Why didn't old games need it?
>>748955604uncluttered environment and good camera framing
>>748955604Because back then you bought the strategy guide and used Game Genie to "beat" games instead
Because gaming became popularized and thus normalfag retards flooded in, ultimately complaining so much about extremely basic puzzles and functions that devs started babying them.
i would get so lost in some of those old star wars fps.
>>748955604art direction went ass in all of the world.Color Theory has been discarded as every person on the planet has been blinded by screens deteriorating the eye cones making them more colorblind.
>>748955604Well, in addition to other methods of visual and level design that highlighted the paths the player were intended to take, the graphics weren't as detailed as they are today, and interactable objects didn't get lost in the environment. Also, to be honest, games back then were very linear, so there was no possibility for the player to take a wrong turn. You just went from the start of the level to the finish line.
>>748955604in old games you would just wander around the level for hours trying out every nook and crany or look up the guide in your local gaming print magazine or ask that dude in school who also has the game. i remember it took me forever to finish those 90s shooters because they loved puzzles. you entered a room killed everything in 40 seconds and then spent the next 10 minutes figuring out how to get to the next room, jumping on boxes, going into vents, pushing levers etc. halo was the first shooter that just let you go and rip and tear shit without having to do these platformer puzzles all the time.
>>748955671Sex
>>748955604Modern games don't need it. Just like they don't need crafting or cooking for buffs mechanics.
>>748955604millennials have a higher iq so we didnt need it
>>748955671why do you have to make me horny anon?
>>748955604Cleaner environments allowed for easier identification of points of interest.
>>748955604they were mostly white and not 3rd world retards
>>748955604Graphics were worse, so you could instantly tell what was an interactable
>>748955604>There's a light over there, better go check it out>This door doesn't have a handle, guess I can't open it>"This door is locked" message in a game that doesn't have keys>Low-res door.png>Oh no, a pile of fallen cardboard boxes blocks the way>A 2 B>Interaction icons
Some older games did do it, just not in ways that stuck out so glaringly hard and were repeated by heaps of games in a row identically
>>748955790>games back then were very linear, so there was no possibility for the player to take a wrong turn. You just went from the start of the level to the finish line.??? it was the exact opposite of what you said. play half life 1 and 2 for the first time or any of the unreal or quake3 engine games back then and tell me you never took a wrong turn or got stuck. devs back then loved trapping you in a maze.this "streamlining you from start to finish" came along in the 00s with halo and call of duty and also far cry and gta introducing open worlds where getting from a to b was no longer an issue.
because they used floating quest markers and glow in the dark effects
>>748955604they used other shit, like Bloodborne uses yellow lanters to guide you to the shortcut in the fishing hamlet, but thats a conversation /v/ isnt ready to have
>>748955604Games nowadays are literally made for DSP
>>748955671Retarded consolefaggot.

>>748956337Is this achievable natty?
>>748956007the average map in 2000 looked like pic related. it was pretty much impossible to miss an object
>>748956121Everyone already knows this. The problem is that modern games ignore that aspect of level design and just slap yellow paint on everything instead of making a natural design or layout that already draws the player to something without breaking immersion. Shit like yellow paint, glowing interaction points, witcher sense, etc are bandaids meant to hide a lack of effort.
The game would pause to tell you how to climb the ladder
>>748955604Never encountered this in a game before. Stop playing trash.
>>748956121>they used other shitSome examples from Deus Ex, Ultima Underworld or Fallout?
>>748956361To be fair that picture's resolution is already like twice that at which the vast majority of gamers actually played it on
>>748955604Because old games didn't care if faggots got filtered. Now every journo, retarded gamer dad, and ADHD brainrotted nigger needs to beat the game to make up for the lack of ass beatings their own dads should have given them. Beating a game used to mean something and would have every thot in elementary school sucking you off on the playground
>>748955604because zoomers and the gens after don't have enough brain cells for anything harder than brain dead problems
>>748956464in deus ex you would just crawl into every vent duct you could find, drop into every room you can drop into from there and push the great big button that opens the locked door.
