MGS4 was kind of a weird thing at launch but it was one of the killer apps for the PS3. Of course, it helps that it had MGO2 to be the real gameplay main course after you effectively run the story like it's a training grounds prep. It's a lot of hindsight that people rounded about on how stupid the plot and its attempts to tie everything neatly in a bow became. Making it more broadly accessible does mean people can just even shit out in opinions now with people having more than just Youtube access or RPCS3.

Generally the game was liked on release. The biggest complaints were that the game went waaaay too far in the direction of cutscenes over gameplay, and a lot of people were left sour by the last cutscene in-particular.
