Etrian Odyssey doesn't work outside of the DS/3DS. It was designed for the dual touch screen and stylus.

Genuinely wonder what the fuck Sega/Atlus was thinking with the EO collection's price. Did they really expect people to pay $80 for 3 DS games and $40 for each separately? Only Pokemon could get away with some dumb shit like that

I got the games without really hesitating. But I understand that I must have been in a small minority.
But well. As a European, this was the first time that EO2 and EO3 have been officially released at all. And the idea of actually being able to own some official copies, while also showing that Europeans like this stuff too. I got it.
Besides. $80 for all three games, is a lot cheaper than the games were initially sold for at release. And since this was kind of the first European release to begin with. It didn't feel that out of pocket.

And what's more. These games hold up. If they were worth that kind of money way back when. Then they aren't really worth less today. The games are hardly worse now.

>>
>>749003030
It's still baffling that they went with the originals instead of the ones like Millenom Girl and Fafnir, I bet they even have all the bugs and broken skills of the original releases too.
>>
>>749010317
>muh QoL
They're all playable. EO1 on the DS was just unbearably slow but that was fixed with the HD remakes.
>>
>>749011312
because they're completely different games from those remakes
they did some minor bug fixes and balance changes but nothing too big. Mostly just getting rid of the literally do nothing skill points and for some reason they buffed the charge skills in 3
>>
>>749003030
I paid 40 bucks for all that...
>>
>Ordered all 3 games
>Every key is marked as "Worldwide"
>1 and 3 redeem just fine

What the hell is Steam talking about?
>>
>>749010790
>If they were worth that kind of money way back when. Then they aren't really worth less today.
Nope, not really how it works. Especially when you have lots of other old collections getting released these days to compare them too. Megaman Battle Network Collection for example was $60 for 6 games, not counting the split versions separately, and that's with online trading and battling added for EVERY game. Even if you only buy vol 1 or 2 of the pack, it's still $40 for three games compared to EO's $40 for 1. Not to mention the MM Star Force Collection, another pack of DS games, that was also priced at $40 for 3 games. Castlevania Dominus Collection released at $25(!!!) as well.
No matter how much you like EO, you don't have to defend bad pricing and let Sega get away with dumb decisions because you feel like you need to always defend a series you like. You have to know your market and they didn't which is why the collection underperformed. You'd have to be a dedicated EO fan to even consider that price tag and it scares away new players because most aren't going to take a chance on such expensive games that they aren't sure they'll like.
>>
>>749011474
Same here. Support replied pretty quickly at least. Hopefully they'll send me a working key because I don't want that EO2-shaped hole in my library.
>>
>>749003030
Out of these old ones, only 3 is any good
>>
>>749011516
All I'm really saying is that these games weren't really old in Europe. Since they had never been officially released there.
>>
>>749003030
Bought EO1 on Steam, but never installed it because apparently it has the same Denuvo problems that all SEGA games has been having since 2010.

Will buying this from Loaded make it Denuvo-free?
>>
> charge more than what the originals cost
> there's still just mostly static sprites, and no additional content from the 3ds versions
> well no one's interested in the series. Time to bury it again
I hate Sega so fucking much
>>
>>749011959
No, but there are denuvo-free versions out there, because some intern fucked up on day one of the steam release and they were released without Denuvo at first
>>
>>749011959
I've been playing EO1 HD for weeks and have never noticed denuvo and I have a potato. I would have no idea it had it if people didn't bitch about it.

its a game of averages.
you can always buy on 100% legit sites and always get what you want 100% of the time at a higher cost or you can get shit three to ten times cheaper on these sites and maybe run into issues at some point.

its kinda like using aliexpress. I dont care that much if I lose out on twenty bucks when I overall save hundreds over the years.

part of the code says what region its for.
you will probably want a RoW (rest of world) key. when the site says only for EU then it wont work for you but they might offer keys for your region (or world wide).
there are other keysites that have it for cheap too I always check allkeyshop.com its a search engine for keyseller sites.

key websites buy keys in bulk for a discount directly from the publisher. They also use region fuckery to get even bigger discounts.

So every legit key out there was purchased and some money does go to game creators/owners. If publishers felt screwed by these sites they would simply stop selling keys to them but when someone asks to buy 5k keys I guess it's hard to say no.

