I really don't get visual novels. Just make them a movie, manga, book or something else. There's no game to be played here.

>>749151048This is only an opinion people have if they've never read a visual novel. Umineko is probably the best example of this.>>749151123I really need to play this.

>>749151048If someone makes their "story" a VN or a video game, it's usually not because they wanted to take advantage of what VNs and video games do better than other media. 99% of the time, it's because their slop can't stand up to even the lowest bar for quality of other media. There are occasional outliers, but those are just that: outliers. They are not to be taken as representatives of the "average".
>>749151048>i don't get novels. just make them novels
You used an adventure game as an example in the OP, not a visual novel.
>>749151240Give it a go anon. Back in the day it was quintessential /v/-core.It's definitely a slow burn, even by visual novel standards, but it has an extremely comfy atmosphere and aesthetic.

>>749151048Hotel Dusk is one of the best DS games to be made. It's a shame what happened to Cing afterwards.

>>749151718>QRD?They made a sequel to Hotel Dusk, but the company went bankrupt before it ever even released in America so it went largely unnoticed and sold terribly.
>>749151048>i really don't get novels with visuals
>>749151048I don't really think visual novels are games nor do I think they're anything great but the medium is functional. You can fit branching narratives into one, music and art changes how you engage them compared to a book so the writing practice is different, and a game with a good story and good gameplay both can easily suffer if they aren't working together while a visual novel only has to do the former and on a much lower budget.
I like visual novels, they have a certain language of storytelling that you don't get anywhere else. Less cinematic than a movie or a fully animated game, but more visual than a book. It's basically a book with well timed music, and just that alone makes it worthwhile.
>>749151934>while a visual novel only has to do the former and on a much lower budget. Then I'd expect VNs to be cheaper to reflect the lower budget. And yet they usually command higher prices than actual games despite being a fraction of the entertainment value.
>>749151795They tries to make another one for mobile under a different company name but iirc it was never released in the west and now the studio is dead.
>>749151048Hotel Dusk is not a visual novel. What's next, is Monkey Island a visual novel?

>>749151048It's just a cheap audiovisual medium that's relatively easy to make. It's easier to write than a book because you're basically just writing dialogues and monologues and it's easier to illustrate than a manga because you're only drawing single illustrations as opposed to complex paneling in manga which is an entire skill in and of itself. It's an accessible, entry-level medium for people looking to do creative work.
>>749156892No you don't, you're the only one who reposts it and you don't even try to hide the fact because you get off on being recognized as a nuisance.
>>749157037>you get off on being recognized as a nuisance~
>>749151048It's like a book with visuals, voice acting, music, sound effects, choices, sometimes it's a game, etc. There's a lot that makes it unique.
>>749151048>There's no game to be played here.Maybe because they usually are not games?Just like every form of art, VNs have their own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to presenting the ideas you want to tell. People also have their own prefences when it comes to experiencing art.

>>749151123I think Last Window is way better
>>749151412It's a visual novel through and through
>>749162084with two minutes of gameplay doe
You can't really compare a VN to a book or a movie, the format and writing style is completely different due to how they're presented. Pic related would read terribly in a book, but in the game it's combined with art and pacing that makes sense for it to be written this way.
>>749151048Theres decision making in visual novels where your choices matter to reach different endings. You cant do that in movies and manga.there were books who used to give you that experience ("Choose your own adventure") but those things are a thing of the past.
>>749151048don't make me post all the game overs you can get in hotel duskbtw FUCK dark auction

>>749165101Is Dark Auction really that bad?
>>749162040They're equally good, and whichever you play second is diminishing returns.Last Window is slightly more complex and slightly longer, but I also thought its pacing was way worse, and I much prefer most characters from the Hotel rather than the apartment.
>>749166323It's a generic mixture of Escape Room with Mystery Novel and it's full of AI Slop in the art-department. Oh, and it's about Hitler...

Ohohoho how about Dangaronpa? Does it belong in the VN genre peasant?

VNs are supposed to have branching paths like CYOA books.
