Was the Dreamcast really ahead of its time?
Yes and no.Online was cool but the fact is that people were not interested in arcade ports and arcade-style games by 2000. They wanted MGS, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy 7 and Gran Turismo. Games with long campaigns and deep progression or elaborate stories. Dreamcast didn't really deliver on the single player experiences that were dominating by the end of the PSX/N64 generation.
not in my opinion. as a kid i thought it was ps1 and n64 competitor. only years later learned that it was supposed to fight against ps2 xbox and gamecube. dreamcast was kinda joke compared to those. damn, the thing didn't even have 2 analog sticks.
I often think about alternate realities where the dreamcast gets it right and the dreamcast 5 is more popular than the switch 2 today
