Bard was always lame and gay. Now that lame gays have become so common amongst the D&D playerbase, it's no surprise that Bard surged in popularity.

Being boring is a core part of white culture. Whites define themselves as boring in comparison to other races
>A-Asians might be smarter than us, but we're stronger and manlier!!!
>B-blacks might be stronger and manlier than us, but we're smarter!!!
Whites see being boring and unremarkable as a point of pride, which is why they take pride in being an unremarkable white human warrior
>>
>>749051696
They can do pretty much anything.
>>
>>749051232
The rolplaying constraints of paladin aren't that big of a deal, most people like being good guys anyways, and the benefits of being a charisma class largely outweigh any of the paladin constraints. You can do more playing a Paladin than you can as a Druid, Ranger, or Monk.
And indeed. Look where all those classes are.
Note the hard drop after Wizard when you get into the MAD non-charisma classes.

The real mystery is Bard not being higher.

>>
>>749051696
Yeah. It's a pretty fleshed out class these days. I think the idea of bard being a support gimp has tainted it though, even though that really is no longer the case. But Cleric, who has a similar stigma, being the least played would reinforce this hypothesis. People don't want to play support in their own story, and even the perception of support is enough to sour it

Because humans are better than any fantasy race ever.
They are the most versatile and are not cast into a mold like other races. Their depth is infinite and they can do whatever they want.
As a human, I know humans the best and what they're capable of. If you pick an Orc, you'll always be just that, an orc and whatever pre-determined lore their race and culture include.
Human however, can be whatever, and that's what it's all about in a fantasy RPG.

>>
>>749052907
Despite its dated graphics and its primitive mechanics, the Geneforge series is more compelling and more open ended and branching than BG3. There is also the best of the Ultima series. And that's just listing off some of the true unc games

By far the worst d&d class I've played is a basic thief, you literally have to play a sniper or else the class just feels like horseshit

Those games aren't multiplayer and look bad. One thing BG3 does well is everything in its power to make you forget it's a top-down game, because RPGs are not top-down. TES is just janky simulators, they're not fun outside of seeing the game fall apart.

True, which is why it sucks because elves these days don't have any regality, nobility or finesse, they are just quirkchunguses like tieflings and act like teenage girls even if they're 50-200+ years old.
Ironically TES High Elves are the closest thing to a proper elf we have in a modern videogame, and even they are ruined by a retarded conquest mindset

>Why are you so lame
Hey, it's not my fault that Larian decided to give humans double carry load capacity +1 skillpoint in a skill of your choice. Also prof with light armor, shields and glaives/spears(does not matter for fighters but matters for other classes that don't use armors/shields). Also unlike other RPGs fighters in BG3 have a lot more to do, even if you go with the worst path that is Champion. You still get the bonus skills that are specific to the type of the weapon you carry and also all the actions like pushing, throwing, using item/enemy as improvised weapons. And if you make a magic knight or a battlemaster you get bonus skills/spells tied to those ontop of everything else. Playing a human fighter is way more interesting and way more involved in BG3 compared to pretty much every other D&D computer RPG out there.
>>
>>749053110
The pace of the game is slow. The controls are handicapped by the chaining system. There is a sluggishness in the control and navigation of the UI and its elements.
It is not a bad game, it is good - DESPITE all of its horrendous flaws - but it ain't the best rpg even in the past 20 years.
As much as I loathe Owlcat and their retarded niggergames, the Pathfinder games controls better and have much better pace.
Now, if Larian would let themselves be inspired by the good things owlcat did (fluid in-out-on-demand shift between turnbased and rtwp with a single keypress; simple, effective and precise control of one or all characters; easy management and positioning for tactical purposes) ...or they really don't need to look to owlcat, they just have to ditch the chaining system and revert to the drag-selection style that has always worked.

>>749054709
she did invent the demon killing magic her and Fern use I'm pretty sure, Frieren just likes collecting magic so even though she likely could invent some of the more useless spells she has accumulated over the years, it's the pursuit of the past magic that informs her hyperfocus on collecting tomes. Like practically she doesn't really need to invent much more than what Fern already uses, shields and blasts seem more than good enough for most things combat wise, so all other magic is usually just silly little things.

nta but the immersive sim-isms and problem solving sandbox is quite robust compared to the older BGs and pathfinders where you basically have a flat map and you do combat on for the most part. I know the later Ultimas did this first, but that kind of system driven stuff fell by the wayside for awhile after. Environmental design is also very good, lots of terrain to take advantage of, both enemy and player wise. first time I did the underdark boat fight I lost because the dwarf just pushed my entire party into the water.

one pro for the race that really can't be contested is that in the BG1/2 ruleset only humans could dual class, other races got multiclassing which worked differently. Never played this game before, is it a good or bad idea to do a first playthrough as Durge?

