Like many other hobbies and pastimes, gaming has become incredibly vapid and anti-social. There's obvious reasons like its decrease in physicality, not just in games as the methods to access these digitally improved significantly from the late 7th generation of consoles, but in conventions like E3 and a shift towards delivering these presentations through livestreams. Couch-coop is dead, dedicated game storefronts have either vanished completely or are on their last legs - remember when they would have actual consoles you could demo upcoming games on?

There's also a disputed point but one I think was incredibly important to the atmosphere and feel of the industry prior to the release of 8th gen consoles:

Gaming isn't cringe anymore.

There's a certain level of soul that's reached through being unpolished and corny that died out not long after the PS4 and XBONE launched. Corporate professionalism killed all the fun in the business.

From the outside, gaming was always viewed as the hobby of the social recluses, but actually it used to be incredibly social and community-driven. Buying a new game was a big event, acquiring a new console was euphoric.

Maybe my outlook and current life situation influences my view massively but these sets of circumstances and changes are true for everything. We're losing out on ways to be social.

you could simply try to be more social. go to game conventions or whatever. shitload of people in those. uncomfortably many. went in to local one in summer. it used to be pretty chilly maybe decade or more ago. but now it was like being in some kind of humancentipede.
>>
it was better than that 1 gen ago

It's a consequence of the internet bleeding into everything. People are too connected now and are purposefully becoming reclusive to protect their brains from the 24/7 stream of information overload.

I really never understood the hate for this era. I'm 38 years old. 7th generation was my favorite era of gaming.

I was definitely younger then but I don't know if I would call it my childhood, and therefore everything is better when you are a kid taking effect. I was 18 or almost 18.

The quality and variety of games was insane. The release cadence was nuts. We had trilogies come out. Mass Effect 1-3, Gears of War 1-3, Resistance 1-3, Uncharted 1-3, Dead Space 1-3, Lost Planet 1-3, etc.

I don't even remember what was on the ps4 or xbone, the unique games basically stopped after the ps3 and 360.

Once they figured out that they can charge you for internet access that you are already paying for anyway, it was over. Sure you can blame all the microtransactions, and lack of couch co-op, live service games, but I feel it all links back to paywalling access to what was already there.

people forget that iphone games started to make millions a day off of retarded normies around 2012. All of the creative energy was sucked from the industry when they realized way more could be made through predatory practices

Wasn't a good time for jrpgs and stuff like quake. So this board hates it.

>hate for this era
people hated 7th gen? I grew up with these consoles so I'm biased but aside from the early model teething issues and the motion gaming experiment that was really just a massive misstep, what was so bad about it?

You had 343's Halo attempts on the XBONE, I'm less sure what was so unique about the PS4 that was worth remembering.

I cant believe I forgot Dark Souls 1-3. I mean look at just FromSoft this gen. 4 Souls games, Ninja Blade, a couple Armored Cores and probably something else I dont know about.

Throw the Bioshock trilogy** and Assassins Creed 1-3 in there too the later is bloated and stale now but it was a cool thing to see at the time.

When I think 8th gen Red Dead Redemption 2, Resident Evil 2 remake, Bloodborne, and Gravity Rush 2 jump out first. And then I remember Driveclub, which still looks fucking insane at night with rain. I dont even know if you would consider it a good game but I like it.

And then after those 5 im just kinda left adrift double checking.

>No that came out on PS5 at the same time.
>No thats a 7th gen port.

8th gen had almost nothing in it, its wild. and half those games are from the last 2 years of it. real jokerfying experience to compare any one 8th/9th gen year with any one 6th or 7th gen year in terms of releases
>>
>>748978520
This was worst than the previous gen, it was the beginning of the end. All the trends that killed gaming today began here
>>
>>748979623
It was great as an adult with income but since most games were linear 10 hours games it sucked as a student, its the polar opposite nowdays since every game now is a bloated 60 hour open world game which hurts the backlog

7th gen was an absolute abomination.
