Do you uncs miss it, I know physical media is about to be gone, but everyone talks about renting games every weekend during the 1990s/2000s. what was it like?
If you're old enough to post on 4chan you're old enough to remember it
Damn I miss rental stores. But for me, it was Hollywood video. Insane the amount of games we "forgot" to return
>>749060003It was fine. I don't really miss it.
>>749060003I only rarely completed games that got rented. Parents wouldnt let me play them long enough
>>749060231Someone who just turned 18 would have been born in 2008 and wouldn't start forming their first detailed permanent memories until at least 2012 or 2013, at which point they would be 4 or 5 years old and probably not all that interested in console games since that's around the time parents started giving their kids tablets. Rental places were technically still around at the time, but they were already dinosaurs and the rental culture of the 80s and 90s was long dead. Blockbuster first filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and they had been struggling for years before then because fewer and fewer people were renting movies and games, so it's absolutely within reason for someone who's old enough to post here not to be familiar with the rental culture experience.
>What was it likeNext time you get a new game, play it for two days and then uninstall it.
>>749060003It was a nice activity to involve the family in on Friday night. You'd all get into the car, drive to Blockbuster (Or Hollywood Video), and then everyone would pick out a movie or a game. You'd all watch the movie together on Friday or Saturday night, then return it on Sunday, play the games for a week, return it. Then you'd pray to god they'd have the game again the following Friday, since copies were limited, and some people rented the same game every single week. One of the things that saved me from becoming a tranime weirdo in my youth was the fact that one or two autists kept renting out Final Fantasy 7 every single time I went there, so it was never in stock. The other game they had was Final Fantasy 9, which I rented, thought was absolute dogshit, and never played another JRPG ever again. True story.
>>749060785Jokes on you, I already have to do that if I want to actually finish a game.
I have fond memories of it, but I don't want it back either. I love being able to just digitally download literally anything. Buying is easy, pirating is easy. Renting was fun as a kid some, but I would hate paying for that shit now.
>>749060003>what was it like?didn't like it, especially games, having to return them wasn't fun as a kid.
>>749060003I actually have fonder memories of renting games from Gamefly in the early 2010s than I do Blockbuster in the 90s. I went through the entire Phoenix Wright trilogy, Professor Laytons, Xenosaga 3 and a bunch of other stuff for very little money.
>>749060003The mom and pop video stores I enjoyed going to haven't been around since the late 90's, so it's whatever. It isn't like it would feel the same anymore even if they were around.
>>749060354Hollywood Video was honestly better than Blockbuster. I can't remember what it was whether it was their deals on movies and game rental combos or their return policy but they also had GameCrazy which was basically a FUCKING GAMESTOP inside your rental store. I still got vivid memories of seeing RE4 and the Nintendo DS for the first time in our local spot.Basically it was the most magical time to be a gaymer, and we still found ways to bitch about it lol.
>>749060003it was a magical timebefore niggers, feminists, faggots and trannies and all the assorted low trust society shit that they create. you could walk into the place, rent it, and everyone knew youd return it because you were white and high trust. youd have an amazing time with it over the weekend, usually with the rest of your family, and it turned into a real treat for the weekend.
>>749060785Honestly knowing you only had it for a set period of time made it even more appealing to play it. I remember renting the same game multiple times as well so we could beat it or just because it was that fun.>Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2>Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2000>Motherfuckin SMASH N64 if you had this game your house was the spot for friday sleepovers.
>>749060003I mean in general, everything becoming digital or not needing you to leave your home (the indians and immigrants can just drop off your sealed slop or groceries on doordash) is pretty degenerative society-wise. But I don't really care anymore we're heading toward a world where we can live in fiction and probably soon be able to create new interactions with old media as the AI stuff gets better
>>749062774>It isn't like it would feel the same anymore even if they were around.True, they'd be full of recent movies and I can't fucking stand modern hollywood slop. Anime section would be kino though.
>>749060003>Do you uncs miss itno. not a single day goes by that i think "man, i sure wish i could run to blockbuster to see if they have a game that i actually want that hasn't been rented by some other faggot who never brought it back"i started pirating ps1 games when i was about 11-12 years old and we never looked back. we would just borrow games from other kids, rip the cd and burn it on our own discs. did the same for ps2 with swap magic, then a real mod chip. ds flash cart when i got a ds lite. gateway when i got a 3ds then custom firmware. hacked wii with a giant external hard drive. emulation on pc. steam deck now loaded with ALL of that. and since n64 emulation was shit for so long, i got a flashcart for that too from china for 40 bucks. plays romhacks too on real hardware. THEN n64 emulation got good, so i don't bother anymore.i never ever want to go back to that shit.
