Samus is discharged from the military for refusing to follow orders which would have gotten people killed. She becomes a bounty hunter.
In a random mission she discovers chozo markings indicating the presence of the legendary artifact. Surprise, surprise, the space marines are also there for some reason. The are attacked by nothing else than fucking metroids, and have to cooperate to survive.

Fucking Ridley attacks. Most space marines are dead by this point, and those alive can't keep up with the tech Samus has been able to harness. Samus must face a choice:
-Kill Ridley
-Save the marines
-Save the metroid
-Save herself
Before she can do anything, the metroid embeds itself into her suit and allows her to survive the exploding planet, killing ridley on her way out and taking the last space marine to her ship. Unfortunately, he dies, and the last metroid is now unviable except for trace DNA sequences.
