And if so, which one is the best. I've been eyeing this series for a while and wanted to give them at least one playthrough, but I wanted to hear /v/'s opinion first.
Also, mods required or is vanilla good enough?

only san francisco is good

they unfortunately don't. the mission design just isn't good. it's the worst kind of dry, tedium. the opening tutorial in driver 1 is the most fun mission in either game.

that's the 2 psx games only of course.

Only if you REALLY like driving, and really like muscle cars.

Driver 1/2 are still great imo, very focussed in their design, but they're definitely old.

There's an amazing PC port of Driver 2, you can even check out the demo in your browser. Not sure what the best way to even play Driver 1 would be today. Maybe emulating the PS1 version. PC port was always a bit borked.

Driver San Francisco was a bit of a different beast entirely for the series but an equally fantastic game, hard to get your hands on these days as it's delisted everywhere.

Driver 3/Parrelel Lines and 76 are just second rate GTA clones. Nothing special at all.

This is probably also worth mentioning as well.

The Driver Syndicate Fan Game, complete custom engine, developed by the same people as the Driver 2 PC port, it obviously doesn't have the production values/story/fmv's of the official games, but if you want raw Driver gameplay it's as good as it gets.

Hope you enjoy it. It was a really great last hurrah for the series. They managed to retain the essence of what made Driver great, a good story, a really fun automotive sandbox and kept the focus on open world driving without falling into the trap of just making a GTA clone.

Genuine shame it's not for sale anywhere, hopefully the pirated version still includes the content they locked behind ubisofts uplay bullshit.

If the pirated version doesn't have the Uplay shit unlocked, here's a mod that should unlock it for you.

That final mission took me days to beat. I also vowed to never do it again.

Insane effort on the PS1. Easy as fuck with the PC port that runs buttery smooth kek