>>749060003for me it's a bit later>be mid 20's>get off work fri evening>swing by smiths to grab something for dinner and something to drink>check out the redbox right there and pick out a ps3 game for the weekend>chill damn it was good times
>>749063289I never messed with these, I always heard of people returning the cases empty or doing other tricks to keep the disc so the next person renting it gets a case with cat turds in it.
>>749063289Me and my brother did Gamefly for a bit but by this time (around 2008? Just around a year after I started lurking 4chan) me and my friends would just scope out the nearby thriftstore Bookmans since it had an extensive vidya section. I'm talking I found fucking Killer 7 and most of the GCN Resi Evil games there. We'd go and just peruse the nerd section of comics, vinyls, and games after school. Shit was SO cash.
>>749060003You appreciated movies and games more because you only had a couple days to get your money's worth out of it. I would watch a movie to the end then rewind and just watch it again. It also helped that media wasn't as shitty as it is today.
>>749060003My favorite vidya rental at Blockbuster was either Sonic Heroes or Paper Mario TTYD.
>>749063289I never used a redbox. Thought that shit was lame.
>>749063404Never happened to me it must had been very rare. Either way you could just get your money back from the store that had the redbox in it.
It was great because it would be the cherry on top of an outing with my family. >go to the mall and spend a few hours there>go eat dinner at our favorite restaurant>go to the video store to explore possibilities and rent something There's, like, no reason to leave your house anymore.
>>749062126i get it man, i didn't finish most games because i usually had other stuff to do while i had the game, in addition to needing to play the game. this kind of got me into a habit of not finishing things in general. and since i preferred trying a new game every week instead of buying a game every 3 months or whatever the fuck my parents would have been okay with, i usually rented. even if it was an older 7-day rental game i generally didn't have enough time to beat it. the number of blockbuster games i actually finished between sega-ps2 is probably less than 15, out of away more than that, and the ones i finished were almost always fighting games like budokai or flying dragon.
>>749060003Yes I miss it. I don't fully know how to describe it, but back then the whole world felt way larger. You couldn't go online and find answers to your gaming questions in 3 seconds. There were hardly any guides. To play with your bros you had to go over to their houses and play split screen on the PS2. I miss that time in general, and it wasn't just because I was a kid and everything was new.
You now remember hastings
>>749060003>WE AREN'T RENTING A GAME, ANON
>>749060003Time moved slower and weekends felt more like an event. Vibes were completely different the only thing that mattered was your local area and what was going on. News from around the world was locked in a newspaper or nightly show you could ignore you weren't bombarded by stupid shit that doesn't matter 24/7. God take me back I hate the modern world.
>>749062126When I look back, it's interesting that I was pretty satisfied with games I'd rent. Afterwards they'd become games I'd want as a gift, and the excitement leading up to getting the game itself was always it's own kind of thrill. Also, with games you could hold onto them for like, 5-7 days IIRC? Way longer than a movie. That was *usually* enough time to finish the game unless it was some gigantic JRPG, but I rarely rented those in any case. Speaking of which, I LOVED demo discs. Fucking LOVED them. They were cheap as shit and I was somehow never unsatisfied with 15 minutes worth of content, probably because the variety of content was enough to keep me occupied for hours at a time. Didn't even conern myself with not being able to access content.
Pretty good, you were in for some surprises. Games actually existed as opposed to not existing at all now. Not everything was a brainwashing attempt by jews, asians, niggers, university, governments, religion, cops, trannies, faggots, midgets etc.
>>749060354I wonder how widespread this was. The only time I ever "forgot" to return a game and kept it was when I first got a 360 and rented CoD 4 and Halo 3. The guy at the counter said I was lucky to even get my hands on a copy of CoD 4 that weekend because it came out earlier 2 weeks before and people were renting them and not returning them when they were due or at all. I became one of those people
>>749060003If Blockbuster tried reopening, it would fail again for the same reason. “Woah, I’m not driving across town and waiting on line to pay $5* for something I’d have to bring back in a week! I’d rather press two buttons on my remote to bring the movie to me.” It’s the same reason people bitch about sequels and remakes but don’t support original movies in theaters. And now rentals would be $15 because of inflation.
