Man, it's crazy how bad early ritual and fusion monsters were. And that on top of them being really hard to bring out because there were no decks built around properly interacting with the mechanics. Genuinely makes you think what the fuck they were thinking back then.

I'd assume it was to balance the fact they were a special summon. You were able to get an additional body on the board and whittle down your opponent's board so they no longer had enough tributes for a bigger monster.
>>
>>748962886
Yeah that was the plan
But going -4 to summon a monster that could be taken out by a single fissure was kind of a waste of resources

Yea they were terrible and later changes/summon types like Syncro greatly improved upon the earlier concepts.

Now fusions are a little bit too easy to pull out imo, being almost like purple XYZ but I love ritual decks still,
I’m thinking of making a nouvelle deck to load up on my burger bros as well
>>748962886
Fusions were somewhat better because they came out of the fusion deck, still they were usually just bad cards and not worth it.
Early rituals aside from Relinquished were just unusable though even in early Yugioh

>>

I think in the very early design of the game they assumed Fusion/Ritual or any special summon is overpowered because then you can Tribute summon over them. But since nobody played tribute monsters they just figured those cards can be good on their own.

It allowed you to summon them from your hand so it was more like an opportunity to get rid of any monsters you couldn't normal summon that turn by special summoning another monster instead. If the ritual monster stats were better it may have been more worth it.
Of course, releasing a card with 2500 attack one tribute monster in the set before didn't really help. Summoned Skull was probably too OP to release that early on in the game.

You're assuming that you have access to the entire cardpool and knowledge of the entire game.
Back then you were supposed to get some packs and use what you have.
And imagine this, you could simply play cards you liked, because you liked them.
It's a game for children after all.
>>
>>748975595
>Back then you were supposed to get some packs and use what you have.
yeah and you'd rarely get the required components to use summon rituals/fusions out of packs, and even if you did you'd probably not be able draw/hold on to them long enough to pull it off in a duel

Yugioh is a fundamentally badly designed game because it started out as a literal MTG parody and just managed to luck out into being popular because it had a popular anime to promote it.
>>
>>748976042
True but that's fine. You might be able to trade it with a friend or get it in the future.
And not being able to summon it every every duel is irrelevant. It's fun when you manage to do it every other match. There's other things in your deck you're using too.
>>
>>748961476

yugioh as a card game peaked in the 5D's era. you could play a theme like the cool guys in the anime without it being complete horrible outside of the protag's deck, but you also saw tons of staple cards instead of modern yugioh basically being a fighting game with set characters.

I've been thinking recently about how they could even unfuck the endless powercreep of the modern game that Konami is clearly stuck with. Maybe it would be best if they did a reset of the game. Like a new branch of YGO starting from an earlier point in the game that tries to keep the things less consistent so there's more room for variety of play and experimentation.
Probably would be before pendulums, maybe earlier. What do you guys think? Where would you branch off if you had the choice and what set of design philosophies would you follow if given the chance at a do-over?

They did that. It's called Rush, and it sucks ass.
Didn't they also make some new format very recently that uses a point system?
>>
>>748985945
limiting summons per turn might be the only way to slow down this without removing content, that could rightfully neuter links in general
>>
>>748986143
It's impossible
yugioh needs a reboot
>>
>>748985945
The only way to change the way the game is played would be to remove things, or make an addition with a drastic change like making duels played on a 7x6 grid like in the old manga where the positioning of every card could matter, and changing the rules of everything to need to be played on certain fields and shit.

Ideally they should just scrap the current game, learn from the inherent design mistakes and reboot the game from scratch.

Rush is as much of OCG YuGiOh as the old Game Boy games with schizo rules were
>>
>>748986262
What are even the issues with this game? People keep saying that turns take too long and such. If Konami fixed summon spam, what would be the next biggest issue?
>>
>>748986252
I never played Rush, but that seems to focus more on changing player restrictions. I think it's the card design that's the main problem.

>>748986274
>needs a reboot
Well that's what I'm saying. But does the baby really need to go out with the bathwater?
>>
>>748986646
hand rips, locks, bad hands making it unable to go second and break boards, combo slop taking too long
>>
>>748986397
They didn't learn from their mistakes with Rush though, they literally took the same exact game, cut half the field out, and gave you unlimited normal summons so you could dump your whole hand turn 1 anyways.
>>
>>748986646
the issue is that most players despite their bitching love summon spam and comboing, they like being the hammer but hate when it's their turn to be the nail

I mean think about it, at least for fusions, for a single spell card you could bring out a monster with potentially bigger stats than anything in your main deck, and the constituent monsters could come from your hand meaning that you wouldn't lose any board presence you already had in order to get this big creature.
Rituals were much worse, requiring you to tribute from the field, and have both the ritual card and the ritual monster in your hand at the same time.
Both of these fell in the face of single tribute high attack monsters like summoned skull, and it wouldn't be really until after contact fusion was a thing that special summons became the main source of monsters entering the field.