>>
>>749023589
Yeah but I actually genuinely enjoyed my time with 3 all the way through. 1st stratum was a little tough, especially since I had a ninja that wasn't too useful other than escaping random battles so I essentially was working with 4 party members till I unlocked subclassing. EO2 is just kinda miserable in the early game. So much warping back because of bullshit, on top of having what feels like having a smaller TP pool. That sidequest where you have to stay in the labyrinth for 3 in-game days was so ass, I also did that on picnic difficulty. The reward wasn't worth it at all.
>>
>>749009147

its atlus, the superbosses fucking suck just like smt. they cannot design bosses, they can only design puzzles and you need to do x/y/z on x turn or you auto lose. the eo1 superboss is no different. played it last year, pushed myself to kill the 3 post game dragons at least, but cannot be fucked playing the atlus puzzle, its not fun and it doesn't even feel rewarding or enjoyable when you win because of the way they design shit. beat smt5 last year too, same shit there.
all you gotta do is see that the cute samurai and hexer are okay and alive back in town after the incident and then you've seen what the game has to offer
>>
>>749016517
The post game up to the super boss is my favorite part of every EO game. Almost every single superboss is aids
>>
>>749003030
EO I is a decent crawler that you'll really appreciate down the line. The tone is fairly unique, more Sark Spire than Etrian Odyssey.
EO2 has some of the most aesthetically pleasing dungeons in the series, and made titanic steps when it comes to party building. It's also the worse game in the series and its side content isn't worth doing.
EO III is the one you should play if you're only going to play one. Legit in the top 10 dungeon crawlers of all time, incredible game.
EO IV is the best dungeon crawler ever made, though a bit too easy.
EO V would be the best dungeon crawler ever made if EO IV didn't exist.
EV Nexus is a titanic diamond in the rough. Play every game before it.
The Untold games are a but mediocre, though the second one is pretty decent if you don't do its story mode.

Probably been talked to death, but are the remasters better or worse than the originals? Are they pretty much just the original games in 16:9 that respect the original artstyle or to they '''improve''' the graphics and censor dialogue ect.

Obviously they aren't going to have touch screen controls or a second screen, so there's not point mentioning that.
>>
>>749025667
Even if you play the classic mode, pretty much all FOE and boss encounters were turned into puzzles, the boss having huge health pools you aren't actually supposed to try to take on, you have to reduce them by dropping them in a hole or hitting them with missiles without being caught beforehand. Some people don't like that but I do appreciate that they tried something different.

playing the game is playing the game, walking around, looting, fighting stuff, going back to town, levelling up, buying equipment. 'playing the game' is not "place the doors on the map btw you have no need to ever return to this door either its purely for ocd purposes" anon sorry
and mapping gets exponentially worse the further you progress, anyone who mapped out the post game stratum in eo1 beyond its 1st or 2nd floor instead of just looking up the map is a circus clown. you have genuine mental problems if you are like "i need to map out this teleporter maze, i need to map out every tile when 80% of this floor is tiles that drop you down a floor", just simply stop being ocd and dont do that

They're interesting enough dungeon crawlers.
The big twist is that each region has an FOE that will occasionally spawn near you and operates in semi-realtime while you still work in turn-based.
It ten chases you until you evade it or defeat it somewhat in battle, but it will respawn after a time because each one is also the final boss of the region.

I think the redo in 2 cut an element, rebalanced things to be a bit easier, and cut the dungeons WAY down. They're fuckhuge in the original version.
But I've only played the remake version

Etrian Odyssey died with the rest of the Japanese AA industry when handheld consoles were discontinued. It wasn’t because Etrian Odyssey mechanically cannot work without the 3DS’ dual screens (the collection already showed that). It’s because games like Etrian Odyssey needed an environment like handheld consoles provided to thrive. An environment just for lower budget games where they can be sectioned away from higher budget AAA games. The moment handhelds like the 3DS and Vita died and these games were forced onto HD console platforms to compete with the AAA games being sold at similar prices it was over, the ballooning dev costs priced them out. Now unless you sell them for pennies you get people like in this thread calling them shovelware or a ripoff because they are being sold alongside Breath of the Wild and GTA. Meanwhile, mobile gacha games took over the space that A and AA games used to fill by providing a similar environment. Except that quickly got crept out too by Chinese companies shitting out giant AAA MMOs disguised as gacha games and now Japanese companies are just stuck because Japan is too poor, old and traditional to be able to scale up to the level of China and their colossal labor pool.