>>749060354Hollywood Video was insanely based. The stores were usually bigger and they'd have way more variety than Blockbuster. Blockbuster was where you went for mainstream popular titles and Hollywood Video was where you went when you were looking for something more obscure.
39 year old boomer here, I really don't get the nostalgia for video stores or like 90% of the past. Our local video store and later Blockbuster stressed me the fuck out, I still sometimes have nightmares of forgetting to return a vidya and riding my bike real fast to Blockbuster in the middle of the night and the return slot is broken. Kind of like how some people have nightmares about missing class or forgetting to wear their clothes to school.I just don't get it. The quality of content is way worse but the means to provide it is way more convenient and less annoying, I think the video store nostalgia is a psyop by jeets who were eating shit and playing in mud during that time and feel left out or some shit.
>>749065336Fuck man, tomba was another level of kino
>>749065560You weren't middle class with a loving family that returned all the movies/games for you.
>>749065439There's literally no world in which it would thrive the way it did previously because it provided a service that has been rendered completely obsolete. The only way you could make it work is if you had a curated collection of things that couldn't be easily accessed any other way, and even then, you'd have to make bootleg copies of said thing to rent out since "renting" it to someone would basically guarantee it being stolen after a while.
>>749065560People just miss being 10 when the world was so much more novel, and their biggest problem was an upcoming math test.
>>749060003The attractive part is not the renting, but it harkens back to a time when you and your friends were still kids and can afford the time to get together every weekend to game. Back then not everyone owned a console, so we would agree to rent games and go to the friend that has the console to game
>>749065560Did they even let kids rent things back in the day? I thought you had to be 18 or something as a way to make sure only responsible individuals were the ones walking off with rentals?
>>749060003It was like going to a store. Do they have stores in your village?
>>749065687>mfw i'm 35 and that's still my biggest problemWould not recommend, btw. There is little else as strangely humiliating as being a career student.
>>749065734Pretty sure Blockbuster as a franchise was cucked on "children must be accompanied by adult" bullshit, but other chains like the one I went to had a waiver your parent could sign to let you rent anything but porn.
How much of a brainless NPC do you have to be to miss physical media
I don't really miss renting itself, but I miss the shared culture everyone tended to have before personalized services turned majority into shut-ins.
>2003>see pic related at Blockbuster every time I go there>8 year old me thinks it's the most gay-ass girl game ever just from the box art>always get something else instead>one day go over to friend's house>his older bro is hogging the TV so we just sit around and watch him while playing on our GBAs>he's playing Animal Crossing and showing off his town>pretend I'm not interested because AC is a "game for girls" despite me knowing fuck-all about it except seeing it at Blockbuster>the moment he showed off his in-game NES collection I can't even fake it anymore>mom picks me up later that day>beg to buy AC because I "needed" it>she loves me and I rarely ask for things so she complies>she even starts playing it herself despite never playing games before and pretties up the town while I'm at schoolI made the right call because who the fuck would rent AC of all games? No wonder it was always in stock there.
>>749064881You can still do the first 2
>>749065994based and wholesome-pilled
>>749060003>got to play dozens of games I normally wouldn't bother playing because it was $5 to have a copy long enough to finish them>anything worth playing longer you'd just buy because it was worth the moneyIt was alright, had it's ups and downs, couldn't rent PC games but everything else was a free for all.
>>749066010The malls are empty and even if they aren't you're a mega weirdo if you hang out in one post highschool.
>>749066010I have yet to find an activity for winding down after a meal that hits the spot as much as a rental crawl did. Also, the mall fucking sucks now. They gradually evicted every shop that made going there interesting.
>>749060003>what was it like?>there weren't constantly hundreds of games releasing every single day, so by virtue of relative "scarcity", vidya was already inherently move valuable>you couldn't just download thousands of dollars of vidya in an afternoon that you end up never playing>you decided on a game, and you had that game for the next week>if you couldn't decide on one because nothing looked good and/or you had already played all the games you actually wanted to play, you'd ask your dad to pick one and then you'd end up with a wildcard game that either sucked ass or was surprisingly good>you then spent the next week trying to beat the game before you had to take it back>most importantly - you actually played video games>you weren't inundated with so many games and such analysis paralysis that you end up playing none of themIt's a lot like the "reading a book" of video games, if you can even make such a comparison.
