RDR2 is an attempt at a tragedy, which is all well and good considering the vein of the first story. We had an antihero coming to terms with the fact that there's no escaping his former evil life in a rapidly shrinking, centralized world, and we sympathized with him because he was trying to make things right even as his former sins brought hell on him. In RDR2 they retread this motif again (snooze) but the reasons were supposed to sympathize with our protagonist are heavy handed modern political motifs. He fights the evil capitalists, he respects women, he treats blacks equally, and he feels sad about those poor natives. The focus shifts from the problems the protagonist (John) caused himself to the problems laid upon our protagonist (Arthur) who woulda been a good boy who conforms to modern progressive moral ideals if only he hadn't been forced by circumstance to become a murderous scumbag.