Seems funny to me, but idk if it ruins anything or spoils the experience for a first timer.
>>
>>749049461
I mean, I didn't do that personally, but you get 3 party members, plus the guys in your camp, so it's not that weird to make a "boring" "self-insert" main character and fill your party out with different classes.

don't know why they even bother with origin characters when the vast majority of their players are using custom avatars

imagine all that time and money wasted on origins spent on the custom options/special dialogue, or make act 3 better, or make Karlach's ending better, literally anything besides playing as origin characters
>>
>>749057124
naw you're good Durge is basically the actual main character, the custom character without the dark urge origin is basically a nothing character. I think they just made Durge not the default because people reacted negatively to the dark urge manifesting in EA against people's wishes.
>>
>>749057124
It would spoil your first playthrough if you DIDN'T play the Dark Urge. It's a custom character that actually feels involved in the story. It's way better than Tav.
>>
>>749057437
Yeah I didn't even know that idiot character existed when I played it the first time. I'm playing through it again now as the dark urge.
I don't see too much different, except some "uuuh you're having homicidal whims and fancies" and get to kill and harm people in ways you otherwise couldn't in conversation or cutscenes..which is neat. Makes it worth playing through a second time. Otherwise I wouldn't have
>>
>>749057124
dark urge adds a lot to the story. he is deeply involved in the backstory and it makes all the plot threads juicier when he's present. like any origin character, you're also going to get a lot of dialogue options, story bits, interacts etc. that are unique to him and not available with a generic tav. he is fully customizable like a generic tav as well, you don't have to be a dwagonkin sorcrer. he is very much the intended avatar character story-wise, but i think larian didn't want to force everyone to play such a violent edgelord, which is fair enough.

there are a quite a few dark urge-exclusive choices that can cock up your life a little bit, but it's very obvious when this would happen (your urge telling you to kill Very Definitely Important Character Whose Death Will Have Hugely Negative Ramifications) and you can usually get around it.

you are a black man
>>
>>749057437
Man the EA play testers were really a bunch of the most sensitive bitches on earth. I'm fine with the gameplay adjustments but when Larian does their next EA which I assume they will I really hope they ignore player input on characters and story.

Medium armor and shields, martial weapons, extra attack, and fighting style makes them a full fledged front liner PERIOD. And that's before self buffs and Booming Blade.
>full caster but worse
They have heals, revives, buffs, crowd control, debuffs, and disabling spells. Take Lore and they can throw out fireballs and chain lightning just fine too. They are full fledged casters on par with wizard and cleric.
>literally all half-and-half builds are terrible
Paladin is god tier. Sorcadin is god tier. Hexblade is god tier. And wouldn't you know, Bard is god tier too.

Bard is insanely good, probably the best class in BG3. it does it all, and it does it all well. it's a skill monkey, frontliner, caster and archer all in one. I actually dislike how strong it is because I feel like I'm throwing honor mode by not playing one
>>
>>749057827
NTA, bards are mechanically very good but I wouldn't make one my MC. I just want to say I find CRPGs a lot more fun when each member of a party is good at a specific niche thing and no Charisma based class. I hate "[Persuasion] Obviously Best possible outcome" game design and like how when you drop them from the group you're forced to actually pick sides and deal with risk vs reward consequences unless you put in the work to physically find alternative solutions.

Fighter/ClericBut not one of the busted subclasses/Wizard/Rogue is top tier.

Bards are the ultimate support class. They have loads of spells for buffs, debuffs, area denial, map control, etc. You make your team mates overpowered, disable or manipulate enemies, build walls or smoke clouds or other environmental traps. In top of that you have high charisma with a lot of fun dialogue options, and good dex and buffs for lock picking, pickpocketing etc.

I played as bard having never played BG or D&D before and had a shit load of fun, really feels like the perfect class for being the leader of your party.