>>749066205My dad was 50/50 on picking out games. Still will never forget him insisting I buy Blazing Angels when I got my PS3. Trash game that made you use sixaxis.
>>749060003I think there were good parts and bad parts about it. The good part is the obvious stuff. You could get basically any game you wanted for a fraction of it's actual cost. Like a 24/7 Steam Sale that every publisher was in on. And of course, since you were there you could get all sorts of peripherals and sundries too. Rented a multiplayer game but didn't have a second controller? No problem, you can rent another controller too. And there's candy and sodas to rot your teeth along with your brain. It's also an easy sell to your parents. They can rent movies while they're there, dad gets to return his porno tapes under the guise that he's dropping off your game on Monday, and if they don't like that you're playing the game all the time it'll be gone soon anyway.Of course, the downsides are there too. The first one is that it's kind of a rip-off. Think about how long you've owned a video game you've had since childhood. Probably over a decade or two. Even if you paid like $100 for some super exclusive deluxe edition it's pennies per day now, if that. But $5 for a weekend with plenty of late fees is highway robbery. It also meant you couldn't really play longer games like Final Fantasy unless you rented it multiple weeks in a row, and at that point you might as well buy it. It also means you're never really building a collection. It's a small thing but it's nice to think back to a cool game you played a while back and just play it. If you rented it, well, maybe you can get it at the store. But sometimes they just didn't stock them, or all their discs went bad, or they went out of business because it's 2006 now and the industry died.
>>749060003yes i do, we didnt have smart phones either. so leaving our house meant leaving the internet.blockbuster and the card shop
>>749060003>rent the original super Nintendo version of harvest moon >someone playing the game had a wife and kid it was some pink haired bitch>go to the pub every night and spend his money talking to harlots >wife gets upset and divorces him>save game and return to the store Hope that faggot enjoyed his broken marriage Anyway as to the op, no I dont miss it. New releases were always hit or miss to rent because there were limited copies to rent. Sometimes you were stuck with old stock and rarer movies were hard to get too. Nowadays you can just instantly watch whatever you want and despite all the soul of the store being sucked out of the experience it is better now.
>>749062912It's late Sunday night, I just beat MGS4, and I have to get up for school in the morning... AND THESE CUTSCENES WON'T END!
>>749060003it was the best
I miss working there. It's hilarious how soul crushing an office job is compared to putting movies on a shelf and talking to people about movies and video games. My spending power was a lot more back then too even though I made way less.
>>749060003>what was it like?I used to have a friend that worked at one and we'd come borrow 3 movies every weekend and have everyone over to drink and watch them.when I was much younger I'd borrow n64 games and because no real internet in my life every single game would be some wild new thing I'd never heard of.I think streamlining things has made stuff in general worse, it was better when you had to deliberately go places and talk to people.kind like how MMO's now have party finders and grand exchanges, when you used to have to talk to people and trade in place and time things were better.that happened to society too.
God I miss being a kid/teenager with zero responsibilities other than homeworkI miss the early 2000's era of gaming so fucking much
>>749060003I miss living in a predominantly white neighborhood that had genuinely friendly people. Now everyone's a nigger, hispanic, or so burnt out from their 5th job or an eternally angry boomer/elder gen-x that there's no point in talking to them. or worse, I've started seeing indians
>>749066795every generation thinks things have crash and burned since they were a kid but I think with millennials it actually happened.the world really did go to shit with the proliferation of the internet, we had actual golden years when the net was too slow to spend all day on and you had to physically go places and do things. the 2000's was probably the last time things were actually good culturally and it's been decline for ~20 years now
I don't miss physical media or anything like that. I miss when the internet wasn't completely devoted to misinformation. The amount of lies and propaganda and marketing on every single popular page of the internet now is orders of magnitude worse than some dumbass shit like not having CD copies of your games to accidentally scratch.Genuinely, a few decades ago were better because the internet hadn't fucked everyone up yet. Nazi Germany had less propaganda.
>>749065203Ah yes, the Norman conquest of Britain. I remember it well.
