Now that the dust has settled, was it deserved?
>>
>>749020031
Way too high. Tendies will never admit the franchise was already of a downhill trend then that was only broken by BotW.
>>
>>749020460
>open empty world with nothing to do
>hundreds of identical pointless POIs (you found me ya ha ha)
>weapon breaks after 3 swings
BOTW sucked.
>>
3D Zelda peaked here, so it should've been 10.
>>
>>749020626
>nothing to do
>but it's also filled with POIs that don't count!

Get your story straight eric
>>
>>749020031
It deserved less and Im a tendie, I literally play almost exclusively Nintendo games
>>
>>749020031
Very beginning was slow but it's a 10. It needs a remake, MM, WW too.

The fact that it's still controversial indicates that it was obviously too low

Fatty just hated Nintendo and probably still does
>>
>>749020031
Yeah, TP has some really good dungeons (and one or two awful ones), but the padding in between them is unreal.
>>
>>749020460
>downhill trend then that was only broken by BotW
The Zelda series post-2000 will continue to be an increasingly bizarre autopsy of the decaying social power games played by Nintendo over the direction of the Zelda series and neither BotW nor TotK did anything to change that.
>>749022415
Copypasted filler in an empty field isn't content and "quit when you get bored" isn't freedom of choice.

8.8 for Twilight Princess was the correct score. Gaming journalism is unprofessional and reviewers are afraid of giving Nintendo games lower than expected scores.

There are ZERO chances of a blunder like this one happening to a Nintendo game for example.
>>
The fact that it has the best dungeons out of the 3d games makes it at least worth a 9.
>>
>>749020626
Literally has 100x the content, variety and fun of OoT.
>>
>>749023887
>controversial
It's not controversial at all. The controversy has always been less about the score itself (which was a very reasonable take) and more about the fat guy daring to give a mainline Zelda such a "low" score. Case in point:
>Fatty just hated Nintendo and probably still does
>>
>>749020031
No. Thats WAAAY too high of a score for this shit.
>>
>>749020031
No. It was worth about a 2/10 and thatbis being generous.
It's not worth playing. It would do damage to you to play it.
It's a terrible excuse for a game and doesn't even use the wiimote as a pointer to look.
>>
>>749020031
TP is a 6/10 game, such a boring Zelda
>>
No Zelda is better than a 8.8. The main thing with Zelda games is that most people operate on binary thinking - if game is good, then it's 10/10, if not, then it's 0/10 - and because Zelda is designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, it produces millions of persons thinking that every Zelda is a 10/10 because "good" is 10/10. But the very crowd-pleasing nature is that makes each Zelda into a not 10/10. You can't have a real masterpiece by appealing to everyone. Zelda's just family-friendly GTA.
>>
>>749020031
No Zelda game even deserves a score of 8.0 or higher.
>>
>>749020031
Yeah it's great but not quite a 9/10.
>>
>>749020031
8.8 is the ultimate shoeshine racism reviewers have.
>>
>>749020460
don't forget to carry your 200 weapons that will break after 3 hits and spam that flurry rush. but that's player freedom o algo
>>
8.8 is a safe rating for this game. It's derivative, but also highly polished.
>>
>>749020626
BOTW sucked, compared to what it could have been, but it was far better than TP and had way more interesting stuff to do. TP is a failure of imagination.
>>
>>749029029
>if game is good, then it's 10/10,
No, people give the best Zeldas 10/10 scores because they genuinely are superlative and far beyond what the rest of the industry are capable of.
>>
>>749020031
>great art
>best combat in the series
>best dungeons in the series
>best girl in the series
Yeah its a solid 8. I still can't believe TP was the last time we would get a good Zelda game and that shit was fucking decades ago. Idk if FF or Zelda has the worst ongoing series of bad games in a franchise.

GTA is absolute garbage compared to the magnificence of Zelda.

If you fail to appreciate just how imaginative and well constructed games like OoT and MM are than that's a fault on your part, and you are projecting that only people like myself who play and enjoy a wide variety of games, but recognize the extent to which they all fall short of Zelda.

Jeff Gerstmann also gave OoT Gamespot's first ever 10/10 perfect and he literally had to fight his bosses over it
>>
>>749033861
OoT really is the game that's most worth of the first perfect score. In practice it has enough flaws to know a few points off from 100 proper, but 97-98 is a perfectly appropriate point for it to be marked at.

His review was shit and he was rightly attacked. All he needed to do was explain how derivative, unoriginal, tedious and restrictive TP was and he would have been perfectly justified.