Not except maybe in specific cases. Rituals were generally easier to bring out (at least in terms of cost) because they were typically also "hand or field", but unlike fusions, they often had generic component requirements, like Black Luster Ritual requiring monsters whose added level was equal to or greater than eight.

We're far past that at this point actually. What you described was the meta 5 years ago. Now it's cards that look at your hand, rip 2 to 3 from it, and set up 5+ negates on field alone (they drew cards so they probably have handtraps too). The game is beyond salvageable, and will die with millennials if they don't do a drastic overhaul. This isn't the opinion of only yugiboomers anymore, even world champions, and all time competitors at the highest level have been echoing this statement lately.
>>
>>748999446
It's not just the voice acting, which can actually be quite good for some characters. The dub just mistranslates important lines and makes shit up all the time instead of being faithful to the story. They've been doing this since Duel Monsters.

But turns out a lot of those skills require showing a card in your hand to activate, and if your hand is already showing then there's nothing to show and therefore, nothing to activate. So people were using Mind on Air to combat metafags relying solely on skills to win and Konami didn't like that.

That's so fucking stupid and explains perfectly how Konami managed to fuck up Cross Duel in just one year.

>>749000687
IIRC it messed with several skills that required you to reveal a card in your hand, and since your hand is revealed you can't reveal a card to activate your skill.

Because without fail when you press faggots who make posts like that what they want to play, it is always the most uninteractive or degenerate shit imaginable.

XYZ and its degenerate child Links are what really destroyed the game. They were both created to be inherently better than other cards not due to power creep (though they got that too) but also because they could just ignore parts of the rules that every other card type has to follow. In addition to getting generic summoning conditions that require no "extra" cards. (Unlike Fusions and Rituals which need to deal with their respective Spell cards, or Synchro which has to deal with mixing tuners and non-tuners, and Ritual and Synchro additionally having to finagle with levels) XYZ and Links simply have every main deck monster of an archetype have an effect that is just a slight rewording of "Special summon the other material directly from wherever and get out your Rank4/Link2". They have no barrier to actually doing anything like finding their spell card or doing level math. It also led to a huge loss in archetype playstyle variety, because instead of different creative gimmicks (whether tier 3 or tier 0) where main deck monsters actually DID things, every XYZ and Link deck only uses main deck monsters as glorified spell cards that exist solely to serve as materials for the Extra Deck.

Game was always fundamentally and mechanically broken since day 1.

Initially the game was "killed" in three stages.
First, the game breaking rarity hikes of Envoy of the End and Luster Solider.
Then came Gladiator Beasts and Lightswarn which pushed achetype toolkits too high and phased out non archetype decks.
Then Blackwings came and pushed the special summon speed of the game too high.

The game after that has always lived on in a state broken by those three core concepts.

I fought Mitsurugi recently with traptrix/ and I genuinely cannot fathom how a deck like that can have any counter play I shut down 3 different plays that would let him put his dogshit purple cards on the field and yet somehow, SOMEHOW he still set a whole field, deleted mine and ended it there.

I would honestly just create YGO 2 that has mana costs but only for special summoning and quick effects. Setting traps and normal/tribute/ritual summoning monsters is completely free. The counterplay is running a more modern deck that outputs the level of fuckoff required to stop them a few more times while also having the same "can play through three interactions' thing going on.
Modern modern decks have been designed with the idea of playing through multiple negations so they can fuck over older decks and also play through "some" hand traps. And then powercrept their endboard to deal with said newer decks.

>The years between OG Chaos getting banned and the introduction of XYZ
>The games most popular and beloved years.
>"Killed" Yugioh.
You can talk all you want about Lightsworn being too OP, but it actually had a unique play style that showcased the games best feature, that it's lack of standard "resource cards" meant that decks were differentiated by what they used for a resource or what tradeoff they had for their abilities. Lightsworns gimmick of milling yourself to death or else your cards don't work is peak Yugioh. And the main deck monster besides Judgement Dragon actually contributed to the match rather than just being material for boss monsters. Even shitty decks like Watts had cool unique playstyles and themes that were fun (I personally want them to try Watts "suicide weak monsters into your opponent to weaken them" play style again and make it work). XYZ made it so every main deck monster is only worth what extra deck monster it can bring out. I will admit that Blackwings was a misstep in that it's central play style of swarming the field with "Blackwings summon Blackwings" effects was an issue insomuch as it was copied. The swarming was supposed to be what made Blackwings unique, making other decks able to do it like that missed the entire point. But even OG Blackwings still had main deck monsters that actually did things on the field besides serve as material, and their extra deck wasn't an omni-negate end board but meant to work in tandem with the main deck monsters.