>>749066962it was fun when the internet was largely for and by humans.you'd go to a website and it'd be "Johns Pokemon Red website" and it would just be john talking about Pokemon red
>>749066896This. Zoomers have no idea what they're missing out on.
>>749066907I had no idea we were in the golden era of gaming. Things I couldn't imagine have now become a reality. I know this has been said a million times before, but early/mid 2000's was the perfect balance of Tech/SocialI don't have the picture saved, but that picture that said 'the world you grew up is gone' is 100% accurate. I can't pin-point exactly where it went wrong because of all the shit that has happened since then.
>>749067042kek
>>749066896>anon used to think everyone was white until he started browsing 4chan many such cases
>>749066896This is 100% accurateThe town I grew up in was like 98% white, and ever since hurricane katrina happened, we had a massive influx of niggers, spics, and now indians.I hardly recognize the place anymore, which is why I never bother to visit it anymore ever since my parents moved out of it.Most people will never get to experience what it was like to have a quiet, friendly neighborhood with the worst crime being someone's house getting TP'd
BURY ME WITH MY MONEY
Reminder these threads aren't made by people who never lived either the 90s or 2000s. They're made by 35 year old faggots who are obsessed with pretending to be a little teenager going "um....what wuz gayming liek in the old dayz?" for which they will then circlejerk each other off and go memberberries mode. This is evident by the usage of the word "unc", because retards will fall for it easily.
>>749065336>JampackNow THAT was my shit. For some reason my family always had demo discs around. I remember having a Jampack with some obscure chef game. I can't remember if that's the same one that was offered thru Pizza Hut that came with FF8 and/or Spyro demos. We also had a 2001 Summer demo disc for the PS2 that had Ratchet and Clank. I think playing lots of demos growing up contributed to my habit of playing lots of different games but never finishing them.>That intro talking about the UNDERGROUND™ with all the COOLEST and SICKEST game and behind-the-scenes access. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHNfdWlbWm4It was this one.
>>749060003As is mentioned every time someone brings up nostalgia shit: People mostly don't miss specific things like Blockbuster, old McDonalds, or Vanilla WoW. These are just catalysts that remind you that when you were in them, you were young and worry free. Your biggest anxiety came from how the hell are you gonna convince your parents to buy you another expensive video game? The video store experience honestly mostly sucked ass. As did most things back then. There's a movie where a guy goes back in time to experience the "good old days" of like.. the 60s or whatever. Everything was cheap and food tasted so good!" And while yes, Inflation hadn't fucked all the prices up to be utterly unreasonable, people pointed out that you would be enjoying that key-lime pine in a thick cloud of cigarette smoke, and it would likely have been made by a man who thinks washing your hands is for pansies, unless you got literal shit on them. In many ways: the past sucked.
>>749067668>I remember having a Jampack with some obscure chef gameThe one I posted is probably the one you're thinking of, since it came with a japanese demo of pic related, which was genuinely crazy. I've never heard of any other demo ever doing that before. And what's more, the game is fucking awesome.
>>749067656Seems about right. I've seen at least 20 of these threads in the past month. Is it like, not possible to just create a nostalgia general? Why do they have to pretend to be 16 when making the thread?

>>749067309funnily enough I think it was 2012, probably at the same time as people were saying the world was gonna end.by ~2016 it was all over and we were in full downhill slide.
>>749060354For me, it was nigging through mid 90s to early 00s Walmarts and just shoving games down my pants, anything new, and trading it into Hollywood Video for the niche things I wanted. Yes I boosted 4 copies of Madden that my confused grandpa got for my birthday because he thought they were books and fenced them for a copy of Azure Dreams and money for Faygo.
As an internetless poorfag, I greatly appreciated that hollywood video treated anime the same as cartoons. They seemingly had no idea they had straight up porn in the aisle across from little kid's cartoons nore did they card them.
>>749065560>I dont get itBeing autistic does that
>>749067928It's not the same
Also, we live in a culture that's still reeling from multiple traumas and probably won't be able to recover from them because we're simultaneously more connected than ever before, but less connected than ever.
>>749067774sure but you cant deny the fact that social interaction is dying by every single metric.there's no 3rd place anymore, people dont invite people over for dinner, no one hangs out at bowling alleys or arcades with their friends.all of this shit actually and measurably did decline into a sadness and loneliness epidemic.