It's cruel how a company can release a legitimately fun game on Switch, price it at $40, just like a handheld game and then have it either be shat on or ignored because it doesn't meet expectations of what an HD console game should be.
The Switch 2 doesn't help the situation either, not any future portable PS6

>>
>>749034848
Let's be real Japanese devs have always been complete dogshit at pricing because they're far too used to the pre-mainstream days where an IP could justify itself simply by pandering to the type of people who spend hundreds of anime girl figures. That doesn't cut it anymore but they still insist on pricing games that way so you get these niche games costing $40-60 and they're getting absolutely fucking demolished by indie shit at a fraction of the cost.

>The Switch 2 doesn't help the situation either
Nintendo with the Switch 2 is actively making it worse, in fact. They are very clearly trying to market it as an alternative to the PS5 and Xbox, moving back to competing more directly with them by trying to market the Switch 2 as AAA-capable with games like Cyberpunk as launch titles and the push for more “realistic” Unrealslop styles in Star Fox and the Ocarina of Time remake. I suspect this is also partly the reason they’ve returned to censorship and policing content on games releasing on their consoles again. Can’t let the FIFA and GTA audience see some anime tiddies or lolis, after all. Contrast with the Switch 1 where at least at the beginning they were very obviously trying to position it as a successor to the Vita and scoop up the Japanese AA/otaku audience that Sony abandoned to become the western AAA machine including deliberately counterplaying Sony’s own censorship policies by publicly stating they wouldn’t censor games on Switch. Which is all disgustingly ironic in hindsight as evidently they decided Sony had the right of it after all and as soon as the Switch was on top they immediately moved to throw the Japanese AA audience under the bus the same way Sony did.

Most EO has the same pitfalls as most other dungeon crawlers, once you learn of or stumble upon the really broken stuff it makes the games a breeze unless you willingly avoid it, but doing so usually makes some classes unplayable.

Loaded is a grey market, not black market. They don't do shit like sell keys that potentially used stolen cards. What they do is purchase keys directly from developers, but from countries with way lower prices like third world countries. But often times developers just sell them international keys, which means they can immediately resell the keys to other people for higher (but still discounted) prices. In other words its not illegal, its not risky but it is kinda scummy since you're essentially ripping off devs from getting their "potential" profits.

Entry level is either ToHeart: Dungeon Traveler or Dungeon Travelers 2. I don't recommend 2-2 as entry point as it's the last entry and it builds off a what-if ending to 2. ToHeart: Dungeon Traveler uses characters from ToHeart 2 and is a standalone story. All 3 games have a pretty basic story to them but TH:DT is its own thing and leans some on knowing the ToHeart 2 characters. Personally I started with DT2 on the vita release and then played 2-2 and then went back to TH:DT years later. It's hard to say which is my favorite because they all play similarly but have different balance quirks to them that I both liked and disliked. They are all some good dungeon crawler games though.

I remember reading that Dungeon Travelers 2 was deliberately designed as an entry point because the first entry wore its nature as a ToHeart spinoff on its sleeve and after people praised it as a dungeon crawler in its own right they made a sequel that was lighter on the ToHeart connections.
>>
>>749040301
That isn't really a problem though. The problem is that (you) immediately run to gamefaqs and look up the best builds and then complain about the game being too easy. Meanwhile the game is balanced around the player not knowing everything and playing suboptimally while figuring things out slowly.

Yes it was. 2 is a great entry point, I recommend it. And you can always go back and play 1 later if you get addicted. Other than sharing some art of the monstergirls with 1, there's really no major connections and it was intended to be a standalone world. 1 is basically just an isekai for the girls of ToHeart and it doesn't try to pretend to be anything deeper than that.

None of those are really “recent”. The Labyrinth of Refrain/Galleria games and Mary Skelter 2 all came out during the twilight years of Japanese AA games, the late 10s at the tail end of the PS4 life cycle. Both were console sequels to games on the Vita. The fact that they were not followed up on (except Mary Skelter Finale which was the last game Compile Heart did in that style) tells you all you need to know. Just look at Compile Heart and NIS’s recent catalogs, it’s all garbage “general audience” games made with the intention of attracting a western audience.

