I need /v/ to form my opinion on this game for me. I remember enjoying it and what I specifically remember is
>driving is boring to an extent but is really engaging. the high performance vehicles probably could have been made a bit faster/tighter desu
>gameplay loop is kind of bland and removed a lot of fun goofy shit previous games had
>world isn't as diverse as previous entries but feels really immersive due to large pedestrian/vehicle counts but also struggles with feeling empty due to lack of useful side activities that aren't let's go bowling xD
>story is a bit meh but most of the characters are pretty good/funni
>>
You loved it!
Congratulations!

Yeah, I never got the hype for the DLCs either. They didn't really do anything new and the sort of retconning of weapons and vehicles in those two games despite them taking place in the same timeline and those weapons/cars never appearing in the base game always bothered me.

>>
>>749029662

I don't hate V but IV and San Andreas are undeniably better.
>>
The story to me is just bland. Idk. Niko bounces from criminal syndicate to criminal syndicate working for them for a bit doing stupid grunt work until it's time to kill them. It concludes with killing Darko who wasn't even in Liberty City and had to be flown in as some ass-pull and then the story just kinda ends. By the end game he's burned literally every connection he made through illegal work and so what's left? Running drugs around the city for the Jamaican guy? He killed off everyone else and everyone left would have to be stupid to work with him because he ends up killing all his bosses...
>>
>>749028919
>driving is boring
You can call it unrealistic, floaty, bumpy, arcady whatever you want. However, for better or worse driving in this game is never boring.
Look, you're saying you remember it, that means you haven't played it in a while. Do yourself a favor and reinstall it with Fusion Fix. It fixes a lot of stuff and it even includes DXVK by default now

Grand Theft Auto IV is timeless. It feels like a game that could have been released last year.

Story is GREAT up until you start working for the mobsters, by the time the third island is unlocked you're mostly doing missions for shitty mobster character ripoffs and all of them suck. The story gets put on ice because you're waiting for The U.L. Paper Contact guy to find Darko.

>Dan houser 100% was watching too much of the sopranos
He watched it so much to the point they even hired actors from the Sopranos, most of the characters from the Pegorino family were Sopranos actors.
Angie Pegorino, Jimmy's wife, is voiced by Rosalie Aprile's actress, Jimmy's bodyguard "Anthony Corrado" (Tony's and Junior's first name) is voiced by Eugene Pontecorvo's actor and Jimmy himself is voiced by a smaller actor from the show, hell, Ray Bulgarin was the fucking Russian interior decorator from the Pine Barrens episode

^I wonder if those frametimes seem to have a somewhat wide min/max compared to something external like manggohud because the in game limiter is prioritizing the lowest latency as opposed to perfectly consistent frametimes

>>749028919
>gameplay loop
all the gtas barely even have a gameplay loop. The loop is go to next "minigame" mission and simultaneously watch a movie part, then optionally take a break to dick around in a sim sandbox, which might have more minigame "activities". ALL the gta's are shit for that. IV lets you dick around the best of them all though, just because RAGE physics were new and unrestricted. V barely even used it.
>>
>>749039376
749039376
It's just how MangoHud works because it's an external limiter. It doesn't actually know what's going on inside the game; it just limits when frames are presented. It's incredibly consistent, but it is technically adding some input latency.

And again the whole game is just bouncing around stereotypes of New York crime. Now Niko works for the Russian mod, now the Italian mob, now some Irish gangsters, now some hood niggas, now the Italian mob again. Why would all these guys want to work with a dude who always ends up needing to find a new boss because he killed his old one...?

Probably the only GTA whete the Auto part felt engaging enough to be fun. The PS2 trilogy was fine too, and it was good enough because your cars weren't made of Vibranium. If you took on too much heat, you had to swap. Most cars would handle about the same. There were some variances but not enough to make a huge difference. IV's handling took it into an interesting but controversial turn. I'm on the side that enjoyed it because it added a lot of variety to chases. You could end up with total clunker options when swapping from your desired car that you wrecked and had to adjust to its quirks on the fly. The cars were more durable but thanks to the changes of handling, the physics engine and the new damage systems affecting the car's performance, it still made for some unique experiences. Especially if you took thinks into consideration like letting Niko buckle up to prevent a deadly crash.
V was just the worst of all worlds though. Almost everything handled the same except for Super Cars, which were just faster, your car was nearly indestructible with the post PS3/360 ports removing vehicle crumple, and you didn't have to worry about your car flipping over because it was basically glued to the ground unless you got into a bad jump or hard crash. Even if you got flipped, the car would auto flip back into place so you rarely had to engage with car swaps. You just stuck to your favorite car the entire time.
>>
>>749042317
I don't have IV installed rn so I can't say, but maybe the in game VSync option is broken somehow.
>>
>>749036724
Use the Console Gamma option in the Display settings, it restores the Xbox 360 and PS3 gamma curves that made the game look less washed out. You can choose one of them