>>749067890Even if you're right (which you probably are), this entire fucking board is overrun with disingenous threads full of people who keep discussion alive by either genuinely having the stupidest opinions imaginable or by crafting them in order to bait further engagement. I was lucky to have a Hollywood Video and Blockbuster Video, and later on Family Video and some other local places in my town growing up.Renting enabled me to experience a lot more games than the average person my age at the time, unless they were pirate lords which was tough to do on the console more-so back in the day. I rented from NES to PS4 and started from the early 90s until Family Video closed down here and everywhere for good, which was probably around 4 or 5 years ago.I always went for the new releases, I made sure to get there on day one for new releases, right when they opened. I went through a lot of games in that 5 days or so they gave you. The time limit gave me an incentive to complete them, and now in the digital age of abundance and simple PC piracy along with no fucking exclusives anymore for consoles, I basically can experience anything I want with simple ease. But back then, it was an experience that I miss renting vidya. Nothing will ever replicate it again with the death of physical media now.
>>749060003The thing about having flashbacks to rental stores is that it's just not possible in the current gaming environment even if corps weren't trying to kill it. Console games just don't release. If they still existed and you went to game rental stores today, you'd go to the section of your favorite console and there'd be the same 5 games as there was last week, and the week before it, and the week before it, etc.So it's hard to say what I miss about rental stores when first I have to describe what it was like living in a time where console video games fucking existed.
>>749068013>2016I think that might be it, because that's when I really started to notice some negative trends
>>749068135I mean, capitalism, right? Who the fuck has time to gather a bunch of friends and hang at the bowling alley unless it's your birthday? You gotta work your job and then your second job. The guy who invented the mall wanted them to be modern town squares, where people could just hang out, and be a community, and instead capitalism turned them into machines that funnel you through as many stores as possible, with nothing to do other than buy buy buy. Places that were formerly designed for people to just hang out, remove seating, so that people are forced to go into a store to just fucking sit down for 5 minutes. Used to be a man can go to work, own a home from that money, support a wife and 1 1/2 children from that money, and have enough to go on vacation every year and have the car filled up. Now people where both man and wife work are lucky if they go on vacation once every 5 years. Capitalism is eating your fucking souls.A decent burger here that isn't just a sad bun with a tiny patty and nothing else, cost like 8 bucks plus here. Can you afford to just go somewhere, and buy something to eat all the time? I fucking can't.
THIS IS LITERALLY FASCISM

>>749060003Renting games in the 2000's sucked because all the discs were scratched.
>>749068621>
It was him
Way to ruin it
Did that cat just talk?
i hate itit reminds me that the world was nice once before
>>749060003I only rented games once and that must've been the autumn of 1998. You could rent a console plus two games so we rented a Playstation plus Crash Bandicoot and a racing game. After we got a Playstation for Christmas that year I never rented a game.
>>749068631This was never a problem during the SNES/NES era, fugggg.
>>749068631>rented pic related once >game disc was scratched to shit>would always freeze at this one loading screen about 40 minutes into the gameYou wouldn't believe how hard I tried to get this thing to work before giving up and taking it back. Now that I think about it, I think the same thing might've happened when I rented Wrath of Cortex. I had heard the loading times were long, but I think the game froze during one that lasted for like 5 hours before I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
>>749060003I can still smell it bros...
>>749068842Did your rental place not have a disc doctor? My Hollywood Video got one the moment they started becoming available.
>rent snes jrpg>have to return it before i could finish>rent it again months later>my save file is still there
>>749069124>Just sand the disk broPure snake oil lol
>>749069124I guess not or I would've gladly had them clean it instead of go back for a refund or w/e their policy was when it came to busted rentals. Either the people at the Blockbuster near my home didn't have one or it was before the technology was reliable enough/cheap enough to be made available at the stores.
>>749067921>hired out games...uh, hired?
>Go get a game>Put it in a console>It just works>If it's a flagship game that got a good spread in your local gaming magazine it was probably a great game >No need to trouble shoot, no missing drivers, no random crashes, don't have to hunt for the right peripheral, don't have to trawl through hundreds of shit steam games to find one that's goodBros... I think I miss console gaming...
