Whether they're living creatures or not is still being discussed within the biomedical community as viruses clearly "fight" and evolve to survive within their hosts, sometimes even developing versions of themselves in which they DON'T kill the host.

There are several oceanic parasites that have no metabolism. The parasite is grown and born by the metabolism of its parent's host in an active state and if it doesn't find a host quickly it dies immediately. Once it finds a host it uses the host as an energy source to grow into it, control it, change its reproductive system to use its own, and so on.

>>retroviruses just infecting cells and never activating ending up only shoving junk down the cell's dna is so frequent that cells have entire janitorial systems to take care of the dumbfuck retarded dna influx in them.
Living organisms invest a fuck ton of energy into ensuring their genome remains stable both to counter viruses but also to prevent cancer. We can actually track the importance of these genetic repair functions in the evolutionary timelines and see that many organisms share the same processes of DNA repair because it was so important that it evolved very early on.

Why would we do that? Viruses are the #1 killer of bacteria on Earth. Killing off bacteriophages would do to the bacteria population what killing of spiders would do to wasps, smaller beetles, roaches, ants, locusts, etc.

It makes sense if you look at prions, they need to have this shape because they need to attach to a specific place in order to replicate

Life is full of things that replicate themselves but are not actually "active" in the biological sense, they just float around until they encounter the machinery they can infect. It's one way life might have started

Vaccines send a shitty, practically dead version of DNA or RNA which triggers and immune response. This immune response adds that DNA/RNA to its list of shit to kill on sight. As a result B-cells which are part of the immune system will begin pumping out anti-bodies, which act as signals for white cells, signalling to the white cells that they need to kill that shit.

A lot of countering a disease is detecting and responding to it. The reason why people die from it is because the body doesn't detect and respond to it fast enough.

Fun fact: mitochondria don't belong to you. The entire reason we can process food to make energy belongs to something that isn't us. We know this because mitochondria posses DNA entirely separate from human DNA. At some point in time in the distant pass early cellular life ate some other cell, failed to digest it, and in exchange for keeping it safe from the outside that mitochondrial organism produced energy. The bacteria in our gut are effectively the same thing, they are as much us as our mitochondria is, and our body knows this as women breastfeed their own gut bacteria to their babies to seed the baby's gut with necessary bacteria. Its the same reason why fake breastmilk results in babies with worse immune systems.

If you’re retarded, sure. Ilya Prigogine won the Nobel prize in chemistry for dissipative systems in the 70s. Proteins, RNA, and viruses are all a byproduct of that. We’ve even been able to model them on computer simulations using simple algorithms since the 70s. Try picking up a book.

They don't. A virus is fitted at one end with molecular receptors that allow it to attach to a specific type of cell and interface with the insides(mimicking the way the host cells share food and such). The viral DNA gets inserted into a cell's DNA. Then when the cell tries to replicate, it hits the virus DNA's instructions and instead of printing more cell DNA, it builds a copy of the virus DNA as well as the entire "body" structure for it. This then loops until the cell explodes and releases multiple copies of the virus to float around until they find another cell they're capable of attaching to.

>>
>>748977327
You're basically correct but I have a couple notes. Mitochondrial DNA is passed down through your mother, and we can actually track said lineage all the way down to the "mitochondrial Eve". And yes, the mitochondrial DNA is likely the result of some fucky-wucky plasmid transfer from some other smaller single celled organism which eventually evolved into an organelle (potentially via a bacteriophage a LONG fucking time ago). There's a similar phenomenon with chloroplasts, I think. There are a lot of segments in the human genome which are likely remnants of viral genomes which essentially do nothing and account for a lot of intron DNA which just gets spliced out during RNA generation.

As far as your gut microbiome goes, that's largely unique to the individual and what they're exposed to through their diet. A lot of that happens in utero. Natural breastmilk does indeed have benefits with regards to having a diverse microbiome which is kind of helpful for an immune system, but the main benefit for said immune system is actually the transfer of IgM antibodies in the milk.

they don't generate any type of energy themselves. They don't make ATP or utilize anything like glucose because they don't need it. They are purely parasitic and rely on the cell's organelles to replicate. They're detrimental to the host cell not because they literally stop it from working, but because they cause it to focus the mRNA and protein folding mechanisms into producing so many viruses that the cell literally explodes, shooting them everywhere. Your immune system fights this mostly by just fucking killing cells that are infected with the virus and trying to chemically neutralize any others that have a matching T-cell receptor. Shit's crazy

This combined with those instances of brilliant mathematicians finding elegant solutions or connections between almost every aspect of math to other fundamental physics stuff is why I'm agnostic as there is some design to the world. It could arise naturally but the question is, did it start on it's own or an outside force? And even if we consider it started on it's own, is the universe concious and experiencing life and slow decay since entropy is the natural state of existence? Like math is one of the few fundamentally true things in existence.