>>748956361old FPSes had dogshit navigation and you'd usually get lost looping around empty levels, Doom would be unplayable without the map
>>748956485>boomers never showed kids how to use outdated technology>LOL ZOOMERS
>>748955604Small development teams usually only comprised of a few dozen employees. Once you scale beyond hundreds of devs, the management overhead required to prevent duplication, deletion and mutation of basic design decisions becomes insurmountable, so relevant assets require active highlighting.Look at the change from Deus Ex to Human revolution or Thief 2 to Thief 3, the games start having inconsistent visual design and require active highlighting just to keep inactive background props and relevant interactive items distinct from one another.>>748956101The Dead Space games post-date the deterioration of games into yellow paint which started occurring in the mid-2000s. >>748956267Then so are the complaints about yellow paint. Things weren't judged by different standards back then.
>>748956695How is a can opener outdated in any way, you knuckle-dragger? For that matter, how is simply using your eyes to not get stuck in a game outdated?
>>748956636Eeeh that's pushing it. You needed to use a very old toaster to be forced into running quake/hl/ut on 640x480. Something without a video card, for example. My riva tnt2 pro was doing fine with all of them at 1024x768 and later 1280x1024 when I upgraded my monitor.

>>748956789>How is a can opener outdated in any waycans are barely used anymore, plastic packaging is cheaper and the few cans that you can still find in super markets have that opener loop built in and so you dont need a classic can opener. i havent used a can opener in years even though i eat canned food at least once a week.
>>748956792I remember being blown away by the original Unreal and how wel it ran, from the screenshots I expected it to be a slideshow, game looked incredibly for its time
>>748956615I know, you'd just play the game and find your way around.
modern games don't need it either, but companies are getting more and more scared and barely keeping it together, they are terrified of players losing interest because of the tiniest bit of friction
it's a proven fact that 14 year old in the 90's where smarter overall than modern ones, because they had to experience life for real instead of using a video tutorial and a chat.
>>748955604need that yellow paint in my ASS
Less non-whites playing games.
>>748955604Old games weren't littered with mountains of uninteractable garbage. Just another one of the major downsides to pursing "realism", along with games taking a decade+ to make now.
>>748955671rubbing...
>>748955604Low poly graphics prevented clutter. If you saw a ladder, you could probably use it.
>>748956128His “NO U” meltdown about how he isn’t the target audience while refusing to acknowledge the astronomical odds of him being studied by a room full of literal game devs is so fucking funny. Of all the stupid guinea pigs to be featured, it had to be Phil.
The simpler the graphics are, the simpler it is to see what’s relevant or not. But once the amount of clutter and environmental objects increases, the more important it is to have good environmental design that makes it intuitive to see what matters and what doesn’t. Doing it subtly requires clever level and visual design, yellow paint is the cop-out solution.Of course it doesn’t help that mainstream games are extremely scared of players getting stuck, so actual stupidification is also contributing to it.
>>748955604New games have reached a point in realism where it's not clear what you can and can't interact with to progress.
>>748955604Gaymers didn't have as many distractions to bounce off from a game the second they got lost or stuck. Modern videogame design calls to minimize friction.
>>748956485>parents don't teach kid something>magically the kid's faultBoomers...
Nobody really beat old games. So the argument is pointless to have
>>748955660>uncluttered environmentBecause this. Chasing realism just lead to cluttered locales that let you flex just how many polygons shrubbery or stationary has.
>>748957290Which is the fault of the developers and something that they can fix.
>>748956926The original function hasn’t been lost just because they added safety nets for retards; in fact, most cans can just be flipped over and opened the old way. It’s not the same for exploration in games because you’re mostly still walking there like you always would, but now it’s all highlighted for you.
>>748955604Some backgrounds in early 3d games were pre rendered. The things they'd put in around it stood out like a sore thumb. If a ladder was usable, or a cliff edge was grabbable, it looked like you could. It wasn't the same texture as the background most of the time.
>>748957219Kill yourself.
>>748957413we never should have gone beyond max payne level visuals
>>748957365>taught how to use basic toolAh yes, how can I forget can-opener class, man I remember studying for weeks to pass the end of year exam Almost as hard as screw driver school
Most people didn't beat games at all, and we had guides and shit like gamefaqs writeups
>>748955604Before speed trannies were a thing, we took our time exploring and didn't need a trail of bread crumbs guiding us the entire way.
>>748956636skill issue. the appeal of old shooters was to navigate around a maze while shooting baddies, then they began to pander to casuals who claim that levels are badly designed if they aren't railroaded like CoD or Wolverine.
>>748957696decline of "old style" fps happened with half life
>>748955604Dude, old games had bright shiny toddler colors all over the place because games are for children. Stop trying to make games look like movies.
