Better take advantage of this while you still can before the lawyers get involved and the feature gets taken away like what happens every other time AI does something based that corpos don't like (RIP Elevenlabs)

>>
>>748966893
thank you saar!
>>
>>748967114
If it's decompiled, resulting in source code that produces a binary-matching executable when compiled that can then be modularized, decoupled, and reimplemented for other processing environments then that is a great step forward.

The problem is all we're getting are recompilations - games that are just the game you already played somewhere else but on a different platform with no upgrades beyond the nominal ones like resolution and framerate bumps.
>>
>>748967114
yeah, the one-off decomps are gay and meaningless. what i'm looking forward to is autistic modding projects with some actual content/gameplay. like diablo 2 is already super moddable with tard-friendly txt-defined coding, but with LLMs you can make it so the game is 100% txt defined allowing you to do anything just by filling out cells in a spreadsheet

I'm honestly surprised how quiet Nintendo has been concerning all this. Obviously streisand effect and such but they usually go right for the throat for these sorts of things.
>>
>>748967349
I've always thought they were leery of trying to provoke a suit in a situation they actually can't win because if some lawyer comes to the defense of their target and is willing to do it pro bono then they're probably fucked when it goes to court, resulting in a precedent that they'll never be able to get around down the line.

No one's using copyrighted Nintendo tools to do this, they're just taking advantage of resources that can unravel their products, meaning Nintendo has no legal recourse.

Does it count if you're using it to translate a disassembly that already exists to a modern programming language?
Because that's what I'm doing with a couple of NES games atm, it's pretty fun

Why do sloppers refuse to accept that they're polluting the Internet?

Whenever I call someone out on whatever egregious error I can identify I typically get a "tee hee, oopsie, just messing around and I guess I forgot to check!"

First off, the bubble will burst. There is no way around it.
Now, what does that actually mean? Besides tons of economic worries and some of the higher companies going caput? Probably not that much. AI is here to stay as a cancer.

There's gonna be some sort of incident that will finally reveal the dangers of AI to the world at large and the question is if it will be too late by then or not.

Noob here
Why are recomps more popular than decomps?
Surely decomps are the way to go? Why half-ass it with recomps?
Is there a new model or something that's enabling all this? I feel like decomps/recomps and emulators (and probably those Denuvo cracks too) have blown up in the past few months
>>
>>748968784
GPT-6 astra. And a static recomp doesn't require a 100% decomp to do, it just helps.

>>
>>748968784
decomp is turning the game's code into readable code to be compiled again for the original hardware, recomp is taking that code and porting it to somewhere (PC 99% of the time)
>>
>>748969068
huh interesting, thanks
>>
>>748968971
From my understanding
Recomps directly "translate" the code from one "language" to another. So, it isn't very modifiable and only translates in that one language
Decomps also "translate" too, but to actual, reable, modifiable code. That code can then be more easily "translated" to other languages/platforms.

>GPT-6 astra
I thought Claude was the new kid on the block and OpenAI models were "washed", as the kids say?
>>
>>748967687
Because you're likely giving it data from the game itself, which is illegal
You should be giving it source code
>>
>>748968784
>Why half-ass it with recomps?
It's quicker and literally all of these vibe coded recomps are just done for clout and twitter impressions. If you've actually tried any of these AI recomps that have gotten shit out in the last few months, almost all of them have terrible performance and run worse than just playing the game on an emulator. They don't actually care about making the ports good because there's no real passion behind these projects.
>>
>>748966893

I think the community is wasting its time churning out recompliations. AI-assisted decompilation is where it's at and one area I think anti-AI sentiment is actually causing a negative effect. AI-assisted decompilation should be where the energy is spent instead of these dime-a-dozen recompilations that aren't helping progress things the way they should be going.

People use it for the "mario in tekken" memery, but it's pretty cool that you can theoretically tangent from this into making proper asset extractors/converters for more obscure games. Weird how i haven't seen someone try that yet.
>>748967690
I give it 2 years until the memory shortage creeps into important equipment (Like medical or automotive industry) manufacturing contracts and the pushback comes from the actual major players rather than some insignificant nobodies crying about their PCs. Followed by ~5 years of economy rebounding from a crash that will follow once the AI companies fail to pay like 2 or so trillions of debt.

In other words, Soon(tm)

The odd part is that they're mostly derivative works of older games, games that only took a few years and a small team to make anyway. And now with all these advanced and AI tools available games are still slower to make and shittier than ever.

I think you actually can do a "Proper" (As in, it works like one, not necessarily good) recomp with AI tools, but it will require some manual code audit and knnw-how than just pasting renames into Ghidra and no one is just bothering with that because everyone wants to ride on the hype wave.
>>748968017
>>748968103
The thing with industrial revolution was, however, that skilled craftsmen could still translate their old pre-automatization skills onto new machinery since all the foundations were still the same. There was still economy-based bullshit happening all around, of course, but a skilled specialist was always a benefit to the mass production shop rather than a rudiment.
Hopefully this is how this ends, with actual knowledgeable professionals using AI tools as an aid to simplify their jobs, rather than the entire "Replace all humans lmao" bullshit Altman and Co. keep peddling. But that would also require a complete annihilation of india.

>>
>>748969931
I think AI could help a lot, the problem is people with programming talent to get the most out of it don't want to touch it.

Like this is a context-specific area where AI should be helping. It's not replacing your job, it's helping you do something that might have been out of reach without it.
>>
>>748970380
Fair point, only argument to that I can make is that it's still relatively new, so we'll see in like half to a year's time to see how things will change for gamedev in general. But for the time being we're still stuck with shit games that take way too long to make.
>>
>>748971162
honestly yeah but generally 7th gen and UP games really benefit from recomps. you can run them on toasters now if the dev did the work I.E. actually mapped the say 360 to native dx API.