>>749069283Is that all it does? Whatever it is, it 100% works in my experience. Back when I started trying to tackle my PS2 backlog, I had several discs that would lead to frozen loading screens early in the game. We have a nearby GAME OVER retro vidya store that does the disc "cleaning" for like $3 or something, and each one I've brought there has worked flawlessly afterwards. Think I oughtta get one of the machines myself if they're affordable. Breathes life into old games.
>>749069445Bongistani for rented
>>749069445Probably an ESL who uses google translate before posting many such cases
>>749069481I tried it because my copy of wild arms 2 had a scratch that prevented leaving the first act. Did it, popped it in, still didn't work. The guy who I paid didn't even offer a refund kek
>>749069773Your scratch might have been on the label side then.
>>749060003an annoying chore
>>749060003a single mistake could ruin your weekendeither rent the same game or risk having your weekend ruined by a bad game.renting an N64 game was like walking in a land mine because most games sucked outside of the well known ones
>>749069773Damn, that sucks. I don't think there are any guarantees, but the dude at my store was definitely willing to give a refund if it didn't work. They had a PS2 hooked up already nearby so I was able to verify that at the very least I was able to get past the part of the game where it'd freeze. That guy was cool, I wonder if he's still working there. Makes me feel bad for being a smartass and calling them out on selling demo discs with "NOT FOR RESALE" in bold print on them kek.
>>749060003As a kid it was really exciting and a way to play games without much money but frankly I can buy games now and also I have too many and also piracy, along with digital store fronts are very convenient now. If rental stores were common still I would literally never feel the need to walk into one anymore. But yea video games in general had a much more mysterious aura back then and going through random ones through rentals was very exciting.
>>749070083I played the battlefront demo on that disc for like 100+ hours
pingas
>>749060003it was kinda rough for SNES because re-renting sucked if you didnt get the same physical cartridge againfor PS1 though it was pretty sick because of memory cardsEither way it was good for dumb games that you'd only play for like 5-10 hours anywaysI remember renting pong for PS1 and I had a good time but would never want to play that game ever again. It was a perfect rental.
>>749070272>pingas
>>749060003>walking home from sledding in the snow>see family station wagon driving by>it's parents>they rented the playstation and ecco the dolphin from blockbuster>by the time I walk home it's hooked up and ready to play>this led to eventually buying the playstation instead of the sega saturnit was like that
>>749070413blockbuster let you rent consoles? I was around with this stuff but never knew that. Guess it was just something my parents didn't care about.
For me, it was mumberg taking me to blockbuster on the first day of school holidays and getting me the 7 weeklies for $7 deal and watching a different movie every night before making myself two coffees and attempting an all nighter on Runescape or WoW before inevitably failing around 4am
>>749070537Yeah, I rented the N64 when it came out.

>>749071215https://arch.b4k.dev/_/search/boards/v.meta/text/%22What%20was%20gaming%20like%22/type/op/Why is it hard for you to just create a 90s or 2000s nostalgia thread and state it as such? Why do you have to phrase it like a 16 year old queer popping the question every time? Why does asking that make people with neo-vaginas (like >>749068345 and >>749068210) so angry? I am just curious.
>>749060003I loved smelling the dick sweat of the day fuck on his way home from the gym grabbing a copy of shreck when I was cock and Balls height at age 10 and my mom would always tell me to eat shit when I asked for those big boxes of candy at the counter. Then she would get wine next door and take me home with a rented copy of megaman x1 for SNES.I miss her bros.

>>749071893>SOCOM 3I had a friend who was really into the PSP game. Never played them much myself. Those games always got raving reviews in this magazine, though after a while I decided that their reviews were definitely lazy bullshit.
>>749071676>crime downfunny how crime goes down when cops ignore crimes, the DA doesnt charge people, or the rampant crime is just ignored in statistics.do you think it's safer in 2026 than a suburban city in 1990?
>>749071661>.t
>>749071819It has, it's just that everyone and their mom having a portable broadcasting device makes retards living in safe suburbs who have fuck all experience regarding the shit they're talking about manage to read or see the dumb shit happening half the world away on whatever social media shit they're on and think that it's somehow worse.
>>749072034the fbi stats are wrong? interesting. surely you don't trust any of them then right?the 70s and 80s were very violent times. It would of course depend on the city but generally yea things are safer now at least in the states.