Quite a few but admittedly I haven't finished many because a lot of them are way too archaic for my tastes. I really hate the system where random battles can range from two slimes to an entire fucking circus including the animals and jugglers. If you can realistically take on a battle against 20+ enemies then battles against 3 feel trivial but if those smaller encounters are tuned to be moderately difficult then the massive encounters are something you just run from or die to. I have yet to see it pulled off in a balanced and interesting way and I'm glad EO never pulled from that shitty idea.

No shit the entire concept of "worth" when it comes to fiscal sense is subjective. A guy making minimum wage is going to have a different concept than a guy making 200k a year. The real question is if they are worth your time and fuck yes they are if you like the genre

slow as fuck and loves spamming unavoidable enemies around you (normal encounters are piss easy and stop giving good amounts of exp early into a new floor so most of the time they just slow you down for no reason)
every single boss and endgame enemy is immune to spells what kind of retarded design decision is that
tried the tl patch for 0
10 minutes into it I've seen absolutely no improvements either so I just dropped it
no wonder Atlus is so popular they're the only ones that managed to actually improve the genre
>>
Bought EO2 after finishing the base game of EO1. What am I in for?
>>
>>749051605
Untold 1 and 2 aren't enhanced versions, they're brand new games following the same skeleton.
U2 is arguably the most busted game in the series, but it's more so about the kinds of absurd setups you can do rather than "revenge curse was accidentally way overtuned"
It also honestly has some of the weakest random encounters in the series, though half the bosses are borderline designed like a 6th stratum boss so it balances out a bit.
Really though comparing these games on a metric of difficulty is retarded, I could find EO4 to be the hardest where most people say it's the easiest just because I didn't use one of the usual suspect team comps that make it so easy.
Nexus is the easiest though since half the class roster is overtuned and all the content is undertuned

This post just reminded me of how often I get cucked out of beating the super super bosses with my campaign team because I fuck around and use silly team comps, so when I get to the endgame I don't have the required amount of something or other and get fucked. Like in U2 when Ur-Devil decides to fuck you sideways if you choose to bring both a Protector and a Beast, or Nexus' boss spamming adds I couldn't deal with, if I recall. Never wanted to go back and re-do my party for that shit either. Maybe I'll do another run of Nexus and see this time. I never did actually use Hero in any of my parties, so that might be fun.

Play Potato Flowers in Full Bloom.
>>
>>749050014
it's marked early access but it's a full 5 stratums with 5 floors each + a 5 floor post game like most of the etrian games. It's a shit game and I wouldn't recommend playing it, but it's not really unfinished.
What I heard is that the original kickstarter learned a lot more on the yuri aspect when it's basically irrelevant to the game so the devs got a lot of flack for that. Which should have been expected for a game where you make your own party of generic characters.
>>
>>749053085
you're not getting cucked out of anything
the superbosses are just poorly designed just like every atlus superboss ever and I'm starting to believe it's on purpose to pad out the game with grinding
hell the entire postgame of every EO is just padding considering how bad the exp curve usually is
>>
>>749052659
The pattern is always the same. The RNG manipulation is for other shit

Good post.
I'll always treasure my collection of mid-budget, AA Japanese games on 3DS and PSP, but they really just don't exist anymore these days.
>>
>>749023945
Zoom zoom.
Old dungeon crawlers didn't even have a map and you had to either look up a guide someone else had drawn or draw it yourself as you played.
EO's entire map gimmick is to reference that and one of it's actual selling points.

>>749053559
I think Warped Savior was the only super-super boss I actually liked.

Mapping the dungeon yourself is one of the main appeals of Wizardry which EO is based on. Slowing marking the map bit by bit is relaxing and very satisfying when you look at your stack of hand written maps of the entire dungeon after you complete the game. It doesn't matter that you never return to a specific door ever again it's the process of mapping that's fun.

You don't get it because you're zoomer secondary who never played Wizardry but the japs who made EO did and they love it.

People gotta mind their own finances too. If you wanna donate money to the devs, there’s probably other means to do so, though I wouldn’t recommend it because most likely it’s just going to SEGA who are gay and pozzed as fuck and probably put Himukai on a blacklist after Twitter cancelled him for his loli-esque Lucina design in Fire Emblem Heroes. Can’t be seen as a diddy blud company when you’re sucking up to gaijins, after all.
>>
>>749029909
It's mid honestly. It has some style and weirdness to it which makes it interesting. Also some light fanservice elements since it was a vita game.

