If it were to actually come out, would it even be able to rock the industry like the first two games did?

Dude, the game would be DOA, only boomers give a fuck about a colorless dogshit map with quiet protagonists and non existant gunplay.
>>
>>748967880
Let's assume it's an actual game and not another VR bs. Yes. The cult status, memes, modders and vtubers keep the brand alive.

>>748967880
anyone under 40 literally won't care. this isn't 2007 anymore.

>Waaaa its not troon slop hero shooter with bright colors and annoying protragonists this is for BOOMERS
Exactly it's for us who actually remember when this industry didn't suck shit. gtfo

>>748968462
Based anon. If they do it it cannot be VR again. Alyx was good and I enjoyed playing it but man VR is dead as fuck now and I don't think another one would be successful.

boomer melty kek

The first two games didn't rock the industry and had no impact on shooters.
They were seen as weird computer shooters that when ported to console were terrible to play and with even weirder titles and boxart than a japanese game.
>>
>>748970506
I bet you your favorite shooter only exists because of half life

boomers have all the buying power

The source engine has only been used for a handful of games and its engineers moved on, leaving the incapable in their place who couldn't figure out how to make a pie chart in TF2.
Can you tell me how Half Life contributed to all of Doom, Quake, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Red Orchestra, Red Faction, Sniper Elite, Helldivers, Far Cry, GTA, Fortnite, Metro, Bioshock, Aliens Colonial Marine, Killing Floor, Star Fox, Rainbow Six, Space Marine, Overwatch, Darktide, Fallout, Planetside, Lost Planet, Resident Evil, every last indie TPS/FPS forgotten over the years such as Sub Rosa, and so on and so forth?
The fact that melee attacks in source are just limited range gunshots is rather disappointing.

Zoomers don't leave the live service reservation so either way it would be entirely on how many Gen Xrs and millennials are still alive to buy Half-Life 3 either way.

Half-Life 1 and 2 both benefited from shooters being a relatively young genre. Outside of Goldeneye the year before there wasn't really something that had that marriage of gameplay and production values that Half-Life did. Quake had the technological angle of its engine, Duke Nukem had the realistic environments and larger than life hero, but nobody had successfully pulled off doing both until Half-Life.
When Half-Life 2 came out, shooters were already well on their way to replacing platformers as the dominant genre of the market, but it was still leading innovations in physics and presentation in a way many shooters still struggle to match.
But it has been over 20 years since Half-Life 2. Half-Life's innovations are as well-internalized at this point as Mario, Zelda and Resident Evil 4. The shooter is the king of the market. It is a highly mature genre to the point the most recent trend of the last decade and a half was just "remember what shooters were like before Halo" and we called it a boomer shooter.

It would rock the industry as much as Deadlock is doing mostly because at this point Half-life 3's only real novelty would be Valve actually bothering to make a game instead of just getting infinite money from running Steam. Half-Life 3's best time to come out would've been in the late 00s or early 10s when we were still neck deep in shooters that only played like Halo/COD. But by 2014 we already had the Shadow Warrior reboot and Wolfenstein The New Order, and the people that worked on the cursed Rise of the Triad remake were already well on their way to making other better games that would kick off the boomer shooter trend proper.

But shit at this point I'd just be happy for more throwback shooters that aren't just Doom/Quake 1/"lmao let's lock you in a room with a bunch of enemies like it's Serious Sam" games

Totally agree. It's at a point where there's not much they could do to push the medium as far forward as HL1 and HL2 did. I think Half Life Alyx was sort of their "solution" to that, if you could even call it that because the "solution" didn't really work. They clearly saw VR as the next big step for video games and it turned out to be mostly a passing fad that is still around but miniscule in comparison to what it was in 2018-2022.

I mean the elephant in the room that nobody will nor can acknowledge is that with the internet how it is now the release of Half Life 2 Episode 3/3 and by extension a usable Source 2 SDK, presumably, wouldn't materialize into anything really, y'know good. Because the internet is dead as fuck.
Like, yeah HL2 and the episodes is fun, but the real meat was that buying Half Life 2 meant you got a fuckton of games by extension since you got SDK access with it.
Even before Garry opened it up for Linux niggas (accidentally? he seems to profusely hate people that can make shit) by adding a lua extender on top of source back in 2005 I wanna say it was?

hl2 was a boring game.

>In an industry where virtually every game is shittier Counterstrike, Team Fortress 2, or the Culling where do you get off saying Half Life contributed to the industry

>TF2 made all these other games
>which are inferior to TF2
Even in your wildest fantasies, you're saying Valve ruined everything?

Half-Life was never a relevant franchise. HL 1 was quickly forgotten and only remained relevant because of the Counter-Strike mod. Copies of Half-Life were sold to play Counter Strike, not HL.
Half-Life 2 was a scam. Why? Simply put, it was created for Steam, and it required Steam to run. Its sole purpose was to force as many people as possible to install the client. Gabe Newell even used a highly dishonorable marketing tactic,a massive publicity stunt, that being the 2003 Half Life 2 "leak" (but it worked, so I can't blame him).Suddenly, Half-Life 2 became the most anticipated game ever, covered by every gaming website and magazine of the era. Gabe used HL2 as bait and successfully lured everyone into installing Steam. Imagine requiring gamers to install additional software and authenticate online just to play a singleplayer game in 2004. Gabe did it, and everyone praised him, thinking they were about to play the best game ever.
Therefore, Half-Life 2 was never relevant outside of marketing, publicity and brainwashing. The game is a tech demo, but not the kind you are thinking of. Half-Life 2 a tech demo for the Steam platform, meant to benchmark its servers, infrastructure, user experience, scalability, DRM...etc. "B-but what about the physics simulation in HL2?!" Naive dumb zoomers: the physics were handled by Havok, a physics sim engine already found in Xbox and PS2 games.
If not for the CounterStrike mod's popularity, Gabe would be fucked. If not for the Dota mod, he'd be fucked again. He got so damn lucky with the modding community literally handing him the holy grails of online gaming.
For Gabe, HalfLife 3 would only make sense as a SteamMachine exclusive to force idiots to buy his gaming PC, though that would likely backfire and outrage the community. Therefore, you ignorant fools must stop asking for HalfLife 3. Developing it has no purpose for Gabe other than pleasing delusional gaymers. He is here for the money, not to please you. He is an entrepreneur.

Gabe was a knife dealer before becoming a yacht dealer (and collector)
>>
>>748967880
when was the last time you played it?
half life 2 was shit
>>
>>748967880
no, because the barrier to entry to play it is to high. a steam machine and a frame costs over $2000 dollars. most people can barely afford food. we need to go back to the days when modern consoles cost $200
