>>749012814
It'll happen to you no matter what because the cable and connector cannot handle the voltages being drawn. The angry pixies do not care if you plugged it in right or not, the only thing this changes is how much easier it is for them to escape and cause Expensive Sounds and Smells.
>>
Reminder you can underclock and reduce power usage by 20% while losing sub 1% performance
>>
>>749012960
That won't stop the spikes though which are usually what causes this.

i'm pretty sure most modern high-end cards don't take up only 2 pcie case slots of space, a card with an inbuilt power supply would probably take up like 4 at least

>>
>>749014581
>>749012960
The only way to stop it as an end user is to limit it to ~96w.
That way even if ALL of the current was running over a single conductor (which can happen with 12v high failure rate connector) it would still be within spec. (8A per conductor)
>>
>>749012814
Thermal cycles will inevitably shift it enough to cause a disconnect in some wires. Every 12VHPWR will burn down unless actively monitored, the only question is when.
>>
Yeah. Nigger ass, might get whitey whipped sometime next menerashon. So too pcie. Slots and power conectors.

All new and incompatible with people's boring mothers boarding at their hose or not.

Either return to horizontal PC cases like the Apples or IBMs of olde, or make vertical GPU mounting the new standard.

The idea is that the cables which come prepackaged with the PSU are sometimes faulty and the sensors do not activate quickly enough to power down components, creating fires.

With custom PSU cables you might not have to worry about that problem.

https://www.techpowerup.com/352658/asrocks-tempguard-failed-to-stop-a-psu-side-connector-meltdown-on-a-usd-15-000-rtx-pro-6000-rig
>>
>>749023363
The cables aren't the issue and never have been - it is the connector itself. No matter where whatever is glued to the connector comes from the failure point remains the same.
>>
>>749014717
First time hearing this thermal cycle shift thing
Any reads on this?
>>
Why not solder them?
>>
>>749023363
Its the connector design you fucking retard no replacement cable will fix it, they have to redesign the fuckin thing and don't care enough to do so because ai literally prints them money
>>
>>749023458
In this case, the connector shorted out on the PSU side, saving the video card from harm, but obviously the header and the cable are going to be one and the same. It's unusually hard to separate the two once built.

This wouldn't work, a blackout or sudden short in the house's power would kill your card, I think.

I've been using/gaming, and building my own, PCs since the 90's. This has only ever happened once and not with the GPU, but the an ASRock motherboard and some no-name (if I recall correctly) PSU. The fucking thing just melted into the motherboard. It was over a decade ago now, I think.

Blaming the connector is retarded but Nvidia's implementation requirements for their high-TDP GPUs were clearly subpar. If they told the OEMs so, every 5090 would have had to come with proper load balancing.
>>
>>749028591
If it is nvidia's fault and not the connector how come some 9070xt's have melted too?
>>
>>749023459
Plastic expands and contracts when heated like many other materials
This will eventually shift the connector out of place enough to cause a loose enough connection that allows the connector to fail and burn down your house when the power draw spikes.
>>
>>749018852
it's nearly 100% effective at preventing damage to your hardware and money well spent if you have an expensive gpu

>>
>>749031184
I only have a 5070ti but I don't worry. To get to the same currents you see on a 5090 about 50% of all pins would have to fail completely which is very unlikely.

>>749030452

Rookie numbers.

Why did they create this instead of just having 3 or 4 PCI-E cables go into the GPU? Wouldn't that be safer.

>>
>>749035995
No load balancing on the gpu side (the 3090 had it though) so the card doesn't know how it is receiving power only that it is so once you get a substantial change in resistance on any pin(s) the ones with lower resistance will feed as much power as the gpu requests. With thermal cycling you WILL eventually have uneven power draw and get to the point like these examples where only a couple pins are handling 600w rather than it being distributed across all of them and which point they get so hot and melt.