>>748957719unfortunately true, half life was still good for me, but it make every map linear and scripted. every copycat started simplifying its formula afterwards
>>748957524Unironically why can't have have this, just with the objects itself being more detailed, without every flat surface being cluttered with random objects?
>>748957879More objects = bigger numbersBigger numbers = better gameWelcome to marketing.
>>748956695You can't look at a tool and figure out for yourself how to use it, goddamn gen nigger is why the economy is fucked no wonder they want to send you off to become fertilizer
>>748957524This is actually true. You can immediately tell it's a videogame, but it looks good. Its strength lies not in the details of any object, but in the detail of the overall scene.
>>748956206Video games age in dog years bro.
>>748957879Make the damn game and see how you get on then. You're the same retards that nostalgiafag for Blockbuster when the company is dead because there is no paying market.
>>748957524Remedy artists went out and took photos of real life shit for textures. This is why levels look great, but characters not so much. Still interesting to compare MP1 models to those from other games that released in 2001, though.
>>748957147could be an esg requirement. all games nowadays have to be "inclusive" which means the game has to be designed in a way that literal retards and literally vision impaired people can play it or else blackrock will decrease their weight on the company stock which will cost the company hundreds of millions and cost the ceos their performance bonus.the devs literally get audits from esg consultating agencies that will look at the game and tick checkboxes on their esg rating score.its not even that the devs have a choice here, even if they are chuds, they still have to shit out a product that conforms to these esg demands.
>>748957879I don't know. Probably has something to do with you not playing video games anymore and not actually knowing what modern video games look like but you still come here because you're a loser that has nowhere else to go just to make dishonest complaints about video games.
>>748957950This is a tool, that is some dogshit abducted nazi scientists would've been forced to develop because mutts were too stupid not to cut themselves.
>>748955604They did. I get lost in old games all the time.
>>748955604The average gamer is a retarded nigger, trust me i tried to respect their intelligence by not shoving a tutorial in their faces and instead leaving it in the main menu and still they couldn't figure out the controls or how to use the tutorial.>>748955702Did you forget about the time when HL2 testers couldn't find their way out of the antlion nest? That was over 20 years agot this shit is by no means a new phenomenon.
>>748958453>mfw trying to find a vent to progress in Jedi Outcast that would in a normal game lead to some secret or bonusOlder games had a problem of not telegraphing enough at times, especially if there were no unique assets to signal where you were supposed to go.
>>748958010fromslop games for shirrr
help, i don't know where to go now
>>748955604I think game devs are bringing in literal people that don't play games as play testers and being told to cater things to their experience. Actual proper game devs would teach players of any skill level so they could reach a basic level of competency and then have a backup system for retards like game journalists like a pissbaby mode.
video games used to be made for boys with average to high iq. now they're made for women that have never played a video game.
NOOOOOOOOOO
SAVE ME YELLOW PAINT CHAN
>>748957413Kinda wrong, it´s mostly because trying to chase wider audiences, that you have to dumb down your product. See latest example, wolverine, you have not only 2, but 3 visual cues for objets, button prompts on a ledge thats already white painted, etc.
>Internet Historian now has a channel where he plays games with Jontron>they do one in that new Avatar game>it's just AAA linear slop with no difficulty or barriers at all>Jontron spends the entire video bitching that it's unclear when the game is telling him what to do and even has "find objective" sight>this is a guy who spent his years playing bullshit NES games etc that should have been way harderI would say we need paint for stupid people but this is a guy who is supposed to have played actual games before and he's basically worse than DSP somehow.
>>748957696But railroad linear design keeps the focus on what's actually fun. The shooting and combat. Should Devil May Cry have large sprawling levels with puzzles and navigation, or should it be hallways with arena after arena?
>>748957804Im playing Red Faction and while it's a Half Life clone it does do something very interesting with the level design. Many levels have branching paths and alternate routes to the end of the level. There's plenty of areas some players may never see even though the game is linear. You can even create your own path by blowing up holes in the environment.
>>748958734You automatically lose 50 IQ points while streaming because you're also trying to hold a conversation and be funny at the same time.
>>748958923It was a pre-recorded video, and even if your IQ reaches double digits you should be able to play a fucking movieslop game.
>>748956121>Bloodborne uses elements that make diagetic sense which is exactly what people don't like about yellow paint slopWaow>>748956192Don't leftoids get tired of being disingenuous insects 24/7?
Have you thanked her today?
>>748955604Less visual complexity
>>748959420Nah.I thanked HIM.
