Probably because he didn't keep at it like Kojima did. Nor did he put himself out there as some Auteur like Kojima.Plus people often overexaggerate how much of those games success was Sakaguchi's involvement which also muddied Kitase's legacy.
Jap games, even Kojima's, are design by committee crap. Praising one man for them is retarded.
To be fair I didn't know who Sakaguchi was until Spirits Within. Kitase didn't have any big flare ups to make people notice I guess. And Nomura, Matsuno and Uematsu were always the talk of the community.
