do thermal paste brands even matter
>>
Nah, it's like asking if pasta brands matter
>>
does thermal paste expire
>>
>>749003273
The differences between brands are negligible.
>>
>>749003273
As long as you're not getting some third rate shit from Temu you should be fine with anything. It's less about what brand of thermal paste and more about how you apply it.

Barilla or nothing

I've never had to reapply paste made by arctic even after 10+ years. The same can't be said about whatever shit paste most video card manufacturers are using.

Not really, and you replace it whenever you feel the need to, computers generally should downclock and in worst cases power off if they were to get close to overheating

Since it's mostly water, cum should be a pretty good thermoconductor until it dries, right? The point of thermal paste is that it maintains its thermoconductivity over a long time.
So it should be a viable and affordable thermal compound, as long as you reapply on a daily, or maybe twice daily basis.

It works like a regular-to-bad" paste. A good paste has better performance for sure but at least you don't have to raplace the pad ever.

At the very least you have to get some canned air and carefully blow dust out of it every 6-12 months, but it's also good to replace the cooling goop every 1-2 years.
>>
>>749010378
>hard to apply
its super easy if you keep it cold. just store it in your butter drawer or something.

>hard to clean
you wot m8? i personally find it easier than some other pastes because it stiffins up and comes off in bigger flakes rather than just being a goopy mess when you use an alcohol pad

>price:performance being mid
its a solid thermal solution, its just not the best. the main factors for ptm is longevity and knowing you're going to get 100% coverage without having to spread it or any shit.

No, its not going to be like liquid metal or whatever in cooling performance, but its within a couple degree delta of other compounds with basically no drawbacks. sounds like you have a skill issue.
>>
>>749004684
I remember a time when people did things for fun instead of for online clout.
>>
>>749012010
1-2years is retarded. on average you're really looking at 5+ years before you start thinking about it and thats *if* you start noticing cooling issues/thermal throttling.

For most people the most maintnence you need to do on a fully air cooled system is blow compressed air over your fans and cooling tower and clean your case air filters (if you have them) every 6mo or so.

Basically everything else else falls down into repair category, like if your fans start squeeking or whatever and needing to replace them.
>>
>>749003481
Depends how you store it. I still have thermal paste I bought back in like 2009 or so that is as fresh as the day I bought it but I use it on cheaper stuff I own now and bought some Arctic when I built my current PC a year or so back which will probably last the rest of my life at the rate I'm going through it.

Buy good components that won't hit stupid temps would be the first thing to do.
PTM7 whatever the fuck is not that good for temps, it's there for durability. It's so you set and forget, for laptops, handhelds and such.
If you need thermal pads just grab the arctic ones since these you can actually stack if you can't find the right measurements.

people do this but you void your warranty.
you have to remove the built in heat spreader for direct-die cooling, it's a total pain in the ass and barely a marginal improvement on most CPUs.
and you still have to rely on thermal paste because soldering your CPU to a cooler is just not practical and it'd probably end up cracking off from thermal expansion cycles or something.

Agree with the sentiment but the video doesn't prove shit. When you are screwing in the cooler screws corner by corner it's not the same as just placing carefully a flat surface on top, the shaking and jittering while you are screwing will inevitably make smudges and air bubbles.
>>
>>749020000
that's why all the screws have springs on them to apply constant even pressure.
this video is old as hell anyways, the actual proven most consistent way is to just spread a thin layer across the entire surface.

>I never build a PC myself and don't plan doing so. Just ordered from those sites where you choose your parts and they set everything up for you.
No offense, but I think that people like you shouldn be forced to use Apple Macs.
Anyway, you could slather the board itself in thermal paste and it would be fine. Probably a bunch of us have leaked thermal paste into the CPU pins.

Nah Apple is gay. I'm good on my 5080, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64 GB DDR5 RAM setup. Don't need to waste my time learning how to and then building it myself.

Yeah they matter, the paste needs to cure within a couple days, and after it does, it needs to maintain a consistent temperature as a thermal bridge to the CPU and the cooler.

The brand of paste will determine how much time, diligence and testing went into discovering those numbers.

What if I do both dots AND lines?

>>749021668
Too much paste, it will spill over.
Not necessarily a problem on modern CPUs, but if the paste outside the socket will dry up and turn into a bitch to remove.

This guy gets it.
There is thermal paste that is a few degrees better, but it will last less. For example, a Noctua paste is only a good paste in the first year. Others work better. But it will perform better in year 3. So it really depends how often you plan on changing the paste.

>xe doesn't give xer computer a feminine name so inserting a power cable or a thick load of thermal paste aren't gay
Mine is called Sapphire.
>>
>>749003273
not really since modern processors aren't running as hot as back in the day
if anything GPUs need repasting more often for optimal performance

>apply less volume of paste to cpu
>it covers less when squished out
WOWZERS I THAT REALLY SURPRISED ME!!!!! WHO WOULDVE KNOWN THAT LESS PASTE MEANT LESS COVERAGE
>>
>>749023412
if only that were the case for my 3900x. fucker idles at like 50-60c according to core (tctl/tdie) even with a graphene pad with a noctua u12p. compared to my 3570k with a d14 and thermal paste I haven't changed in probably a decade that idles at like 25-30.

I use one of these graphite sheet pad things. Kinda nice to never have to buy and apply thermal paste ever again.

Just don't buy cheap chinkshit. That's literally the only rule.
>>749003481
Kinda but it will "just" get slightly worse and you should replace the paste once every few years anyway.

For me, it's the humble Raos
If you're a Bottle King Member both the pasta and the sauce go on sale constantly.
Also the whole grain Barilla is pretty good

He's just a fucking idiot. I always do the initial "push" onto a piece of paper to avoid shit like this, then after I've gotten like 2 inches out I apply it

Yeah but you can take the pad from PC to PC. It survives upgrades

That happens a lot. Unless you can really make a specific dish spectacular with ancient chinese techniques, a lot of dishes are pretty much about as good as store-bought. Definitely not everything though, nothing beats fresh bread or sauces (if made right)
