am I missing something? It's a good game but im not sure how this is supposed to be one of the best games ever, the music sounds nice and graphics/locations/characters look nice but I'm 2 hours in and ive done nothing but mash a through every combat encounter without experiencing any form of resistance and the story is just fine, nothing out of the ordinary for a jrpg
>>748951626Chrono Trigger is extremely low difficulty so don't expect any resistance unless you impose restrictions

>>748951626what part of the game are you at
>>748952131I just completed the first part of the future section
>>748952185the future section drags and is considered a low point in the story, if you like what came before then try getting at least getting to the magus fight
>>748952079So a zoomie then... Incidentally, is CT the first game to let you sit on the villain's throne ala Resi4? Love little details like that.
>>748951626I dropped it because I got bored of not knowing where/when it wants me to go next.
>>748951626You're missing being 11 in 1995. You're removed both in age and physical time from the target audience. A lot of JRPGs are like this and you'll get confused as to why you don't get it. Your brain is already too old and the world it released in is gone.
You're not missing anything, just like most "classics" it's a mediocre game hard carried by nostalgia.t. 40 years old unc
>>748951626There is a phenomenon called "Baby's First JRPG". It both refers to a jrpg that is so easy it is near impossible to lose but also the one jrpg some little shit played as their first 20 years ago and still holds it up as the top of the genre.Chrono Trigger is a popular one but the most popular of the type is of course Final Fantasy 7.It is quite notable how Overrated Trigger is not even the top 5 jrpg on the system it released on so this one is even weirder but can be explained in part with games not getting brought over or not being part of burgerfat retro tubers childhood.
>>748951626It's just a very charming and smooth 16bit jrpg. Most jrpgs are kinda divisive, like you'll find people who get annoyed by BoF3 or FF6, but there's nothing to hate in Chrono Trigger. Personally I think it's too easy and too short, but that too helps its mass appeal; ain't no one getting filtered by Chrono Trigger.
>>748951626The japanese rrally think sewwer water looks like that?
>>748952868I played it like 10 years ago hen I was 17 and enjoyed the fuck out of it. I find that people seems to want to experience some pseudo psychological/philosophical stories and hate a charming adventure game. Like how people hate Kotor 1 but suck the balls of Kotor 2. >>748951626It's the normie cinematic RPG when Square did good games.A very nice experience for people that will play one JRPG in their lives.

>>748952868I agree. There are things to like about Chrono Trigger if you play it for the first time as an adult in 2026, but don't expect it to be one of the best gaming experiences you'll ever have. Very far from it.
>>748951626>ive done nothing but mash a through every combat encounter without experiencing any form of resistanceWelcome to the general consensus for Chrono Trigger over the last 30 years. What makes the game so remembered are the characters and the overall premise, not the combat. If you want something more robust there's three Final Fantasy titles on the same system.
>>748951626You’re only 10% through the game. Generally only bosses require any strategy.

>>748952868I played CT for the first time when I was 18 and it's one of my faves. The conversation your party has about the Entity was the most I felt involved in the actual story of a game including games where you can create your own character and make your own dialogue choices. That one cutscene is why TV/Movies will never be as good as games and it was 1996 that they were creative enough to implement that into the game. Fucking felt like I was there at that campfire with them.
>>748956958Oh, and the trial was also impressive and got my attention enough to play beyond that. CT was ahead of its time on the creativity end. Better than games 30 years later.
>>748956958If that's the kind of writing that blows your mind with how engaging it is, then I suggest giving Dora the Explorer a watch next.

>>748956480Yes
>>748956958These days you can listen to kino dialogue about being nonbinary and some character's trauma that totally isn't a self-insert from one of the writers. Haven't RPGs advanced so far in 30 years?
>>748956625>There are things to like about Chrono Trigger if you play it for the first time as an adult in 2026, but don't expect it to be one of the best gaming experiences you'll ever haveThe problem is that CT is hailed as one of the best games ever made, and almost always considered TOP-3 JRPGs of all time. Its hard to both consider it one of the best but also temper your expectations because "its not that great".Honestly /v/ is absolutely poisoned with nostalgia and its strange to see. My fav game of all time is Alundra, but I wouldn't rate it over 7/10. And that is if you use unworking designs patch. If english translation was remade to be more accurate, I could see it maybe be 8/10 but imo it has so many flaws it would be questionable.

