It failed its previous audience, and it failed to gain a new audience. And the result is largely that older final fantasy fans simply look back on final fantasy as a largely dead franchise, and new final fantasy fans -don't exist-. Then they blew the second most important era in video game history (covid era) with 16, and here we are, a couple years later, nobody gives a shit about it save for people fondly remembering what once was.
