PvP games are by far the most popular games. Is a PvP MMO the future? Tell me about your design theories.
>>
>MS Classic gets shilled here for months with each thread have 100+ replies
>check the /vg/ general
>dead as fuck
What went wrong?
>>
>>749047627
virtually every MMO has PvP
>>
>>749047627
PvP in MMOs have always existed but it's not going to be the future, it's actually going to be the opposite. The usual suspects view PvP as a toxic environment so they will do anything to neuter it to deter competitive gamers from playing it.
>>
>>749047846
And in every MMO the PvP mode is one of the least popular modes, only ahead of unincentivized mini games

Hell, is there any popular aspect of any MMO that isn't incentivized to hell and back?
>>
>>749047627
PvP has become less and less important to MMOs over time
>>
>>749047846
Not every MMO that has PvP is a PvP MMO. There have to be some stakes.

>>749047971
I disagree. Fortnite is so much more popular than most games, it's unreal. It got a 14M concurrent and a 44M unique daily. Then you have APEX, MOBAs, BF, COD, Halo, Gears, CS2, Rust, ARK, and Minecraft MP. People are going to want a competitive landscape, and an MMO provides lasting playability and social identity like no other. It's peak motivation ... fun solved.

>>749048517
I don't think you have the numbers for that.
>>
>>749048952
Fortnite is hardly competitive, there's only one winner in every match so you're simply resigned to losing. Fortnite's popular specifically because the stakes are so low, along with being overall very accessible and games being easy to mindlessly play through.
>>

Maybe on No Build, but Build is one of the most skillful gamemodes in the genre.

One winner makes it more competitive, not less. The reward for winning is much greater.
>>
>>749050520
What I mean is that most people don't actually compete because they expect to lose
>>
>>749047627
generals belong on /vg/
>>
>>749050982
One thread a day is not a general. Hope this helps!!
>>
>>749050597
I don't think not trying surpasses trying. I don't ever not try just because the success chance is limited. People love life.
>>
>>749051491
Yes, and people love not stressing about nonsense. If there's little chance of gaining anything, they simply won't stress out about it. Only desperate or foolish people gamble.
>>
>>749051705
>People don't get immersed, one of the best experiences, because the competition is high.
They put everything they can muster into every shot. Just like sports, people put in everything they have, even if they're supposed to lose or have such a large deficit they can't come back.
>>
>>749052467
Anything below D1 college is just people showing up. Maybe nationally televized little league, but in your average local pop warner, beer league, bowling tourney, whatever, nobody cares, they just wanna play. Same with competitive vidya, especially the one vs all variety.
>>
>>749052818
Did you not play sports? You don't give up just because you're really behind. You play the game.
>>
>>749053740
Do you? For most people it's a glorified game of catch

What are you going to do, vibe code an MMO?
>>
>>749054296
>Not giving all your ideas to /v/ in hopes of getting a game made.

All the popular pvp games are typically lobby, skilks-based matchmaking, anti-smurfing, often equalized gear/ items at the beginning of a match, and nothing like mmos. I guess you can go ahead and be the next retard who tries to create a pvp-centric mmo that gets put on life support or shut down in the first few years. Have fun finding financial backing.
>>
is it even worth getting into wow? im so overwhelmed by all the versions. vanilla, TBC, mop classic, wow midnight, wow forever

like what do you even fucking play is any of it even good?? seriously is ANY of this stuff fun? how do you keep up with all of it
>>
>>749047627
PVP in MMOs doesn’t work outside of it being either some casual minigame or a niche tryhard gamemode that most of the playerbase will not engage with. Any MMO that focuses on PVP being the primary focus will remain incredibly small.

Literally Albion Online but you refuse to give it a try because of the camera angle or something.

"Some anons are saying PvP is niche and a PvP MMO won't garner players and high income. I think PvP is the trend. As far as I'm aware, PvP games are by far the most popular games. It's FOMO. You can always play a singleplayer game, but if you're playing with real players, you'll always feel as if you're in the middle of something. What do you think? Would a PvP MMO be popular and lucrative? Even if players aren't always starting on even ground?"

Does it not have a WotLK server? I want to make a DK when they're super powerful.

What I would probably do is play Retail because of the short leveling time and play BGs and arenas to learn the game competitively, still hitting some dungeons and M+ to experience the endgame.

>Research on MMOs also finds that community participation and social relationships are important to retention, while a 2025 systematic review found positive associations between MMO involvement, collective play, and social capital.
>You can have gathering, crafting, trading, PvE, territory, logistics, exploration, piracy, mercenary work, etc. -- but real people make all of those systems unpredictable.

>Reaching a maxed-out "700/700" specialization (maximum Item Power bonuses) for a single weapon or armor tree in Albion Online takes roughly 75 to 100 hours of active, optimized fame farming.
