities for sword power because you only get 1.1k per fight.