TOSS was an incredible format. So much diversity in meta decks, and the meta decks weren't so powerful as to box out other, older decks like modern meta decks. Loads of old decks got Link support, and MR5 dropped to make the game even better. You could actually successfully run Burning Abyss due to Cherubini, Qliphort due to Genius, Gren Maju Gizmek, Trickstar, Invoked, Majespecter, Madolche, Mermail, Gouki, (nerfed) SPYRAL, (nerfed) Zoodiac, (nerfed) True Draco, Subterror, Rokket, and so many non-TOSS archetypes.

It was peak YGO where the power level was high enough that you could do a lot of fun degenerate shit but not so high that you win the game on turn 1/2.

Do you really think "Late DM" era distinguishes the fucking starter deck Yugi Kaiba meta of summoning La Jinn and Summoned Skull or are you that dense to conflate it with the GOAT format chaos meta?
Early DM is at the very least everything before Magic Ruler (Vol.1- Vol.7 in the OCG)

Yeah, but most of them are support cards for HERO, 'roids, Arcana Force, Archfiends, and Cyber Dragons. Oh, and Ojama.

https://www.tagforceguide.com/articles/tag-force-gx-new-cards

Tag Force GX is just a remake of Tag Force 3, so a handful of extra cards to make weaker strategies stronger is fine.

That's a slippery slope right there.

As a Yu-Gi-Oh protagonist how would you run your deck?

Random cards (Yugi)
90% Archetype (Jaden, Yuya, Yuma)
Archetype/Random Mix (Yusei, Playmaker)
>>
Is this the thread where I get to complain about the fact that Stellarnova Binding isn't searchable?
>>
>>749008629
I would 100% run a dual-archetype deck, like Madolche Vernusylph or Burning Abyss Phantom Knights

I'll accept Duel Masters-style Mana Charge but "you're not guaranteed to curveslop every game" is an important balancing factor in deck design. If you're regularly getting screwed/flooded then it's a deckbuilding skill issue. The opposite side of this is tutorslop games like Pokemon and YGO where winning hands are solitaire and are only beaten by equally broken interaction in the opponent's starting hand, which ends in just as many non-games as land issues.
>>
Lands are gay and lame. End of discussion.
>>
>>749008967
Land is a shit mechanic because Land is literally useless outside of enabling the other 2/3rds of your deck.

Ok yeah he made one good deck specifically to beat Yugi so he wouldn't lose the ceremonial duel. Overall his deckbuilding sucked ass and relied on perfect draws.
>>
>>749010241
>and relied on perfect draws
Did you even watch the show? It didn't rely on anything except Atem manipulating reality to draw whatever he wanted when he wanted it.

That is a factually correct statement, yes

I question how you can like ABC so much that you can rank a whole format a 9 despite basically half a year being zoo format.
In general i question why people particularly like ABC, deck is kinda white bread. Also in reality that is what the takeaway from that chart is; that most games would be ABC; the rogue deck section has mostly bigger outliers than usual than there really being more.
Kozmos is also pretty lame to me but i digress.

Its also wildly inconsistent logic because if you can just pick and choose the best format from these "eras" then the super low scores are also just you cherrypicking in the opposite direction and vice versa.
The implication makes your scores somewhat pointless really. Early Arc V did have formats that more or less line up with the exact same thing you are praising these formats for.

>Man, it's crazy how bad early ritual and fusion monsters were. And that on top of them being really hard to bring out because there were no decks built around properly interacting with the mechanics. Genuinely makes you think what the fuck they were thinking back then.

Fusion and Rituals were bad because the manga decided that they needed polymerization, two extremely specific monsters, or the ritual card while also largely keeping whatever numbers that Takahashi put on the cards. Takahashi wasn't constrained by how impractical it would be to use the cards because he could just write that the characters had them.

If the cards were properly balanced Fusion and Ritual monster back then would need to have better stats than Tribute Summons of the same level. But then Hungry Burger would have to be better than Summoned Skull and Zera the Mant would have to be better than Blue Eyes White Dragon which would break the early story/manga/anime which is what was selling the cards.

It's not really surprising how slapdash the game was (and still is lmao)
>>
>>748962424
I think the craziest thing to me was the fact that Polymerization was really rare, but all of the fusion cards were extremely common. I get that you want to have this iconic card be all nice and sparkly, but I knew absolutely no one that actually had a Polymerization, so we basically just played with house rules.

they should've done a MR earlier to resolve this
>>
>>749012078
Except the only rituals Takahashi made were Relinquished and BLS(and lo and behold one of them is on par with Blue Eyes). And he literally did make a non blue eyes fusion stronger than blue eyes; Valkyrion.
Which considering he barely made any fusions should say enough about how he felt about that.
>>
>>749012319
Oh almost forgot, masked beast exists too. You know, a card that literally fits the description; a ritual monster with ATK higher than blue eyes.

Albeit by battle city he also casually throws in death guardias who in the manga is literally just a normal ass tribute monster with 3300 ATK and floats on destruction. So anything was allowed to creep blue eyes in the manga.
