Do you think it was a mistake for Nintendo to discontinue the DS line?
anon, the DS went on for over a decade and only ended when they made a home console + pocket console hybrid
>>748957334DS concept was already old as fuck in 2011. The magic of touchscreens disappeared after smartphones became common.
>>748957334It sucked for series like Etrian Odyssey and Layton, but most of the appealing aspects of playing DS games could've easily been carried forward if Nintendo integrated a stylus into the Switch's design.
It was the last real handheld device that didn't need a carrying case, so yeah. The dual-screen clamshell design was ingenious. It's really handy having a menu or map displayed on the bottom. Touch screen was used in a lot of ways that a simple joystick couldn't replace. Honestly hard to improve on the design besides more comfy buttons and better graphics. Original DS Phat felt the best to hold. Unfortunately 3DS was a downgrade in a lot of ways like the boot times and fragility, although it had better screens and graphics.
>>748957334Yes and no, I'm glad Nintendo mostly dropped gimmicks since they're terrible for preservation and emulation.
>>748958925you can't fit a PSP or a Vita in your pocket? Do you wear girl's pants?
>>748957334i hate switch in handheld mode and i would kill for a new ds. never cared for their consoles but nintendo's handhelds are godlike
I have been revisiting DS games recently and while I don't like touch controls being forced where they don't belong, the games which were actually made with it in mind were really good and I feel the gimmick inspired devs to do new ips instead of the same old
>>748959081>PSP or a VitaI was talking about Nintendo. Nobody cares about those. It was more of a remark on how Nintendo claims the Switch to be "handheld" when it really isn't.
>>748959232whatever dude, shit's arbitrary, the og gameboy wasn't "pocketable" either
>>748959465The Gameboy pocket was tho
Yes They should have made the 4DS or some shit like that instead of the switch
>>748959662Why not the Nintendo Switch DS? A foldable screen tablet with detachable controllers?
>>748959554the gameboy pocket is thicker than the 3ds xl and about as thick as the switch lite (accounting for the analogs)
>>748957635This. People were sick of the DS line of system by 2011. The original Nintendo 3DS sold 154.02 million while the 3DS only sold 75.54 million. If they kept going it would have sold even less.
>>748959943It would need to be to big for it to be actually portable
>>748960981>75 millions is somehow bad
>>748957334Yes. the NDS had shittons of exclusive games, had an incredibly long battery life, and was very compact and portable. It was everything a handheld should be.
>>748957334Yes, a lower-tech option for small team and customers to turn to would be a welcome alternative right now.>>748960981Pure revisionism. Reminder that the 3DS initially sold so poorly they gave away GBA ROMs (which were never put up for sale later) to try and beg people to buy it before they had to cut the price. It wasn't until Pokemon came that people started adopting it in a big way.t. purchased a 3DS early to play the MML3 demo
>>748961126>75 million is anywhere close to 154 millionretard missed the point award
>>748961243The 3DS sold poorly because it was $250. Funny how times have changed.
>>748957334Yes, cause Switch and its successor are worse in every regard.
>>748957334The only way Nintendo would bring back the DS is if they made a low end smartphone device and you couldn't not buy games, only pay a subscription to emulate their games. And there would be three tiers of subscription
>>748957334Honestly I want to see a single screen, stylus only handheld that is basically like a smartphone. The form factor is ideal. We've been doing this since the earliest civilization used sticks and clay tablets. There's no reason it couldn't work. Having a dedicated gaming smartphone based entirely around the stylus. The problem is that nobody has the balls to do it. Only Nintendo could even dare to regress to such simplicity. You might be thinking that we already have this with tablets, but you're dramatically underestimating how the operating systems and core phone functionality interferes with gaming in general. The device has to be built so that it only does gaming. One thing even the Switch product line gets wrong is that they keep trying to shove ads and news and updates on to your gaming screen. The Switch 1 was actually decent before the early updates fucked with the home screen. The main limiting factor in the success of the device I'm talking about is the games. The games would have to be built entirely around the stylus and like I said nobody has the balls to do it. You would need a few system selling games. But really, if you focused on catering to art and writer fags this wouldn't be too difficult. This is where Nintendo would fail again because they're try to restrict everything because children might draw penises with the stylus.
Their mistake with the DS line was removing the GBA slot
>>748961780This has to be the most retarded post I've seen in a while. Someone wants shitty mobile-tier touch-only games, but thinks phones/tablets don't do it well enough (somehow) so he wants a dedicated device? Srsly wtf am I reading? This sounds like bait.