If you have only daughters as a man, or only sons as a woman, you kinda fail at that.
Then again once we unlock gene editing at an industrial scale (which is inevitable), passing on your genes is not gonna matter whatsoever so it was all kinda for nothing anyway.

there's basically zero empty space in a cell. They're extremely crowded, and everything is designed around having the maximum surface area to volume ratio. It's extremely efficient, actually. Ever wonder why the term oxidation sounds similar to oxygen? Its because oxygen is the ultimate electron acceptor in biochemistry. It oxidizes things, or in other words it takes electrons from molecules that it shouldn't. This stealing of electrons causes unintended reactions for the organism and can unbalance its processes enough to kill them. Anti-oxidants are such a meme thing in nutrition science because people want to counter this phenomena.

Monotremes are actually the most ancient form of Mammalian life. Placentals and Marsupials evolved much later. There are only 5 extant Monotremes left, though, and 4 of them are echidnas.

Minerals, not rocks, can look like that. Crystals in general follow pretty simple geometric shapes based on their molecular structure. Like quartz, for example. Oxygen is basically a shortcut for making energy. In anaerobic life, like some bacteria, 1 glucose produces 2 ATP. Compared with roughly 30–32 ATP when the glucose is fully oxidized aerobically.

His point in doing this is that most animals that "failed" the mirror test probably just didn't give enough of a shit to pass the benchmark in a noticeable way despite most likely recognizing themselves.

There has never been a recorded Orca attack on humans outside of captivity. The apex predator of the ocean, the one that kills great whites just to eat their livers and leave the rest to rot, is smart enough to acknowledge that humans will kill for revenge too.
They also just recently were recorded figuring out how to kill Blue whales. They literally drown them by holding them under water.

Its becoming increasingly clear that an animal that is smart enough to avoid humans on principle would be extremely difficult to actually document if its natural habitat is hard for humans to exist in. Colossal Squid, since they're so elusive, were only officially documented in the 90s and we only got a look at a live one in the last 10 years. There is every possibility that large marine animals that avoid humans are still out there. Related, cave systems are some of the least documented environments on earth.

This is true to a degree, but it's more likely to be small animals. Large animals need to eat more to sustain themselves and we'd pick up on it, especially in the ocean; the existence of colossol squid was inferred from scarring on whales a long time before we ever found one of their corpses. This goes doubly for caves because there's isn't much energy available down there in general.
The recent discovery of that cave that was completely filled with mosquitos and spiders, both of a previously unknown species, that constituted an entire microecosystem all to themselves is a pretty good demonstration of what you're getting at, though

Reminder that despite teaching primates hand-sign language, and parrots how to talk, there was only ONE instance in ALL of recorded history of an animal using language to ask a question: a parrot asking its owner what color it is. Not a single ape in captivity ever used sign language to ask humans something.
I just found that interesting.

>I remember reading about microbial life being found deep in rock where no one expected there to be any
That one is pretty crazy.
They're essentially extremophiles that can go decades in hibernation. They exist at the absolute limits of how far down we can drill to get samples. So there's really no reason they can't exist right up until it gets too hot for biology. Most of them are chemophiles of some sort, although I think I heard some of them are radiophiles, who metabolize radiation. And they exist essentially in cracks between rock.
Because the Crust of the Earth is so deep and expansive by volume, its estimated that pound for pound there is more life below the soil layer than there is on the surface of the earth. And its all dumb hibernating bacteria eating chemistry and radiation.

Not really a fair comparison.
Part of domesticated dog's evolution and breeding is being able to get along with humans, which necessarily means reading our facial expressions and mirroring them back at us to some extent. We have pressured dogs to be able to do that over hundreds of thousands of years of breeding.
We didn't do that for crows. Its not really surprising an animal that has not been bred to read another specie's facial expressions can't do it.

That being said dogs are best and goodest bois. Corvids are cool and lots of fun to interact with once they know you a bit. I like them both

Never implied otherwise. Dogs use large chunks of their brains for social interactions, and smarter dogs are able to socialize with plenty of other non-human animals as well. Crows exhibit the same behavior only to humans and wolves. Dogs (certain breeds) are capable of it with sheep, cats, humans, cows, goats, horses, and even other great apes.

FWIW, Orcas are even more capable, they're just assholes to everything that isn't a human or orca (unless they're feeling some kind of way about it, like mother orcas who adopt whale calves after losing their kids).

I think it’s simple. Genitals feel good when you sex. It feels nice to be with someone you like. You seek out relations that match up with a search image based on your parents and childhood peers. The imperative isn’t to reproduce per say, but your various biological systems conspire to help you do it. It happens enough times, those traits are favored, the lineage continues.
>>
>>748976856
This is going to sound like cope but why is sex ideally a lengthy act anyway? Wouldn't being an instant nutter let you reproduce more effectively? Especially if you think about struggling but not infertile couples who have to give it a good few tries. Surely slamming 8 creampies in a day is easier than trying every so often for weeks.