Unfortunately the first game on PC has a memory leak and the game consistently crashes after running for a couple hours which sucks. I lost progress many times.

He has done several games for sega since you retarded culture warrior. Hell he has done stuff for Nintendo since

Twitter isn't as relevant as you think, specially when it comes to westerners trying to cancel japanese artists.

They got me into dungeon crawlers. Easy enough for beginners while still enough to keep you on your toes and rethinking your team comps on Nightmare difficulty. 2 also has a very good and emotional story. They are easily among Compile Heart’s best games if not their best period. They really never put this mich thought and depth into a game’s setting again. I found myself surprised at how well the fairy tale theming is used. Unfortunately it kinda starts to fall apart by Finale which is easily the weakest game in the trilogy.

You may not care about the culture war, but it sure cares about you and the games you play. Himukai is far from the only case.
>>749055690
Twitter is definitely more relevant than you think. It’s the fucking town square of the internet. Companies use it as a gauge of public opinion. Are you just going to pretend there isn’t a controversy over lolis or fanservice every other week or that Japanese companies haven’t been toning down their content for the west? But sure, keep burying your head in the sand and pretending everyone taking notice of these trends is a “culture warrior”. Here’s a tip for you; participation in the war is not optional. Everything you like will be affected whether you acknowledge it or not.

you are dumb mates sorry
i played M&M2 and never drew a single map, i played shining in the darkness and never drew a single map, i played phantasy star and never drew a single map. it was never "part of the fun" it was just a test of your memory. at least in m&m your mapping had more purpose. i am not a zoomer, i played games relatively shortly after their release as a child that you were not even born for most likely, you just have no convincing argument formulated so this is a standard comfortable fallback for you.
>>
>>749056258

I feel like it's my duty to teach these young bloods the way of sales because I know they're all broke. I can count on my fingers the number of times I bought from steam directly in the past 5 years, because Keysites are always cheaper.

Listen up kiddos. Bookmark a price agregator site like gg.deals or isthereanydeal and check there for game prices for older games, especially durring steam sales, because third worlders take advantage of steams regional pricing to bulk up on cheap keys that can be redeemed world wide and then sell them for a price that yields a small profit while still massively undercuting the listed price in, say, America. Also for brand new games that you absolutely want to play on release day, consider pre-ordering from official key sellers like Greenmangaming for fanatical, they typically knock off 18% or more from the launch price, pocketing only 12% for themselves whereas Steam keeps the whole 30% cut. They pass the savings to consumers to take traffic awatly from steam, it's totally legit. The biggest downside of buying from Keysites is that once you redeem the key, you can't get a refund, either from Valve or the key seller, and sometimes, but very rarely, the keys were bought with stolen credit cards and once those charges get voided the keys stop working. This happened to me once on G2A, but never again.

Its been 16 years since Etrian 3. You would think that someone has made a better or at least equally good Dungeon Crawler since then. Some have tried but all of them failed horribly. Our best bet and only hope is for AI gen shit to become so good that the one in a billion game will actually be IT. Until then we pray.

>Our best bet and only hope is for AI gen shit to become so good that the one in a billion game will actually be IT. Until then we pray.
I'm considerably retarded but I'm currently in the process of using claude to help guide and teach me how to make stuff in a way it understands and how I can convey what I want to make plus I'm gonna be having claude make tools I can interact with in order to potentially make a game. My thought process right now is to make something similar to Wizardry Daphne except without the gacha because I like the idea of seeing the 3d models run in and perform attacks. It's just a shame that Daphne had the right idea but went the gacha route, even though technically you don't need the gacha but the cool characters and weapons are locked behind it. My plan is to figure out how to do animations myself and use claude as a supplement to finalize my idea. How long this will take though? No idea because I'm not rich and I can only afford the $20/m plan without buying extra usage so I'm limited by the amount of tokens I can use weekly

SEGA and the vast majority of the Japanese industry doesn’t make AA games anymore, see >>749033409
So never. Those games are pretty much gone. Pray for a collapse that kills off AAA development and forces the industry to downscale back to 2000s levels, that’s the only way they’ll come back. Until then, it’s just soulless AAA slop, indieshit or gachacuckery.