The idea of a level 1, adult elf is simply preposterous in most settings.
You're telling me, that in the some 200 years it takes you to reach maturity, you NEVER did a single thing that would have contributed to a level?
An adult elf, even if we assume they only achieved comparable human consciousness at like 80, has literally an entire human lifetime of education, experience, and reflection.

Dwarves, actually do get decently portrayed. Dwarves are rocking maybe 50 years over a human, and indeed, every single dwarf almost always being talented at dwarf shit (mining, forging, brewing, ect) paints a believable image that this guy really is older than he looks

I hope they ditch the idea of playing as origin characters unless it's a background you can customize like the Dark Urge. It must have been a huge waste of resources to record unique lines for playing as every character when the vast majority of players would rather hang out and interact with those characters as their own character.

>>749049461
Humans evolved in a society where 90% of people had to be the boring slave surf so there's your answer
>>
>>749063310
The point of your character is being the exception. The world is mostly full of commoners, even elves, who have never gone beyond their home villages or even cities.
Besides that, elves have the luxury of having time so they don't need to rush. They can practice, weave baskets, have sex with a gazillion people and practice again in ten years.
>>
>>749064565
This seems to be hinged on the idea that CRPGs are played with a focus on a customizable blankslate MC being used as a vessel for world interactions and around which the rest of the party has to orbit around but I don't get why they don't adopt the JRPG thing where the party is just a thing that moves together as a unit and interacts with dialogue and stuff as a unit. Keep the Origins but just make it so you essentially play all the origins at the same time.

Because being a warrior of light and justice and rescuing princesses and killing dragons is not exactly boring or an everyday occurrence for anyone, and most people don't like doing things that go against their personality. Also, playing the way the devs intended guarantees that you'll experience the most content. A retarded question, honestly.

Sorcerer has innate magic that manifests as a restricted list of a few spells they can further augment with Sorcerer abilities. Wizards can learn as many spells as they have gold and time to learn and put in their wizard book, creating a massive list of choices of which they can select a few, but they will only have a small number of subclass abilities that augment casting a particular school of magic.

In a CRPG the drawback of a Sorcerer often becomes less apparent because the Spell list and situations is often more limited to start with and the player will have potential foreknowledge of exactly what they'll be dealing with which makes picking obviously good spells easy and enhancing the obvious best spells more valuable compared to a Wizard turbo utility.

To me on table top a Wizard almost always feel better but in CRPGs Sorcerers tend to be more meta.

I got no beef with that, the real issue I have is that like, you basically want a bunch of 4 stats which can be tough to deal with. you want DEX and WIS for AC, CON for HP and STR for tavern brawler damage on your punches. STR is at least easily potioned up but I can never be satisfied with a stat distribution every time I try playing it.
>>
>>749049461
My issue is:
>I just wanna play my class
>I don't wanna play the whole party.
As in: I'm fine with controlling them, telling them what to attack and whatnot, but I'm not a D&D fag. So I already have my hands full just choosing what talents and items to pic on my sorcerer. Now you're giving me 10 other classes and going: "Oh btw, manage the skills, gear and inventory for these fags, too. You can click auto level if you're fine with them skilling some absolute nonsense tho" FUUUCK. What does a barbarian wield? Probably a 2h?? How about the fighter? uuhh, also a 2h? Sword and Shield? Why the fuck do my fighter and my barbarian turn everything into mince meat with double attacks and extra moves and whatnot, and the Rogue is mostly only good for picking locks and pockets. The other melee classes do more damage looking in an enemies general direction than the rogue does.
Also:
>Dude, just multi-class
FUCK OFF. If I want to play a sorcerer I want to play a sorcerer, I want to play a sorcerer. I don't want to be a sorcerer warlock. And I want my Rogue to be a rogue. I don't want to ask "Hey how do I make rogue work" and hear fucking "take 3 levels in rogue and then go Ranger". That 's not a fucking rogue then, is it? That's just a fucking ranger who dabbles in pickpocketing, for fucks sake. I'm sure every god tier OP build is some form of: "Take the absolute minimum of your class and then take the most OP, different class for the rest of it". But who enjoys playing like that?
>>
>>749070109
Somewhat mirroring this sentiment, I do wish more RPGs had adopted the Gambit/Tactics system of FF12 and Dragon Age Origins, so you could almost completely fully automate your party members' actions in combat. That would let you focus entirely on manually choosing your main character's tactics.