>>748959524games in the 90s and early 00s were often just tech demos imho. the devs often just wanted to showcase some new physics interactions, larger maps, better lighting, ingame animations etc. they also came straight from playing 2d platformer games so jumping from platform to platform was parcouring around was a huge thing for them.
>>748955604They did. They just used objective markers the guide players by the nose. However developers realized that some players are even more retarded than that so they used yellow paint to guide them to the next objective.
>>748959524This. Now theres so much visual clutter and lack of talent that its hard to discern whats traversable. Slapping paint on it makes it easy mode so you dont have to be clever and figure out how to properly build a level. Some old games like vtmb have some sections where you really need to wrack your brain to figure out what you can climb though, some sewer sections in that game are so confusing
>>748959767i was a kid in the 90s. being stuck in a video game and being unable to progress because you couldnt figure something out was normal. and plenty of games were ultimately discarded when i didnt find the solution or i got stuck too often. i didnt finish tomb raider for example, because the puzzles became just too annoying for me and then i said, fuck that game, id rather play worms or need for speed again.
>>748955604A lot of old game would do shit like>highlight or add shine to interactable objects>use spinning wobbly doodads>show a floating UI element>just use the exact same model every-time for a particular gimmickLater some games started trying to make the game more immersive and giving more flexibility to art design by doing things like showing more wear/worn out colors on stuff. That eventually evolved into yellow paint to completely retard proof the game and ironically ruining the immersion again. Mast as well just go back to spinning wobbly doodas at this point.
>>748959996tomb raider is a meticulous platformer that's engaging even if you cleared the enemies already, FPSes are the worst because they're incredibly empty and dull without enemies so trying to find where to go next is basically torture
>>748959718>games in the 90s and early 00s were often just tech demos imho. You are actually retarded. Never open your dickhole again.
>>748955604because back then, you just made the game.these days, corporate middle management forces you to design it for the lowest common denominator.
>>748957365>>748956695>zoomies
>>748960926ultimate humiliation
the game industry wants you to finish games faster. that's why so many games come out with the highest difficulty locked and stuff like yellow paint, and suggestions to lower difficulty when you die. This is because the growth in the number of gamers has leveled off, then the growth in the number of retards that would play microtransaction games and actually pay money has leveled off, so rushing you through games is all they have left for revenue growth.
>>748957524For me it's the end of PS3 era. I can't see a game that need more quality than what that hardware allows.

>>748959606>hisFuck off this would've been so hot
>>748957950>You can't look at a tool and figure out for yourself how to use itAnd that includes failing at it at first you retarded whore. Except you didn't have some subhumans filming you to mock you for not getting it right in 2 seconds, but go on and tell people they're worthless for not mastering riding a bike in the first minute of sitting their asses on it for the first time in their lives.
>>748956101That's literally just a objective marker. The main use I and many other got out of it was knowing where NOT to go, so you don't miss out on a bunch of stuff you find via level exploration. It also makes a massive difference in the simple way, that it doesn't feel out of place in a sci-fi setting, unlike the magic yellow paint goblin who marks everything everywhere no matter how little sense it makes in the environment. The worst isn't even the yellow paint itself, but that it is another symptom of the nu gayming industry being too retarded for gaming, and is unsolving things in the most amateurish way possible. Leading players and marking interactable objects and environment was already a thing and done a million times better years ago in a variety of ways. It's really just incompetence due to affirmative action tier hiring practices over the last two decades, which you can tell by technical content quality of these studios crashing and burning otherwise as well.
>>748956926>cans are barely used anymoreLOL this retarded nigga never buys groceries, you probably live off of doordashed goyslop daily and weight 400 lbs LMAO

>>748955604Steve Jobs invited normies onto the internet, gaming went mainstream, the average normie's IQ is barely above room temperature so there was no other way.
>>748955604Older games were made by and for White Americans, Europeans and Japanese.
>>748956485New generations will probably see a fork, stab it in their forhead and wear it around like an accessory. Call it a tuning fork.
>>748957524Every object in the room looks to clean in sharp
>>748955604because gamers used to be more curious and didn't mind running around in one place for longer without finding right away what they were supposed to do because that was just part of the fun, now average gamer put in a situation where he has to think for longer than 30 seconds and not be spoonfeed will just lose interest in the game and just go play something else, and developers don't want you to think their game was "too hard" and that it was a bad choice installing it, so they put yellow paint so your average gamer won't ever be put in that difficult situation
