Why is Ocarina of Time considered one of the best games?

What is the best way to play OoT in 2026?

What do you like about OoT? What do you dislike about it?

What advice would you give to someone interested in playing it?

I played it when I was 2
PC port
I like the idea of the game
I hate its overrated status
I would advise you to wait for the remake

3ds remake on pc in 4k
>>
Probably the remake at this point, otherwise just play the original or like the GC port

>Why is Ocarina of Time considered one of the best games?
Because it set the standard for controls that basically every action game has followed since,
>What is the best way to play OoT in 2026?
On the N64
>What do you like about OoT? What do you dislike about it?
The music.
The Fire Temple
>What advice would you give to someone interested in playing it?
Read what NPCs have to say. My nephews played when they were in elementary school and were confused because they refused to read anything.

Nostalgia.

>Why is Ocarina of Time considered one of the best games?
Its a good, straight forward adventure. No subversive bullshit. Revolutionary for its time.
>What is the best way to play OoT in 2026?
Recomp

I played it when I was young

The remake (both of them but the 3DS slightly less so)

I think the reason games from that time are so highly regarded is because it was the best devs working at their peak on something they were actually passionate about. AAA at the time assumed quality would equal profit. It didn't have the cheap tactics of profitability that modern games prioritize now.

Just because you hate AI doesnt mean the OOT recomp isnt a recomp.
>>
>>749066664
It’s actually pre AI, but it has way more glitches than any other version so it’s not a great recommendation.
>>
>>749066767
Recomps were called recomps before AI.
>>
>>749066137
it's quite a fun game blind, but gets boring on repeat runs because the fun is in figuring things out. I'd recommend the N64 original of course but for the sake of availability the PC port is fine too. 3DS port is also pretty ok, though it does flub some of the visuals like the final boss.

>>749066805
I know, the OOT recoup was well before the AI recoup scene started, it, Star Fox, and Mario 64 were like the first and last before all of those, they still have a ton of issues that likely won’t be solved due to scenes around recomps being retarded now focusing efame

Fedora's mask > Ocarina > Link between worlds > Oracle of Ages > Link to the past > Tears of the kingdom > The rest

I am wanting to play it on a Linux machine I have set up as a sort of home console in my living room. With that in mind, what would be the best emulation?
>>
>>749067090
beats me I'm still on windows. if the PC port isn't linux compatible I imagine Dolphin would be, in which case you can emulate the Gamecube port of OOT
>>
>>749066137
>What is the best way to play OoT in 2026?
The original on a real N64
>Next best
The original, on emulator, at 320x240p.

>Why is Ocarina of Time considered one of the best games?
Because it has a sincerity that most games do not, a great musicality, good game design and level design, and actually a profound narrative that's not often brought up as one of the best things about it.

As a child I felt there was a greater meaning to the game somehow, and as an adult I could better articulate why. It's about the relative sadness of the passage of time, and how your perception of your surroundings change as you grow up, but how there's still the same person inside of you for your whole life. In Miyamoto's words, "I believe that every adult has the heart of a child, but we just gradually convince ourselves to act more like grownups". and this is exemplified with the timeskip in the game, where the literal darkness that sweeps over the previously joyous Hyrule can be seen as the experience of growing up. You now see all of the things you didn't see before, IRL it would be the equivalent to growing up and thinking most things are possibly, but after growing up you see how there's systems in place all over the earth, like just money as one thing, that is kind of arbitrary but we all confine ourselves to, and suffer many injustices over, just to keep ourselves organized but then also accepting that power is everywhere, and it corrupts and it hurts people.

In OoT the sentiment feels similar, because the antagonist is simply an "evil dude corrupted by greed." And throughout the game there's NPCs saying phrases like "Simple minds turned to noble ambitions."

Ocarina of Time to me feels like a tone-poem about the relative sadness of letting a lot of the darknesses of maturity corrupt the innocence you used to have. So there's a melancholy there despite being a prototypical fantasy plot.

It's excellently paced and got a lot of things right on the first try. It also has a great soundtrack.
PC port but for me it's the modded 3DS version
Its pacing. I can go back to it any time and it never lulls like TP or WW do. I wish they did more with some things though, the Ice Arrows are genuinely useless which is a shame.
Literally just play it. It's not a hard game, if you find yourself getting stuck talk to NPCs, Saria, or Navi.

I still prefer MM but I'd be a fool not to recognise how good OOT is.
>>
>>749066137
I'm emulating the 3DS ver with a single screen mod because I liked the visuals for it the most. I'm only 2 temples down as adult link.
>>
>>749066664
There's no recomp of Ocarina of Time, you're confused.

I really like this post and it makes me excited to play the game

I don't know. Fucking play it, maybe?
>>
>>749066481
What's funny is that you're supposing this exact shit doesn't still happen in modern games.

I (30, male) just finished my first playthrough this week on my Switch 2 - I liked it.

>Why is Ocarina of Time considered one of the best games?
I think this commendation was stronger when it was released, but it should remain commended for its sincerely timeless gameplay and approach to story. The former for ways to engage with the environment, in the form of puzzles, that are in line with what a person would do in real life i.e. it's as engaging as a well-made escape room. The latter for its simple hero story that wouldn't be out-of-place in a adolescent's personal library, a point I think a lot of modern video game narratives miss. I would put the story on par with something like "Hatchet". Despite the simplicity, I appreciated the story's openness to interpretation - I do think the sages are dead and I found their willingness more poignant with my imagined situations of their sacrifices.

What is the best way to play OoT in 2026?
What I think is most-to-least favorable:
- Original hardware
- Emulator with original controller and no savestates
- Emulator with mapped inputs
- Emulator with mapped inputs and save states

>What do you like about OoT? What do you dislike about it?
I liked the points I mentioned in my first answer, as well as the music and the final boss battle. I did not like the jank and travel times required when redoing certain sections, though I put up with it because I wanted to appreciate the game with something close to the original experience. It's kind of like listening to live classical music, watching a film in black and white, or reading a book in its original language.

Don't feel bad about using guides to solve some puzzles. I referenced a guide three times during my playthrough, and each time I found myself thinking "I never would have thought of (or found) that". I think this game benefitted from a social aspect that's hard to find nowadays - schoolyard gossip on secrets and strategies in games. Strategy guides were a thing, too, but a game like Ocarina of Time was just asking to be the focus of urban legends. Super Mario 64, despite being very straightforward, had its own set of urban legends being shared among kids. I think this experience has also helped cement Ocarina of Time as a gaming touchstone - you just had to be there (I'm aware I wasn't).