Tangentially, I've never been fond of "Classes" in the first place because most of these games are only giving you a party of 3-4 characters at once, which leads to big blind spots that make some classes suck ASS on their own. This is especially egregious in the D&D system when you put them into video games since there's so much more combat than what you'd actually get in tabletop. They have these utilitarian skill-focused classes that can't do shit elsewhere, so they become a drag on the team for the most common scenarios, and that makes multi-classing so valued.
If multi-classing is pretty much necessary for half the classes, why have classes in the first place? Just let characters pick and choose whatever skills feats spells abilities etc. if the classes aren't actually balanced to be involved in the majority of the campaign.

I think a bigger part of it is that Wyll is just... the least interesting starting character in the game by like a country mile. Shart, Frog, Karlach gale and Astarion all have much much more interesting stories and are much more compelling origin companions. Wyll is just kinda.. okay, whatever. yeah. The only less interesting characters are the non-origin companions, which I guess famously were very underbaked when the game came out. I think when people realized you can recruit Minthara she didn't even have dialogue for a bunch of situations. But I haven't kept up with patches to know if they changed anything in that regard, but I can't imagine they added a "make these fucks interesting" patch.

Gygax put a lot of things in because they were fun.
2nd edition D&D (which largely happened to further divide from earlier gygax D&D from at-the-time current TSR) tried to be "more serious medieval fantasy" D&D. Also concessions to avoid the Satanic Panic stuff that happened earlier (no using "Devil" or "Demon", they were now Tanar'i and Baatezu,)
>>
>>749072370
I mean I actually like classes. My whole point is that if I get THE classic class based system aka D&D. I want to actually *be* that class. If I'm a Barbarian and someone tells me it would be benefitial to take a few levels as a Bard for better perks I'm gonna fucking lose it.
Give me my class fantasy. And usually I like a classless system. "take what works, make your own class" but in D&D I feel like everything revolves around the class. Astarion IS a rogue. I'm not gonna fucking multiclass him as a fucking ranger. Astarions personality is not a ranger. Neither is Karlach a Paladin. or laezel a warlock.

The problem is some classes are just bad, and some classes rely on a DM to let you do shit.
Barbarian is JUST worse than Fighter after about level 7 or so. Definitely after Fighter gets their third swing, and Barb gets a bag of dicks.
Paladin has zero reason to be taken past the aura, Monk has no reason to exist, period. Rogue is dogshit because Larian stealth is dogshir. Ect
>>
>>749073876
nta but classes were designed purely with single class in mind. they just didn't cut off multiclassing because too many people would expect it (but it was technically an optional system in 5e for a DM to allow or disallow)
>>
>>749073876
>after Fighter gets their third swing, and Barb gets a bag of dicks.
Which is what I complained about with my Rogue. Rogue already doesn't feel quite as cool and strong as figher or barb, but the fact that both of those get to hit twice, and a rogue, who lore wise would be capable of quite fast attacks, doesn't get multiple attacks a round? Fuck me.
>>
>>749074063
rogue is more tricky/agile than a combat machine. They get to move crazy distances and slip in/out with cunning action, and a mega strike via sneak attack.
5e is probably my favorite iteration of rogue/thief in all the various editions of dnd.
>>
>>749074159
>They get to move crazy distances and slip in/out with cunning action
Since I'm a sorcerer main, this problem is solved by dual-casting leap before a fight on karlach and laezel, then starting the fight and dual casting haste on both.
It's absolutely fucking hilarious to imagine some ranger bandit on the other side of the map thinking he's gonna take potshots at me, only for Laezel to fucking jump right in his face from across the entire room and delete his existence. I feel like my Sorc is already stupidly powerful but the most damage he has done has been buffing these two.
Meanwhile astarion is also there. I don't know. Maybe I'm doing rogue wrong. Maybe I don't get it. It just doesn't feel good to have 3 party members who turn every room into a giant blender. and one class who's like... just doing his best.

rogue is dogshit in terms of combat power in 5e, even in the cucked version of 5e that bg3 uses

Wyll suffered the most with the changes from how he was in early access.
Like the Wyll of EA sounds way more interesting, a ego-centric fake hero who's racist against goblins.

Preach. It's like how /v/ doesn't understand wheelchair-bound characters in RPGs
>uh, but the wheelchair wouldn't work in a dungeon
>uh, but you'd be pretty immobile in combat
>uh, but you'd have a bunch of other problems
it's like, yeah. that's the fun of it.