He didn't and instead implied that Zelda was just inherently stale.
>>
>>749032882
As much as I love Zelda, it's a series that gets by on polish and accessibility over depth and nuance. Most games that would challenge Zelda simply don't have the commercial approachability and name recognition of the series, but there are definitely action adventures and dungeon crawlers out there that push harder than Zelda, knowing full well it won't sell 10% of what an entry in that series does. As far as action adventures go, Zelda won the PR war and has the flash it needs to maintain that position. A critical darling, if you will.
>>
skyward sword is more memorable even if it too isn't a very good game. At least it has better dungeons and bosses.

nothing will ever top oot / mm / ww though.
>>
>>749037376
>ww
I can understand glazing OoT/MM/Oracles but WW doesn't get to sit at the table. That game's almost rushed beyond salvation.
>>
>>749020031
No, it's a 7/10 game. Really a 6 but Midna is enough to give it an extra point
>>
>>749037708
sure, but it has something special to it that the other early 3d zeldas have and it has flaws sure but it is still a very memorable and great game.

twilight princess isn't that bad, it just... I don't know it just isn't a memorable game at all to me. The dungeons aren't very memorable, the game is very much from the brown era and doesn't hold up well aesthetically. It's just I've never had an urge to re-play it like I have with other zelda games and honestly I don't think I ever have.

I have a wii and gamecube copy of it and I've played them both 20 years ago and maybe I've tried playing the gamecube version once since them about a decade ago and never made it that far before I dropped it. meanwhile I've probably played oot / ww / mm / even skyward sword a few times each in that same timespan.
>>
>>749038054
To each their own. TP is a game I've cleared more than MM and almost as many times as OoT. WW is a game I've beaten twice, and both playthroughs were 15 years apart and left the same off taste in my mouth.
>>
Playing it for the first time. Absolutely soulless in comparison to Windwaker.

I'd dial it a little lower. Tears of light and the other less fun bits, often one-note weapons, and the story losing all momentum halfway through after all of that early investment aren't nothing.
>>
>>749038601
I don't know, every time I try TP again I just find something else to do quickly because the start of the game even the forest temple is such a slog to get through.

The intro sequence in TP really hampers the enjoyment of the game or getting into it in general. It was fine the first time I ever played it because I was so hype for this game before it came out, now not so much. There's too many other games I could be playing to go through that again.
>>
>>749037170
>Most games that would challenge Zelda
Please, what the fuck even are these games? Like every attempt at any claim that something is remotely like Zelda, let alone surpasses it, always results in something much more basic than Zelda, but just has some gimmick like a few complex block pushing puzzles.

Zelda has peaked so much harder than any other series though the average is dragged down quite a bit by the weaker ones and pushed gaming in general forward so much that I absolutely need you to back your shit up.
>>
>>749038905
Intro never bothered me in TP. I've always loved the rustic charm of that game so its aesthetic really draws me in and keeps me going through its slower parts, to say nothing of reaching its charming dungeons. With WW, I do like sailing and its art direction but not much else about actually playing it. The dungeons and sidequests consistently let me down, not just the intro (though I do hate that first Forsaken Fortress visit) but the entire game.

Deserved even less, every character was a malformed la creatura tier abomination and was only carried by Midna's ass. Boring music, boring temples, boring weapons except the chain and ball that was waaay underutilized
6/10 at best it's no masterpiece

Its so fucking over for nintendo dawg
>>
>>749038940
King's Field, Brandish, Xanadu Next, Astlibra Revision, stuff like that. Games that have zero chance of matching Zelda's presentation and polish, but in foregoing the jack-of-all-trades game design of Zelda is able to hunker down on an idea and actually flesh it out. Zelda generally does everything decently, but rarely pushes its ideas beyond. Occasionally you get a game like Majora's Mask or Oracle of Ages that steps up the raw gameplay a notch, but most Zeldas are content to stick with a very safe, moderate level of challenge.

I felt like it needed to flesh out the resistance a little bit more. I don’t need backstory for every single character but TP already took its time with the rest of the game, so a short quest where the vigilantes share a little dialogue would go a long way in my eyes. It’s still a great game tho
>>
Zelda has been rolling downhill for like 20 years. I don't even know what the franchise is anymore. It's practically unrecognizable from its roots. Most of these games are extremely generic low-budget RPGs carried by the franchise name. Under any other name, they wouldn't even be a blip on the radar.