No matter how many times I've tried to get into this game I always lose interest after the Corridor of Time unlocks and you're supposedly free to go to whichever timeline you want. The story events up to that point all have been captivating and driving forward, and after the whole momentum seemingly just drop. The main intrigue is already disclosed, you can go and suicide against the final boss, everything else just feels like an optional side-quest created to get more characters (when you're already past the maximum limit of active ones, lol) and to get stronger.Incidentally, the gameplay up to that point had also not been very good. Basic bitch ATB without class systems, skill point allocation or even fiddling with equipment with various effects and stats. So the game that had been carried by story events drops the ball in that regard and the gameplay stays the same basic stuff. It's preposterous how this got critically acclaimed this much when there had already been titles like FFV and Tactics Ogre with deeper gameplay. For the record, I first tried this game on a SNES emulator when I was 15 back in 2006, then once more with its re-release on NDS and a couple times since then for a total of 3 or 4 attempts. I just don't seem to ever get it even if RPG had always been one of my main genres.
>>748957146>Alundra 7/10See I've only played Alundra 2 as a kid and I give that a 1/10 only because the princess is hot
>>748957210Maybe anon wanted to discuss CT and was confused from all the hype the game has been getting over the decades. Was his mistake that he genuinely expressed his opinion or that he disagrees with you?
>>748957394>It's preposterous how this got critically acclaimed this much when there had already been titles like FFV and Tactics Ogre with deeper gameplay.Normalfags have always been more impressed with aesthetics or narrative than gameplay. The same is true for FF7 back then, it played worse than what came before despite the materia system allowing some fun stuff, at very least.
>>748957395Yeah Alundra 2 is completely different. First one was more of a Zelda clone but with a jump. Platforming can be divisive due to the perspective. Alundra 2 then was made to be 3D because "all games are 3D now". Believe me, I was more disappointed in Alundra 2 as a kid than anyone else.
that's JRPGs in general. At best they're kind of simplistic and repetitive games, that you wont get much out of unless you're charmed by the art and the storytelling.
>>748957378You sure you like jrpgs?
>>748956941If only there was some way to look that up! Someone should invent something like that! You are a fucking embarrassment to Millennials. I swear, the Millennials born in the 90's are just the alpha version of zoomers.
>>748957146>The problem is that CT is hailed as one of the best games ever made, and almost always considered TOP-3 JRPGs of all time. Its hard to both consider it one of the best but also temper your expectations because "its not that great".If you're looking for gaming recommendations, then treat every entry on "best of all time" rankings that came out before 2010 with a massive grain of salt. A lot of the praise for older games stems from them being influential, or they represented huge leaps forward in technology or game design. That's not to say there aren't old games out there that hold up to this day. It's just that it's hard to disentangle their present-day quality from those other factors I mentioned. If you take an acclaimed game from the period after the industry started hitting diminishing returns e.g. on its technological progress, your experience with it is far more likely to be truly special.
>>748957378Based. This guy games.
>>748953118>Final Fantasy 7This is completely reasonable to have as a favorite though. Like, I don't consider it the best, but it's so well done in so many ways I couldn't knock someone who did.Trigger is way more over-hyped despite containing far less depth. It's extremely 'shounen' and basic in that way, it's just good at tricking people into thinking it is more complex and freeform than it is.
For me, it's Phantasy star 4.
>>748956657>are the characters and the overall premise,No, it's definitely the music above all.The characters are very one note outside of possibly a special event with a few of them.
>>748957840>the Millennials born in the 90's are just the alpha version of zoomersI like using the term 'zoombers' for them. They're the specific demographic who thinks early 2000s Cartoon Network cartoons are some kind of peak of /co/tv/ and things like that.
>>748957042>>748957363It's a shame that cutscene probably went over your heads (if you even played far enough to get to it)
>>748951626That has been the case for every "classic" game I played like FF7 and OoT
>>748957628Nta but what does the fact that someone doesn't have JRPGs in their top-3 matter?Hell, what does it matter if someone doesn't even play much JRPGs.We are talking about a game that /v/ along many other sites consider one of the best games ever made in history of vidya. If you have to already have JRPGs in your top-3 to even enjoy CT, then is it best of all time?I have FFIX in my top-3 and DQVIII in my top-10 games(and both admittely due to nostalgia) but when I played CT for the first time in 2020 because I didn't have anything better to do, I didn't think it was that special as a game or even as a JRPG. Characters are decently good, but their designs are carried quite hard by Toriyama's art outside of the game. Music is fantastic but you can listen it outside of the game. I'm sure it hits hard in-game, that is true for almost all good soundtracks, but when gameplay is most basic JRPG combat and the storytelling isn't anything revolutionary compared to games that have been coming out since then, should it be considered one of the best games of all time and like best JRPG ever when topic comes up.Honestly its kind of false advertising by the people who like it, and the word "dated" or concept of a game being outdone by something else is considered borderline curse. Its okay to like games that aren't 10/10 masterpieces or included in 3x3 threads. But when you have the need to start asking someone's top-3 games to somehow "own" them for not liking a game that/v/ praises to high heavens, you kinda lose the point of the conversation>OMG TLOU2 IS TOP-5 GAMES EVER WITH TLOU1>"I played them and neither were that good, basic gameplay and it feels like it wants to be a movie, like VA was good and graphics good for their time but thats all. Also zombies were the all craze when it TLOU came out">MMHM BUT DO YOU LIKE CINEMATIC GAMES?>"No...? But you said its best game ever so-">OKAY BUT YOU DON'T LIKE THEM SO TLOU IS STILL THE BESTlevel of argument

>>748958607>omg someone LE DIED...in a ff game???? That never happened before!!!Lol. The death sequence is very far from being the only reason it gets praised though is IS rightly praised as the best and most powerful death sequence in any game.
Honestly, looking at this thread kinda depresses me.OP made an actual video game thread, discussing a video game he just played(old one at that which isn't in any current hype cycle due to remake level announcement or e-celeb video), gave genuine opinion of his first impressions and criticism in good manner without any "trannyshit liked by boomers with no taste kek dilate chuddywuddy"-shit nor shitter screenshots. And what is /v/'s reaction?Yell that he's a zoomer and desperately trying to make gotcha arguments to "win" because someone didn't like a 30 year old SNES game that has been genuinely overhyped and praised to heavens./v/ is one of the most embarrassing places to discuss vidya or go against "board opinions", board full of bitter 30yo somethings screeching that everything is shit and wanting to go back to "good old days", obsessive idpol spamming idiots, and genuinely porn addicted permalosers. At worst case, some people are mix of those, sometimes all of them.Nobody here wants vidya discussion, unless it is just agreeing with "correct opinions". People should grow up and stop identifying through brands and consumer goods so much.