>>
>>749042317
There was a time I was obsessed with trying to get perfectly even frame times in this game because I love it too much and want to play in the best way possible, but I could never get it to work flawlessly. Although it was with older versions of Fusion Fix and DXVK, so maybe it's better now

Here is something you can look into for perfect frame timing. It's also very useful for many other games. It's basically a way to have the Vsync on without the usual input lag it creates. You set a value in Riva Tuner, usually 59.97 or 59.98 and enable another form of VSync. Slightly lower values will give you less input lag, but higher (closer to 60) will be better for frame times. Try both in game setting for VSync and Nvidia Control Panel. Useful setting I remember is "Low Latency-1" in the panel but there is a way to do this in the DXVK .ini file as well.

Now with my results it would be almost perfect. But I could never get rid of occasional stutter this game just has. When you're roaming around the map I guess the shit would load and drop a singular frame which is not a big deal, but it breaks the frame pacing. I believe it's just an issue with the asset loading logic
I have no idea if having a Free Sync monitor would help with this at all since I don't have one, but it could possibly make some difference in smoothness.
>>
>>749034570
His house looked like shit though.

I don't think most people remember how free GTAIV missions were. Playing V for so long messed with my memories and for some reason I thought IV was just as restrictive with its mission design as V.

>>749043884

>>
>>749044259
Yeah IV was the last GTA with a lot freedom in the mission approach, but I have to admit they were quite repetitive.
GTA V's missions on the other hand had at least a bit of variety but were super cinematic and scripted, which meant that you mustn't go off the script at all times or the the director would call 'CUT!' (mission fail) and you had to do the scene again (retry)
>>

>>
>>749044579
Still, I am sure there is a way to try this out on Linux. The premise is the same, you just use your Afterburner equivalent to limit the frame rate.
Were you able to get a complete stutter free experience with your settings? I think it's more of an issue with the asset loading rather than anything DXVK and other fixes can do.

It's product of it's era. Games tried to be serious so this one had to be, games tried to be realistic so this had to be, games tried to be tell a story, so this had to. The main problem it came out after it's biggest hit of San Andreas which was a ghetto nigger arcade game so people got a whiplash when the next game wanted to tell a story of a serbian war cirminal hunting down his fellow comrades over revenge telling you how revenge is bad violence is bad, enjoy you time with your family while you can while being a sandbox where you can blow up civilians and hit them with your car to laugh at the uncanny ass ragdoll mechanics and being fucking molested by your fucking cousin to force you to play with the boring ass bowling minigame. >>749028919
We have a similar opinion. The way I describe it is: Gta IV is full of at first - but then's
>At first the driving was impressive, the physics are great, experimenting with the cars is fun but then you get to the end of the game, find the best car in the game and it still handles like a boat.
>At first the facial and character animations are impressive with top tier voice acting but then the story goes on way too long and becomes monotonous. Personally I tuned out around the time I was doing missions for Brucie, that guy was straight obnoxious.
>At first the gunplay is impressive compared to the other games in the series, but then the jank sets in and you're struggling with the cover system that feels both too sticky and too loose at the same time.
>At first the character customization is awesome, being able to create multiple outfitts for Nico, but then you find out the style is restrictive and there's no way you can't make him look like a FOB dork (not counting suits) then you start to wonder why you can't customize body sliders like in San Andreas
>At first the side activities are impressive, doing bowling, darts, dating, comedy clubs, movies and drinking are all introduced in quick succession but then you find out that's all there is, they're repititive and it becomes a tedious chore to do every time Roman calls Nico
>At first the helicopters are impressive, they handle realistically but then you start to wonder where all the planes from San Andreas are
>At first the enterable buildings are impressive, but then you find out there's only a handful of them and they serve to make the world feel smaller rather than larger. The strip club and burger joints are cool at first but then once the initial impression wears off it leaves you wanting more and feeling empty.
It's a game that has very strong first impressions but falls apart the longer you play it. I'd wager that if you only played halfway through the game you'd have a much higher opinion of it.

>>world isn't as diverse as previous entries but feels really immersive due to large pedestrian/vehicle counts
Liberty City is by far the most diverse place in GTA, perhaps tied with San Andreas
>>
>>749048870
Not op, but it's less diverse in terms of geography and color pallete. Just off the top of my head, San Andreas has the wilderness, the redneck area, the main city, the rural city, the ghetto and the beach areas which are all visually distinct, whereas in GTA 4 each area is just another grey urban landscape.
