Without that opening you're liable to completely whiffAlso, deflect is sometimes not the optimal. Yoshitsune phase 1 has a three hit full screen slash combo. If you deflect the first 2 hits he will sometimes go into that annoying grab as the third one. Whereas if you dodge the first 2, he will always go into the final horizontal slash which is the easiest one to issen.
