I would have more respect for speedrunning if the popular categories were all glitchless, but as it is right now speedrunning is just using bullshit to skip the whole game. They don't engage with the gameplay and master the mechanics, they just skip shit. Rubbing your face against a wall until you trigger the 0.01% chance glitch that teleports you to the end credits doesn't make you good at the actual game and should never count as beating the game.
>>
>>749022639
That reminds me of those esoteric GTA speedruns where the runner had to do all those random things to be teleported to final mission
>>

I personally prefer to watch something more interesting than "playing the game but fast". Glitched runs have that surprise element and teach you more about the game.
What I don't see is why are there so many people that sperg over glitched runs.

Name a single game where the most popular category is glitchelss and no skips.

Not true at all. At best you'll find categories that ban huge skips or annoying/inconsistent skips. Find me a Ratchet and Clank category where they don't abuse stupid movement glitches all the time. Find a Zelda OoT category that doesn't do any glitches or skips.
Speedtranners for some reason hate playing games as they were intended.

You press buttons against a tree for hours a day, months at a time without any realistic pause, millions of times to get through the tree saving 0.000000000000001% of a picosecond. You're infinitely worse than the most negative stereotypes of a basic, entry level gamestester that supposedly "walks into a wall 8 hrs per day". At least those are getting paid and don't kys when they see a father laughing with the mother and their kid on the street. God forbid they are the White :)
>>
>>749022639
I'm going to be a pedantic faggot but I also agree. Old speedrun rulesets usually banned glitches, but the problem is how do you define a glitch? Original FF7 had a bug where the magic defense stat just does nothing at all. Is that a glitch, and does that mean there's no such thing as a glitchless FF7 run? The answer is this question is retarded and not worth asking. Instead of demanding no glitches, which is impossible, speedrunners have categories that ban certain known glitches and exploits. Unfortunately, speedrunning is full of trannies who love abusing every exploit possible, so games rarely have categories that ban game-breaking glitches and give you gameplay that looks anything like someone just playing the game. Most speedruns just aren't interesting to watch, especially when it's just some faggot rerolling over and over for the one game-breaking exploit
>>
>>749032656
I'm impartial to the "no major glitches" rulesets some games have. This bans the retarded "skip 90% of the game to beat it in 5 minutes" tricks and just narrows it down to stuff that might save a few seconds that isn't that difficult to pull off but looks cooler and more interesting than just beating it normally.

You see this ran at GDQ a lot because it's far more interesting than both glitchless and any% runs.
>>
>>749023040
>glitchless category
Wrong, what you mean is there are categories called "glitchless" that might ban very specific exploits like a credits warp or arbitrary code execution. These categories are still full of glitches and appeal to the lowest common denominator of troons who won't speedrun a category that doesn't let them break the game in half. This is an obvious reference to how troons can't ever be honest about anything fyi

I kown it is not speedruns per se, but the fact that those who want to get a high score in Megabonk go for the relatively easy first level instead of the second one disturbs me greatly.
Playing on the second level would prevent their extreme min-maxxing as they would need upgrades right from the start instead of delaying them for snowballing purposes.
I feel that someone who respects the game would try his best on a level that can fight back but highscorers clearly don't.

No. Not that it's a bad thing but it's like already popular enough. There are dedicated people who push boundaries on pretty much every notable game and we got enough content about that. Making it any more popular than this would really just bring in more tourists and normalfags who tend to ruin things.

What I'd like to see more is more games that encompass speedrunning as gameplay mechanic. I had a lot of fun beating my/my friends times and getting ranks in Neon White, Trackmania and Ultrakill. Would love to see more games do this with charts, leaderboards and such.

100% pure distilled bullshit.
Speedrunners hate glitchless because it takes much longer to do a run, so they can't grind a good run as efficiently as doing glitches.
Spectators mostly watch glitched any% runs because that's what Dong Gone Quick and speedrun.com highlight the most by far.
Retards like >>749038948 also think that doing glitches is more """skillful""" than actually learning the game and doing proper routing, ignoring the fact that fucking glitches are pretty much a different game that has nothing to do with the gameplay design that the developers created.

To me, glitching to avoid gameplay sections that would otherwise allow high levels of skill epxression is the problem.
I doubt anyone cares if someone glitches to skip a grind or to skip pointless traversal where you would normally just hold forward, but if you skip a boss or a difficult level for instance, that's when it crosses the line, because you are avoiding a mechanically rich part of the game instead of mastering it.
Of course the issue here is that the judgment has a lot of subjectivity to it and it's hard to make perfectly consistent calls on what's acceptable to skip, but I tend to agree that modern speedrunning tends to go a bit too far into skipping mechanically rich sections.
Anyway, that's my two cents. Thanks for attending my TED talk.

Watch a fallout 4 speedrun for something truly nonsensical.
>>
The topic of glitches reminds me of Simpsons Hit and Run speedrunning, where 90% of the run is doing the machines as efficiently as possible while the last 3 missions are all about boundary breaking. Those last three missions aren't the low point either because getting that boundary break is still hard as balls to actually pull off and can still end in a dud run.
Speedruns that skip 99% of the game suck, speedruns that use a glitch to break parts of the game for a smoother experience are fine.

Speedruns are inherently flawed. Speedtranners want their runs to generate attention, but few people are interested in watching a speedrun that skips all story, dialogue, cutscenes, and usually skips gameplay segments too, all for a silly goal of "beating the game faster". I'd rather watch a longplay video made with savestates to showcase full game with expert level of execution. But most longplayers are fucking morons that can't do things right. They miss optional content and waste time navigating the game suboptimally.

The only glitches that are bad are the ones that trivialize the game (such as the equipment stacking glitch in Phantasy Star Online), completely skip the game (Gohma warp in Ocarina of Time), or make the game miserable to play or watch (going out of bounds in basically any game)
The real great sin in speedrunning occurs when a game's community decides not to seperate easy mode from other difficulties, and doesn’t label the runs as being done on easy mode

Just watch beat em up or shmup 1 credit clears, it's far more entertaining than a glitched or glitchless speedrun ever could, plus the stakes are actually intuitive, like when a guy dies in a 1cc you immediately know he's fucked and not confused whether that's part of the strategy or not.
