It's not as good as everyone says it is.
>>
it's uncslop
>>
He really does just walk around with a probe in ass all day?
>>
it was amazing for its time but now it's just fine as far as shooters go. still pretty fun
HL2 on the other hand aged like complete shit
>>
the most 7/10 game to ever exist. the sequel is an 8/10
>>
unreal is better in every imaginable way
>>
It's not for everyone too
>>
uh oh, alf its at it again...
>>
I’d rather just play Quake or Duke 3D again.
>>
>>749040753
I don't think it aged as well as other 90s shooters, all the story stuff is super annoying too
>>
>>749040890
I agree with you and I think HL2 innovated very little, ah, gravity gun, cool. I'm done with it.
>>
>>749040753
Nobody is saying that half-soi is good though.
>>
>>749040890
because HL2's gameplay revolves around the gravity gun
rest of the weapon sandbox genuinely sucks ass and physics isn't the amazing novelty it was is the 00's
>>
>>749040753
All Half Life games are incredibly overrated, even HL2 Episode 2 which people kept saying was the best thing ever. I haven't played Alyx so idk about that one.
>>
>>749041115
HL2 Episode 1 is better than 2
all of the driving missions in HL2 suck and episode 2's finale is DOGSHIT genuinely the worst level in the series

It's so good that I emulated the PS2 version on Series X just to play with my gfoid who can't into mouse and keyboard.
>>
There was this interview with Gaben where he said that despite all the pressure for HL3 they didn't want to release anything because they couldn't come up with anything that would advance gaming. I don't know if it's cope but I think he was sincere.

Honestly yeah I think I actually Episode 1 a bit more when I first played it
>>
>>749041115
There isn't a single single-player FPS with a better paced campaign than HL2 and its episodes.
>>
>>749040890
The shooting is what I have a problem with.
Everything feels like you're just tickling people to death even with headshots, and headcrabs take 3+ shots with a shotgun unless you're pressing it against their face, but then they do 1/10th of your health in damage every time they jump.
And the Grunts you fight for 90% of the game are bullet sponges that shred you in seconds, because your armor is made of wet tissue paper.
It's just Doom or Quake but bad.
The atmosphere and story are great, but God it feels horrible to play.

>>
>>749041409
Yeah it's fun for like the first time and then on replays its a complete slog
>>
I really don't remember shit about the lore. I remember liking the priest in HL2 but I didn't care about the story itself.

I beat Plutonia on Ultra Violence, the shooting really is just that stinky.
>>
>>749040753
I enjoyed it when I played it as a kid and liked it more than Half Life 2 but it probably hasn't aged that well now

Its like every level is THAT level.
>>
>>749041423
How the fuck are you taking multiple shots with the shotgun to kill a headcrab? I don't really think you understand how much this invalidates your opinion.

no shit, your first time will always be the best on these types of games
>>
>>749041663
I stand five feet away from the headcrab and shoot it with my shotgun, half the pellets hit the floor, 2 hit the crab.
Repeat 2 more times, maybe more because I'm on Hard.
Repeat for every crab.

Kinda based that he's not even trying to hide honestly.

First part is ludokino, but when HECU gets introduced - i literally run and avoid as much as i can. Fighting humans just not fun - too bullet spongy and of course hitscans hit like a motherfucker.

True
>>
>>749040890
I had more fun with HL2 than 1
>>
>>749041703
Yeah but HL1 didn't have this problem as strongly for me, although to be fair I guess this was just an unavoidable consequence of HL2 being more story heavy.

>>
>>749041827
HL1 wasn't as mechanics heavy as HL2. HL2 is constantly training you up on some mechanic, developing it, then testing you on it.
HL1 is fun on repeat plays simply because of the movement.

I played both half-lives when I was already an adult, early 10s
I liked hl1 significantly more than 2, and actually struggled with finishing the episodes for 2. Even blue shift was more fun than 2

This chopped unc has a lot to thank that game for.
>>
>>749041851
I think it was pretty good
>>
>>749041726
You're retarded and bad. The zombies also only required two shots at a longer range, gonna go 3 tap a combine soldier with the pistol next.
>>
>>749041963
blue shift is a good little mini campaign
I would have been pissed if I paid full price for it on release but in a vacuum there's nothing really bad about it beyond no power weapons I guess
>>
>>749040753
Okay
You'll never enjoy a game as much as people enjoyed HL back then.
>>
>>749042060
That's Half Life 2 not 1.
>>
>>749040753
It's kinda boring honestly but I'm a fan of neither endless facility corridors or shooters in general so it's just not for me

Everyone sucking HL2's dick over stupid gimmick shit soured me on valve for like a decade. Didn't help that Steam was dogshit back then.

>HL2 is constantly training you up on some mechanic, developing it, then testing you on it.
I noticed that the last time I played it. It would introduce a new mechanic then have you use it in three sections each time. It got a little repetitive that way though and overall didn't really feel like the game blended everything together as well, even if the mechanics were enjoyable.

I actually liked Xen while the ending sections of HL2 have never really been enjoyable to me. Also, OP is probably one of the people who just regularly seethe about HL1 across multiple boards.

Man, I don't need it to "advance gaming", I just want a good game that concludes the story in a satisfactory manner. No need for the world's most advanced graphics either, if it looks on par with Black Mesa that's just perfect.
