The gloomy caves and dim-lit lights greet you upon entering, while the dripping of water and soft shanties begins to play. A true representation of the dark side of a pirate's glory. Unlike the other levels, the fear presented in this level is more figurative than literal, as you move through the caves, and eventually make your way to one of the ends, you are hit with a horrifying and dreadful realization.
>It's a water level
Back in the old days, water levels were the bane of ever gamer's existence, for they are often sluggish and difficult to navigate, like trying to wade through 4 feet of snow. Ironically enough, Donkey Kong Country had some of the best water levels of all time, unfortunately, they weren't able to replicate the experience in 3D, resulting in a slow and irritating level. That's not say there aren't any legit dark moments. The part where you have to navigate the sunken pirate ship was pretty dark in it's own right, and also contains continuity from the Country series, and there's that section where you have to activate the lighthouse, bring in both a ship, and a major storm that blacks out the sky. Not much else to say, only that dead Monkes tell no tale.

I really like the atmosphere in this level. Just hearing the audio from the playthrough you linked to is giving me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Even though this OP is a meme I do kind of miss the seedier side of the Mario setting that Rare and the Wario games explored.
